View Full Version : Anyone regret buying N900?

Just a question crossed my mind after seeing a few threads reporting problems with their N900 so I thought it would be nice to get your opinions.

Question is simple - do you regret buying the N900 because of software/hardware issues/problems and wished you waited for another few months until all the bugs had been ironed out?

Absolutely not, but I use it the way it's meant to be used.

No regrets. I expected some bugs and other issues, just as the iphone had on their first release a few years ago.

No. The more I use it the more I like it.

One or two days after buying it, I was thinking I should have gotten a droid or Iphone.
But the more features I learned to use, and the more things that I saw it could do that other phones can't, the more I started to like it.

I love it now. It's not perfect but the only way I'd give it up is if someone pried it out of my cold dead.... :)

No, I don't regret it. The phone isn't perfect(but then again what phone is), and it hasn't randomly rebooted lately, so I don't regret it.

Also, since I finally got MfE working I'm a much happier camper.

It's got problems, but not enough for me to return it. Good thing it has the T-mobile 3G bands though, otherwise I don't think I could deal. That's part of the reason I like it - the browser+3G kicks serious arse!

no regrets, although i bit upset with the news that the next Meamo 6 device will be out by end of next year.

Hypnotik,
no going off topic, how did you get your MfE working?

No regret whatsoever. Initially disappointed simply with the fact that it lacks many of the capabilities my N95 can do but the more I use this baby, the better we bond.

Nokia needs to rush with the new firmware upgrade to include:

1. Ability to have/create multiple profile. With different a choice of ringtone per profile.

2. Say Caller Name: Really missed that.

3. GPS. Improve the GPS to the current N95 standard or better.

4. MMS. This is not essential but it will be nice to have.

Also I've been working on my own blog and from reading yours I have an inspiration wellanywho is there any chance you coild throw in some tips on getting into command lines as in learning how to do it with your N900... also I like the way your doing segments but I wanted to ask if you could through in a video on some stuff... thanks

I wish I could add my 2 cents in but my processing order was canclled :( long story , its posted in the Amazon thread though )

No regrets at all!

I don't think it's a bad thing a Maemo 6 device will be out next year. I'm almost certain they won't release in for another YEAR and in one year's time, I'm more than ready for the next step.

Remember that Maemo 6 is supposed to be the final step in a long chain. That will ensure they don't rush it to market and we'll have the N900 community to occupy ourselves with until then.

My best phone ever!!! I used to be a die-hard Palm user. I loved the combination of touch screen and full qwerty on my Treo 600 and 650 phones. I've been in the wilderness jumping from device to device trying to get a modern device that has the level of control and functionality that they used to have.

This phone is what I've been waiting for since the Treo 650!

EXACTLY!!!:)

These were my thoughts exactly when I got my 900 set up the way I wanted it. I put off getting an Iphone because I've been a hardcore palm devotee for a bout a decade now. But then I found out about the n900 and its 32g and I couldn't bring myself to get the pre with its measly 8g of non expandable storage.

Not at all, I love that thing and i got exactly what i expected because i informed me BEFOR i bought it but it seems that not all of the early adopters did that....

The world would be better place if all users would do that. Buying it because your a Nokia fan or because the blonde girl in the shop told you too will result in getting what you where told to get and not getting what you want... just my 0.02$ ;)

One of the best buy of my life. The incredible thing is that before I new it existed, I was considering buying a Samsung Omnia Pro B7610. Only it's lack of availlability made me shop further and stumble upon the N900. And I've been oh so glad since.

I'd not change N900 even for iPhone 4 or Samsung Galaxy SII (if I had limitless budget I'd buy iPhone after all... to sell it and buy N900 :) )

Best phone ever 4me. In it's time K800 was great but in our time, N900 exceeds all the iPhones and Galaxys 4me. AFAIK no other phone can run Debian apps. So IMHO nothing but a successor can withstand with N900.

I love this phone despite its downsides such as it gets laggy time to time. After ownig a bunch of Symbian phones from Nokia and getting different models each few months I bought N900 as my first touchscreen phone from ebay after the price dropped a little. After 15 months I still have it and cant imagine a device that could replace it except N950 which is anyway not for general public :( Of course Iam going to get N9, but I feel that I will miss the keyboard so badly...so maybe I decide to stick with this amazing device for rest of my life ;)

its just complete disaster this elop/wp7 thing

i dont regret buying it two years ago, but i do regret that i dont use it for all its worth. i guess what i wanted then and what i want now are different. i see my wife with her shiny iphone 4 and how quick and easy she gets around her phone and how reponsive it is. my N900 takes much longer to do almost every task. i almost refuse to even use it as a camera anymore if my wifes iphone is around. over all i HAVE been happy, just feeling its not the super phone it used to be or i supossed to be anymore. reasearching now on mx nesxt phone.. I love my N900, don't know when there will be a phone to match it so I will soldier on. I did have to fix the USB bt that was an easy surface mount solder job for a guy who builds ham radios for a hobby. It runs Debian, I can use my regular ham radio applications with it. The plethora of standard input/output options means I have used it as a desktop machine on vacation with a bluetooth keyboard, mouse, and TV set, a dream from the 80's. I managed to squeeze 10 years form the Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, hope I wont need to keep my N900 that long. OTOH I don't see an open Linuxy replacement on the horizon yet.

