not sure what's going on.

I can log in to the ovi store site (store.ovi.mobi) and log in with my ovi account and it automagically updates my pixelpipe plugin and Bounce Evolution. I also double checked they came from that specifici ovi store repository.

It can't however install application directly from the mobile website if I press download on an item. So no backgammon for me yet :(

I too can access the URL given in this thread and browse the store as well as log in, but downloading applications (tried a few games) did not work. At times it seems to download something and then fails.

I guess this is why the store is not yet open anyways... maybe they are still in the process of getting it fully operational and some markets are more ahead than others?

Sorry to tote this old horn, but N900 is not Nokia's flagship, it is a tech-head Internet tablet with phone. Maemo is a work in progress and with regards to the OVI Suite too.

Expect lots more incomplete things. It should not be a surprise.

Nokia's currently running internal tests on Ovi Store 4 N900. It’s not live or open 2 downloads. An update will be coming soon

And said that, you can to install applications from that repository with apt-get. I'm not going to say how because is said in many places.

There are a lot of simple games and applications from offscr (http://www.offscr.com/). What I find more interesting is that they are done with Qt.

I don't know if this changed anything, but before using apt-get I did log into the URL above and tried to download the games from OVI Store - this did start the app manager and did add the OVI repository.

I guess without this the apt-get would not have found the packages.

Earlier in this thread there are manual instructions for adding the OVI repository too.

sorry for being a noob but, what do you mean you used app-get? where can i get it?

First: I don't recommend doing this if you are a noob without Linux experience.

But what it means is got to xterm (press ctrl+shift+x for example) and type for example the command: apt-get install offscr-solitaire

It fetches the package from an online repository and installs the application. Instructions for adding the required OVI repository are earlier in this thread.

Do not do this unless you understand what you are doing, so please Google and research this beforehand!

it's getting dependencies for me as well. use

sudo gainroot
apt-get install offscr-solitaire

for example.

To clean up downloaded .deb files

cd /var/cache/apt/archives
ls
[you should see a bunch of .deb files, check they are the ones you installed, then...]
mv *.deb /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/

And then you can delete them manually from File Manager app.
I'd rather not say how to delete *.deb just in case anything goes wrong!

Edit: You can replace * with the filename if there are other .deb files in there that you don't want to move.

Well, because Nokia executives says it is not?

Maemo is, as announced by Nokia, at 4 out of 5 - one step from consumer smartphone readiness. It is not yet ready to be a flagship and they know it - thus the announced it accordingly.

Go to any Nokia site and check out which phones are listed first in their product pages. The N97 models. That is the current flagship because N900 is not yet a full consumer smartphone and Maemo is not yet ready to carry flagship torch content etc. wise.

christexaport

Fair enough. I was asking for your specific opinion. I am satisfied with the answers, and agree philosophically. I'm just wondering if that changes with M6? Thanks for the Linux help, guys. Enjoying the new games. How did you figure out the filename to download from the repo, btw?

IMHO maemo is no where near being Nokia's flagship OS, it as ability to become so but we are still a year away from a main stream version of maemo and releasing it don't automaticly mean it will become so, that's up to the consumer to decide not the people pushing it

Strange, I've used apt-get clean, but now when I try to refresh emails or use conversations i get the message:

unable to receive or send new messages.
Device storage full.
Remove data to free memory.

Any ideas? I can't seem to find a setting to save to memory card.
I've installed all of the offscr files, while i only moved the initial .deb files.

Reboot. The files seem to be getting locked open, so even deleting them doesn't actually free up the disk space until you reboot. This has (supposedly) been fixed, so the next firmware release should eliminate the problem.

Hi,

we've been testing the Ovi Store on N900 ourselves for a while. Hence, we put it into a live system for a moment. We are done with our little test round and closed the Ovi Store from the live system again. Nevertheless, we will be open the Ovi Store soon for everybody (and it will actually work then).

It's only an interface allowing remote control of a specific display system (presumably from onedotzero.com) - this was set up outside the building for one of the big Maemo meetings and people could remote control it. Outside of that environment it's absolutely useless.

While I am happy for the information - it is yet another example of how the community has to force information out of Nokia. if we had not started this thread I guarantee we would still be in the dark regarding the store. Seriously - Nokia should spend perhaps a few bucks on hiring someone who can actually provide us with information PROACTIVELY as opposed to REACTIVELY.

