Perhaps I missed it in the new guide, but is there a way to open and call contacts without opening the keyboard? Can you access contacts and call in portrait mode with touch screen? I understand we can not text yet in portrait mode, but surely something as rock dead basic as this can be done in portrait, since this is how you would use it to make calls.
Please say "yes" and mean it. This would be one of those "obvious" things that will drive a lot of users nuts.
Update: You can NOT access contacts unless opening the KB- this is crazy. You have to start typing, so better than nothing but still a silly option compared to simply allowing contacts to be accessed in the same position you would make the call.
This device is starting to have shades of N-Gage in regards to basic funct.... Heck EVEN the N-Gage allowed contacts more directly. ;)

Holding the phone in portrait-mode automatically brings up the phone app (screenshot02.png). From there, you can 'Select Contact' to bring up the contact list or choose 'Dialpad' (which in the screenshot is behind the yellow message) to bring up the dialpad.
The phone app can also be brought up by pressing the power key and selecting 'Phone'.

So there's no quick favourites one touch dialing.
I'll have to think about this as its a facility I use very, very often.
Is there perhaps a recently dialed numbers list which is easily accessible?

Thanks!!!!!!!! It is not worded in a way that suggests this in the manual. Can you write us one? ;)
Rushmore can I persuade you to edit your original post (9) to indicate the correction, led me up the garden path for a while.
Snippet from the manual
"If you hold the device in the portrait orientation, you can use
the initial character icons on the right side of the display to
find your contact."

Every language is there, except mine (not only UG, but N900 itself doesn't have too). Come on Nokia..

I think a lot of this stuff will get improved by the end of the year. More phone centric options will make the device more appealing to people beyond techs and media nuts like me.
Now I just have to hope Dell sends me the N900 at least before the end of the year ;)

I'm not sure if it's one-click, but if you place your such contacts on a desktop it should be at most two clicks (when you are on the right desktop).

The date on the download page is just a date saying 'as of this date you can download this version of the manual'. The actual date of the PDF file (and the other language versions I checked - I didn't check all) are still from 2009-10-09 (a month old in other words).

Ok, I'd like you to discuss something with you. In the Italian version of the guide they say CLEARLY that there is a right arrow key AND a left arrow key. Did I miss something or they gave 4 arrow keys to Italian N900 too?

Comparing the new file with the old one side-by-side, they have corrected typos etc., so it's certainly a different file.

Strange, that. They must then have created the PDF files on a computer with a totally bogus clock.. (or copied them to a server with such a problem). These days a lot of stuff (e.g. browsing to sites with certificates) don't even work with an incorrect clock.

The HTTP datestamp doessn't necessarily reflect the datestamp of the file on disk, especially with database/CMS-driven websites.

I've moved the posts regarding the lack of Turkish support in Maemo 5 to their own thread, "Turkish not supported" (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=34342). Please continue discussion of that topic there. Thank you.

Bounce Evolution hasn't been pre-installed for some time now. It wasn't on the 300 pre-production devices given out at the Summit for instance, and if I recall correctly, some of the testers who received devices even prior to that said their units hadn't come with it installed.
It seems to be available (freely?) from Maemo Select (http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications/bounce-evolution/) though.

Yes, Bounce Evolution is a free download. It is a short game with limited replay value and more the feel of a small demo. I've heard some speculation that a full version will be available for purchase through Ovi Store eventually, but I've seen no official confirmation of that.

Incidentally, I installed it today.
What you say wrt. replay value and demo-ness is quite true, but I believe it could prove fun to have a bunch of people together and watch how they twist their arms in a knot to complete the levels :D