Buying my n900 was the best investment I've made in a phone. My first n900 had some touch screen issues which, after a few services, I got a full refund for. I then bought a new N900 for 200 $ less then the original one and now that my new n900 had been in on service i got a E7 in replacement that i will crave swapped for a N9 in a couple of weeks. :D

Best 600 $ i've ever spendt!

well i have 2x N900 now so can't say i regret buying a N900, been looking around but nothing still really says YES!!!

only cool tech but not in one compleate package, like a new galaxy with a 5.3" screen with a res of 1280x800!!!!
but still missing all the functions +OS that the N900 has.

Can you 'make' any program you want (except GL maybe but still possible to port to GLES) on any other phone? I had a dream like 10 years ago of having a full linux box in my pocket. Nokia with N900 made it come true. I'm seriously thinking about buying another one as there are no viable alternatives currently. So to answer your question: no.

No regrets whatsoever.

Right now, I've had the N900 for 1 year and 9 months. This is a milestone for me since I've been a 5-6 phone a year person for the past 10 years.

The only bad thing about the N900 is that all other phones from now on will be judged based on its capabilities.

No regrets whatsoever. I've had the device since it first came out and have bought 4 total. And so many thanks to this community, I have learned so much. Just recently learning to create apps using monodevelop on the phone and have learned so much about Linux and still more to learn and explore.

And I own a Apple Macbook and since getting the N900, I have stopped using my laptop for over 1 yr now. Only needing the laptop to reflash the N900's and the occassional use of the Handbrake software and cd burner on the laptop. Luckily for most part using transmission for bittorrents gets me most of what I need.

I am sorry, I did not mean to indicate that your N900 is old of age.

I retired mine because after having an unexpected a bath, it did not work very well. Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GPS were not working. 3G were working only sporadically. And the thing would only turn on when connected to a charger. Plus the battery ran hot.

It's not retired because it's outdated, it's retired because it's not very functional any more. As I said... I've loved and lost.

If only it supported AT&T's network with full 3G speeds... EDGE is not a great speed to surf the web.

I travel quite a bit, (phillipines/singapore/Indonesia currently)
and because I prefer to not be flinging SIM cards about
and because I always have 2 n900s on at all times,
I got one of those portable 3G-GSM - WiFi hotspot gadgets
to address the need for top-speed access.
That also keeps the roaming charges down to just voice/sms.

My only regret about buying the n900 is discovering
the fact that it will still be another year or two
before anything appears to surpass it in the
GSM phone has keyboard runs linux and can be hacked category.

The N900 set a bar for me. Because of the N900 I know exactly what I look for in a smartphone. It taught me that I would never want an iOS phone or a phone without hardware keyboard.

i regret buying mine. I used to walk into phone stores and get slightly giddy with all the different phones and types and special features that i could play with. Now i just walk in, stand in line for half an hour, tell them my n900 is playing up and send it away for repair while very anxiously hoping it's being fixed.

As much as i love it, i hate that it's made every other phones into, "Just another phone"

2nd best phone I ever owned (next to Nokia 3120 - meaning it did what it was meant to do perfectly). I purchased it the first week it came out, I flew out to NY to the Flagship store and picked one up. I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into and I I am very pleased with everything.

HTC Wildfire > HTC Desire > Nokia N900 ... i'll buy another one even if it explodes for unknown reasons...

It's just perfect.

At least, it doesn't restart when i'm surfing like the Desire does and i can really use the GPS. (Yes, the Desire restarts even there).

Quite simply put, the fact this is my primary phone almost two years since it came out speaks volumes. I have an android phone for work and the only thing I use more on that phone than my N900 is Google Navigation. I really wish they'd brought over the full Ovi Maps experience to the N900. Might be my only regret with it so far.

