Is the 32gb built in storage in this device is for downloading data from internet or transfering data also?Is it for storage only for songs, video and music?

You must be an iphone user :)

You can put pretty much whatever you want on there AFAIK, although some apps may not run from that space.

Why is that, actually?

Linux and every Unix I have used (IRIX, Solaris, BSD) have defined paths for apps such as /usr/bin and /opt. Edited due to correction. If so it should be easy to change that configuration once we have the phones.

No, (simply put) the /opt (application) partition is 2 GiB. The reason not to use the full 32 GiB for apps is to forbide Windows messing with them, when the device is connected using the USB cable.

So 2GB on the N900 for installing apps? That sounds almost too good to be true, after the rumors of 256MB...

@bemymonkey: Both is true, 256 MB for the root partion, 2GB for additional apps. Both should be plenty for all kinds of apps. I do not think that will ever be an issue to the normal to adanced user. And the ueber geeks just repartion the device anyways. How needs a Windows accessable partion. ;)

256 MB is plenty for boot. And 2GB is plenty for apps.

My Ubuntu 64bit server install has 158MB in /usr/bin while my 64bit desktop (laptop) install has 305M in /usr/bin .

I'd like a Windows accessible partition... the N900 was supposed to be my chance to learn a little Linux, but I wasn't planning on switching completely ;)

That's what the rest of the space is for.

Ah, so the only one I'll be able to see from a Windows PC is the "Data" partition for user files? Interesting...

Built in 32gb memory in the Nokia N900 should be enough for me to do anything from downloading third party apps or apps from the Ovi store and the Maemo Community apps .This device has a external memory slot to add a 16gb card to store music, song&video. This device has much more than a desktop computer.A desktop computer has 3 or 4 gbs of memory.Does anybody agree these statement?

Hi afrcblack58,

The memory you're referring to on desktops is RAM - the N900 has a lot less RAM than most desktops or laptops... the 32GB + 16GB SD card is all just storage, like a hard drive on a desktop... although IIRC the N900 uses some of it as Swap, which is sort of like RAM ;)

Built in 32gb memory...
...a 16gb card...
This device has much more than a desktop computer.

That's storage, the equivalent of hard disk drives on desktop computers. At this point, desktops commonly have hundreds, or even thousands, of gigabytes of storage.

A desktop computer has 3 or 4 gbs of memory.

That's RAM, commonly called "memory". The N900 has 256 MB of this, plus an additional 768 MB of virtual memory.

Virtual memory, also known as swap, is part of the 32 GB storage used to hold the overflow from the 256 MB of RAM. Applications can't be run from virtual memory, they need to be swapped back into the 256 MB first, and virtual memory is slower than real RAM, but at least it avoids "Out of Memory" errors.

In short, no, the N900 isn't besting modern desktops with its specs. However, it does well for a pocketable device, and it can match desktops of not too many years past.
