look at this review with the same compass interface pic and where the reviewer says

It does not have a digital compass. The GPS can sense your orientation as soon as you start moving (how much you have to move, that I don't know -- on my Garmin is like 30cm while on my N810 you have to go straight for nearly two meters before it gets the orientation right).

No, that button is a tool to rotate the map manually around. It is not a digital compass.

Well, actually it can sense the direction you are moving in, not the actual orientation of the device.
