you can reset the firmware with flasher.

edit: just use the search function, there are probably a lot of other threads that will guide you through the flashing process.

NSU will update only if there is a version newer than the one installed on the device.

Are you using XP? It may be simpler to just flash directly. Its simple and takes less than 5 minutes.

1. Download (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php) and install Flasher (maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2.exe).
2. Download (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php) the firmware file and Save to 'c:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5\'
3. Open the command prompt. Start + Run. Type cmd and press Enter.
4. Change directory to the flasher program.
cd "c:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5"
5. Connect USB cable while pressing 'u' key (details on the wiki (https://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware))
6. Run the command on windows is
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

Wow! Thank you!

At the end, what is the last version of FW?
42.11 is my fw, but 46.16 is only for developers?

AFAIK it doesent't works in vista or seven.

I flashed the device in xp mode under Seven x64 and it worked perfectly.

Are we stuck to the same update process for standard FW updates, or is that process more "automated" by just using the device?

Kind of lame the Flash process will not work with Vista or 7.

Full flashing from a computer is intended as a rescue mechanism. Normally, updates will be made available via Seamless Software Update (SSU) (http://wiki.maemo.org/Seamless_Software_Update).

Your N900 will notify you of an update when one becomes available, just as it does for application updates. You may initiate the update process immediately or, if you prefer, ignore it for the moment and wait until your phone is, say, fully charged and on a good WiFi connection.

The process is:
A blinking notification--the same as appears when application updates are available--appears in the status area of your N900.
Tapping the notification opens the Application Manager which automatically shows the available update. (Should you decide to hold off on installing the update for any reason--busy, low battery, on expensive data connection, etc.--you can close Application Manager. The SSU will remain waiting in the "Update" area of Application Manager until you're ready.)
Tap the update to begin the download and installation process.
Your N900 will prompt you to make a new backup of your data and settings just in case. Making a backup may be skipped, should you want to throw caution to the wind.
Your N900 will close all open applications.
Your N900 will download the update.
Your N900 will automatically install the update.
Your N900 may reboot.
Done.

can you post the steps?

AFAIK, in terms of Windows support, the case seems to be,
Supported: XP, XP64, 7 x64
Not-Supported: Vista, Vista Premium, 7 (x32)

If it works on 7 (x64), I reckon it should work on 7 (x32)

hey guys i have the biggest problem/ challenge.

my N900 won't turn on. it keeps saying "installing software update, please do not interrupt" and then to the nokia screen and restart. then goes all over again, and again.

i tried flashing it on with windows XP, but when i run: (Flasher-3.5 -f RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11_pr_combined_MRO_ARM.bin -f -r)

it Replies

FLasher-3.5: option requires an argument --r

i tried is several times

but wait thats not all.
after disconnecting the pone and reattach it it does not go to command mode. every time i connect the charger or pc cable it turns automatacly on and keeps updating and restarting

Did you do exactly like this, with the capitalized letters etc?
flasher-3.5 -F <FIASCO image> -f -R
so
flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11_pr_combined_MRO_ARM.bin -f -R

Sounds like you need to charge the battery externally (another compatible phone or a desktop battery charger).

everon3336
02-01-2010, 09:23 AM
But does any one knows an other way to go into flashing mode

Rob1n
02-01-2010, 09:26 AM
The only way to go into flashing mode is to hold down the 'u' key while the phone is off, then plug it into the USB port. If the phone is continually rebooting when plugged into the USB port (or when powered on), that usually (well, in every case I've seen) indicates that the battery is too low for it to even enter the recharge mode, so the battery needs to be charged externally first, before retrying.

Which version of XP do you have? I had the same issue with mine here (SP2 only - apparently SP3 is required), and ended up using a bootable Linux CD to flash it.

Hello

Thanks a lot for your blog.... your solution has been untill now the closest solution that I tried to fixed my nokia n900 that caught a virus the day before yesterday

I have flashed my n900 before without any trouble, but this time im going trought a really hard time, dont know why?

the cdm keeps telling me that the device us not recognized usb?

i tried like a mention your solution... Repeat every steps a few times already, but in still a little stuck

1.- so... i uninstalled the OVI, PC suit, Software Updater, un case they are making a conflict.
2.- Unistall the cable driver, and run again the cmd, in -i mode to see the conection come up...
3.- with the device manager open, saw a few things: Disk drives show: SD1 Device witch I think is the nokia n900 under flash mode (i think this is the problem)
4.- plug the n900 holding the u, windows new hardware appear, i ignore it as advised.
5.- installed the cable driver that i downloaded from your link, a notice came up from this procedure during install, i ignore it as well, and finished the instalation. all god untill now.
6.- ? Nokia n900 (update mode) appear under network adapter with the question mark... all good untill now. command still in waitting...
7.- i did bought, cancel in one ocacion the windows new hardware windown, and the other time when trought with the offer to find driver... bought times happed the same:
looks for NOKIA USB ROOM DRIVER, BUT DOESNT INSTALLLED IT ANYWHARE, but the 2 drivers that get installed are: Nokia BB5 ADL PARENT, AND LOADER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT....
8.- for a second the cdm recognizes the device!!!.. and this comes up:
usb devoces found at bus bus-0, device address \\.\libus0-0001--0x0421-0x0105
found device rx-51 hardware revision 2101
nolo version 1-4-14
version of 'sw-release': rx-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_002
Booting device into flash mode
suitable usb device not found

that is all......

JUST AS I WAS FINISHING!!!... damm..... close....

Am I missing a step? making any mistakes?

I will really APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!!!!... i live in a litthe town in Ecuador, Ibarra... very charming, but TECH FREE ZONE!!.. so I have to fixed this myself!!!!...

Thanks a lot for your time and help...
