Site logic - when clicking on threads in the active topics

When I click on "active topic" I sometimes end up in the middle of the thread. Why would that be? I would expect that my clicking would get me to the last post in the thread. Furthermore, once in the middle of the thread, how do you get to the last post without clicking through every other page at the top of the window. I do not see "last" until very few pages are left.

It auto posts you to the last post that you read in that thread I think. Last always seems to be there for me on the far right of the page numbers.

If you look at the actual links provided there, you'd see they add "newpost". What this means is that clicking on the thread name will take you to the first post within the thread that you haven't seen yet.