No offense meant Peter - but the closed house system Nokia is working at the moment - ISNT!.

Also please tell me that we don't have to wait until next Spring to get a freaking app store - even if its the old Ovi store.

Nokia sold N900's eligible for $50 rebates if bought between November 16th and December 31st. One of the terms is that you activate Ovi Store on your N900.

Ovi Mail, not Ovi Store.

No, Ovi store. Read the rebate form

Huh. I clearly misremembered that. My apologies.

Well, you can activate an Ovi Store account right now through the web. You just can't select the N900 as a device there yet. The rebate form does specify clicking the on-device icon though. Ah well, never trust a rebate.

Try it in something other than the Maemo browser. The Ovi Store returns the "not available for your device" error when using Maemo browser but in other browsers you can see the list of applications that are available for the N900. The applications are not installable at this time.

About half of the Ovi Store-to-N900 process works. That's intriguing. Using my desktop computer and Firefox, I can log into Ovi Store. On the "Account" page, I identified my phone as the N900 and typed in my mobile phone number. Ovi Store sent me an SMS, asking me to confirm my phone number. I confirmed by clicking on the URL in the text message.

At Ovi Store, I tried sending the "Snow Globe Touch" application to my N900. Just a few more days since Nokia is saying Ovi Store for N900 will be "Live" by end of this month which gives them just a few more days. I just think we are gonna be shafted again by one of two things or maybe both:

1) A delay in Ovi Store going "Live" since Nokia's middle name is "Dee-Lay"

2) Ovi Store being short of cool, or amazing, or awesome apps. I think it's gonna have a bunch of junk and only reason Ovi Store goes live is just to quiet us all for a few more weeks or months.

Now true, its a new handset, but Nokia are disgracing themselves but not shifting gears and letting us access the store NOW.

Why? Im not a reviewer, or a member of the press. So I got my phone early because I ordered it through the proper channels. Now im being penalised for ordering it early. Yeah, thanks for ordering our new N900, but you wont really be able to do anything interesting with it until early 2010. Gee thanks.

Umm. Would you really rather go to iPhone? You can sell yours and go to iPhone if you believe it is better for you.
Nokia just won a LOT more fans with the N900. Don't think they disgraced themselves. Definitely a win-win from what I can see.

BTW, iPhone had NO apps when it was first launched also......

N900 had more than few hundred apps from the get-go due to the Maemo open source community.
Everyday, we are getting new apps either created or ported to Maemo 5. Install appwatch.

There are many Twitter apps (Mauku, Witter etc) and now Twtter is also integrated into the phone also with a new plug-in.
With facebook, just use the lite website with your browesr. Why need a separate app? Then put a bookmark shortcut on your desktop. Voila. Facebook app! :p

www.lite.facebook.com (a lite version of Facebook.com that I even prefer on my desktop and laptop since it strips out half the crap you see on Facebook now)

And if you want a more iPhone version of Facebook there's.

www.touch.facebook.com

Combined with the facebook pipe to upload photos, or pixelpipe with the facebook pipe active it pretty much does everything a dedicated Facebook app would do anyway.

Me too - I've got mahjong to the point where I can never beat the high scores... I want the playing cards now!

I suspect that will happen the same day as the new firmware - access to the store may well be part of that bundle.

Noticed that Nokia has finally also added full finnish localization. Altough this is propably the first time I don't prefer localizaton to my native language.

Ovi Kauppa looks quite bizarre. At least Ovi Store was like any other generic brand. Ovi Kauppa is literally "Door Store" in finnish. It's as if Nokia has started selling doors.

theres a trick once you have logged in to click a link - it then sets your device to the N900 and you can browse apps, still can't download. Unfortunatley the link is on my other pc :( - tis mentioned on here a few times somewhere though :)

Arghh... past new years, and when opening the Ovi Store icon in applications (N900), the browser freezes, and says not responding. The page title still says "Ovi Store coming soon" though...

The Nokia N900 page used to say "Software Update Coming Soon," now it doesn't.

Although... we all know when soon is... coughacouplemonthscough...

I have been to curious again and went not via ovi-store directly but http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications/ovi-store/1/0/0/#content
works for me.
including frings, though i do not need that app so far.
have fun.
did download qik and it simply starts the apps manager.
if this is all nokia has for the ovi-store so far, well it is a bit lame but better than nothing.

That's not the Ovi store. That's Maemo select.

