Is it possible to change this? The Xperia X10 has all sorts of ideas floating in my mind for a gorgeous media player look.

If you're talking about the Nokia-supplied media player, then I believe it is themable to an extent, but for any big changes you might be out of luck, as it isn't open source. You might want to investigate trying to help out with some of the open source players.