Other than that the openess is something else, once you use this phone and try using an iphone or an android you quickly feel how limiting they are. It still sets it years ahead of other devices. Fcam and the things I can do with it wow my photo nerd friends, thats just one example. I hate to say it but its looking like the N9 is going to be my last Nokia. I can deal with a good vkb which by all reports it is supposed to have, but I will not deal with anything closed source like wp7. Android will have to suffice after my N9, but I won't be ecstatic about it.

a friend told me about this phone. I was using a blackberry at the time. I read about how open it was and bought it right after release from newegg. 12/08/09 Paid $560. Still using it without a problem. Love the keyboard and how well it still operates. The only problem that's slowly becoming more important is surfing the net. The processor speed, lack of flash and browser are slowly becoming obsolete as compared to android. I'm afraid I will be moving onto an Android soon but to say I regret having the n900.......NO!!!!!!.

i don't regret it. i have owned a 3210, 3310, 5510, 6230, cingular 8125, and htc kaiser. i even bought an ipod touch 4g out of curiousity but sold it to my aunt with some sales pitch that i'll turn it into a cheaper iphone 4 by buying apple peel. i got an n900 even though i barely know what open source is. all i know is you're free to do whatever you want. glad i made the right decision.

even till now, i'm having a hard time finding my next phone. n900 set the bar too high in meeting my expectation for a new device. i'm just leaning over android because of flash, ym/skype video call, and the support its getting. the closest device that passed my taste are mytouch 4g slide and sharp aquos 007sh...

i dont regret buying it,

i only regret buying it in Qatar.... worst country of all to buy mobiles, 1. high prices 2. No international warranty 3. Any problem is attempted to be repaired, not replaced with like for like. In case it cannot be repaired, you need to BUY a new phone.

I came back yesterday sick of arguing with the biggest nokia care center... cant believe nokia in this sick country.

I regret buying the N900 for one reason: it raised the bar too high.

I can't find a suitable replacement, and thanks to Nokia there isn't a worthy sucessor. If the N9 had a keyboard..I would consider it. And android is just not good enough.

No regrets, even though I had the USB connector agony and I've been without the N900 for nearly 3 weeks while I persuade Nokia to do the right thing! The N900 is the ultimate Swiss army knife of mobile devices: it does pretty much everything, and if it doesn't then finding solutions is rarely far away.
Could it be better? Sure - longer battery life, better bluetooth, maybe... However, compared to other devices it wins on all-round capability, IMO.

it's the best internet tablet/smartphone/handy/whatsoever on the world ^^
I don't regret it at all, i'm using it since two years now and it's way much better than iphone and android (which the n900 supports :D)
i really love the keyboard of this device. in my opinion it is unbeatable as internet tablet/smartphone/handy/whatsoever by the other devices (at the moment)

i bought mine around 2 years ago and extremely regretted not buying an n97 at first cause all the bugs in pr1.0 and me and that not having much prior experience with linux thought the phone was a joke but now i wouldnt switch it for any other phones (the other day my cousin came to show off his iph4s and slander my "fossil" but man should you have seen me when i wiped the floor with spending the entire next hour showing him 10000000000 things possible only with the n900)

On the verge of getting a second one. So, I guess the answer is "no". The only regret I have is that I did not take my own thoughts seriously: The thought that this n900 would be a one time deal and that I should've bought two to begin with.

Surely you can still source N900 around if you shop and do your homework on the sellers :)

There aren't many N900 left for sale (genuine ones I mean) but that doesn't mean that they are no longer for sale anywhere.

I myself am happy that I got three of them and I'll just stick to just having three. Yes I'm probably rubbing in a bit of ego on the other hand :D

Many people who regret buying N900 are long gone. The only ones left are diehards. Hence you should not be surprised to get highly skewed opinions.

I no longer use mine but I don't regret having bought it. Got lots of good use out of it. But the N900 is now two years old and a lot has happened in mobile devices during that time. I had planned to get an N9 but Nokia seems to have made a complete botch of that in the US.

yeap, u are right.
i take nokia after sony-ericsson did a great job trowing his phones as fast as possible, and now i'm returning to the same story.
ghetting tired of producers not taking care of their expensive product after took the money from u.

so, sometimes i regret the poor proper support, even the community is doing huge efforts to keep it up do date.

I regretted buying my N900 so much that when it finally broke down to the point where I couldn't reliably use it as a phone I went through the effort of bidding for a second hand one in Europe (I'm in the USA) to get my hands on a replacement + extra batteries.

So, negative regret, I suppose.

That said, I can understand some people wanted more out of the N900 than the N900 was offering, and didn't care for the stuff the N900 did great. And some people had higher hopes for a the line of gadgets of which N900 was a part. The Nokia N900 is awesome, but it's currently a dead end. And the N900 is also unlikely to be followed by an equal phone in a different line for a while - some of us got used to the N900 as is, and switching when these N900s are outdated beyond repair and usability will suck, partly because of the actual supperiority of the N900 and partly because getting used to it will make everything else seem worse.

But at any rate, I for one am happy with the N900 (albeit I got it late enough that a lot of the bugs were known and at least some fixed). No other single piece of technology has ever brought me as much happiness since I first got a computer.

I think Nokia marketing actually had it right, what makes the N900 so good is the fact that it isn't a smartphone, it really is a "Mobile Computer"! Why settle for carrying around just a phone with some smarts, when you can have a full blown computer in the same space in your pocket?

I agree with what many others said in this thread. My regret comes from not finding a viable option as my next device, there isn't anything like it!