Go to the ovi store: http://store.ovi.com/

Then click on this: https://store.ovi.com/account/settings/set-device?terminalId=N900&fragment=1

The open the ovi store again. You will see something different. ;)

I wonder when Nokia gets its act together with this Ovi stuff;

I just visited the Ovi Store again, which I haven't done in a while, tried to find the N900 in the device list but couldn't find it so I closed the dialog. Now I get every time an error message in the Flash video saying

faultCode:Server.Error.Request faultString:'null' faultDetail:'null'

I can tap on a button saying "null".

It is just so embarrassing for Nokia to have these kinds of errors on their services.

Hi Kypeli, did you follow Kathys instructions?

1)Go to the ovi store: http://store.ovi.com/

2) Log in to Ovi Store (Or register and then log in) (Won't work if you don't)

3)Visit this link,
https://store.ovi.com/account/settings/set-device?terminalId=N900&fragment=1
It will set your device to the N900 (Sometimes i have had to click it twice for it to work. - do it until you see a cheapy comic version of the N900 appear on the web page. That will mean the device has been set.)

4) The open the ovi store (http://store.ovi.com/) again. You will see something different.

Thanks for the tip! This hack did work for me too - cool :D

But you are right, I didn't do that, but I wanted to use the OVI Store first as a normal customer with an N900 :) And then I am faced with this error message. I didn't try to trick the OVI Store or anything and that is what irritates me even more than not having officially support for N900 in OVI Store.

lol well it's not open :)

I think many many reasons have been discussed here in the past few weeks, but it sounds like they are holding back for a reason. And also we are waiting for a new N900 patch/firmware update, Could mean these two events could happen at the same time? - a problem with either could be holding it up.

For now there are new applications being added daily into the extras repository :) - and the testing one is building up fast!

Was there anything you really really wanted in the ovi store?

Hmmm.... Isn't it open for many other devices? When I go in there (using my laptop browser) and login, the site redirects me to some update-your-information page. If I cancel that and don't choose my device at all, the store goes nuts like Kypeli described. Definitely bad behavior by the site.

Those touch games are not real games. Those are just fun apps. A game will consist real game developers such as Rovio / Gameloft/ ETC. It's just the matter of Nokia if they'll support us with this developers. I wouldn't mind paying 5-10$ a game. App store already sells them for that price. N-Gage disappointed much. N900 supports 3D games and it's best not let it go a waste right? and port games are limited.

I really hope Nokia will soon get their act together.

First they abandoned a far superior platform a few years back (S90 on the 7710) in favor of a way inferior one.

And now we have the N900 with great hardware and OS but which was first delayed for a long time, is still buggy as hell in quite a lot of software aspects and months after the release there's still no official app store (maemo.org is great but it's not suitable for paid applications).

As it stands now I get the feeling the N900 will probably be my last Nokia device and that's coming from someone who has been a customer since the 7110.

Cube is buggy (i get 11 yellow square and only 8 white after a restore, wtf?), just like backgammon (disappearing pieces and crashes) by the same offscr company.

Are you hiding the user agent at all? If so, you'll need to uninstall that - the Ovi store uses the user agent to detect whether the phone can connect or not. Otherwise, you could try deleting the microB configuration (rm -rf /home/user/.mozilla/microb) and see whether that clears it up.

I had to install an update to Maemo twice before I could get into the Ovi store. The first one was around 28mb and the second 50-odd mb if I remember right. Even if you've installed an update, double check there isn't another update sneakily sitting there.

hi I found some videos that was possible to pay for...so were they there before or is it possible to buy apps now?

I found audio books that I could pay for... and download...

But I couldn't listen to them because they were digitally restricted, which is something Maemo5 will not be able to handle. (Handled in Harmattan.)

It's real fraud, but they won't do anything about it.

Could be it's the same with these videos. Try. ;)

The hopeful thing is that when it recovers, we might actually get some decent content.

In fairness, it was down all day yesterday as promised. And by down, it was really completely down, not just unreachable from devices.
It actually came back up yesterday about 45 minutes early, and while you can select N900's as your chosen device when visiting it directly from a PC, it won't open directly from the device, presumably due to some further extended maintenance dealing with bringing proper Maemo compatability to the store.

One can but hope that 'proper maemo compatability' will mean an end to quantities of paid apps that don't actually run on the device.

I didn't notice that it was down yesretday - I noticed the anxieties today that it's not reachable from the device.
