I really hope they're not taking the code from Maemo Mapper and using it...I mean you just don't know. That would suck. No maps for the US by the way.

I seriously doubt it for two reasons:


They've got an existing product already
Karoliina's blog, syndicated on planet.maemo.org (http://planet.maemo.org/) mentions it's vector, rather than bitmap based.


Even besides that, why would it suck if they used the Maemo Mapper source? It's under the GPL, anyone's free to try and sell a commercial version of it as long as they abide by the terms of the licence.

Ouch. According to Engadget.com, this thing is going to be almost $250. That includes the receiver, the software, and a car mount. That's how much I paid for my 770.

Worth it?

I'm thinking that buying a bluetooth GPS receiver for $50 to $60 and using Maemo Mapper would be much more fiscally responsible than spending $250 on this solution. I had high hopes for this thing, too.

Well engadget is just guesstimating the price. They arrived at the $250 figure by converting the euro 199 price from the press article. I would expect it to be around $199 price range for the kit which seems ok considering that you would get the bluetooth gps receiver + Navicore software + 1gig rs-mmc card and holder.

If its $250 it would be better to buy a standalone garmin receiver which is the same price range.

If the 770 itself is a useful indicator for price (as well as many other similar devices) then the €199 figure should indeed translate into something like $180-$185 over there.

well, the breakdown for it isn't too bad:
100 Euro for the GPS Unit
50 Euro for the car mount, car charger, 1GB RSMMC
50 Euro for the software

Too bad there aren't any N. American maps yet.

It looks nice, but until I can get street maps for SE Asia, it's of no use to me.
