Let's do an informal survey:
Whose screen has been trouble free, and whose has been nothing but trouble?
Also, if you could, indicate how long you have used it and the frequency of its use.

Mine has been trouble free since April.
Used daily. I almost never turn it off, even at night. I just let it go to sleep. I don't even use the cover very often. Made in Estonia.

I am on my 4th screen now.
The first one broke after 3 months and it took 2 weeks to repair.
The second one broke after 1 month and again i had to wait 2 weeks.
The 3rd screen lasted only 10 days. This time i asked for a replacement unit and i had to wait over 4 Months. But i didn't get a replacement, they just swapped the display again.
I use my 770 daily and never turn it of on purpose.

:) My Nokia 770 works perfectly even after a year. I got it in January 2006. Its made in Estonia. No battery problems, no endless reboot loops, no Wi-Fi connection issues. I use it daily and charge it when it is readay to die. It has been upgraded as and when required. Worked well with T-Mobile GPRS till T-Mobile blocked GPRS. I will not say that I was too cafreful with it. I use it rather normally and without too much care. :)

My original 770 worked great no problems at all, but then it got stolen. Brought a new one and had the wsod right out of the box as well!!!! Does anyone in the manufacturing plant bother to turn these on before packing them into the box.
Anyway, got another one and so far so good.
Is there some sort of Linux command that could give us some hardware info about the screen?
I've had mine for about a month and it's been trouble free. It's Made in Estonia, but I've read about those having the wsod also.
I use it daily, never shut it completely down. Just slid the cover on when not in use and charge it when it gets to about two bars.

The ones from Estonia seem not to suffer from CoD...crack of doom...but they do still suffer from wsod.
Sound's like Estonia has the "good glass". My 770 is also made in Estonia, and just the other day I accidentally dropped it from about 2.5 feet onto a marble tiled floor [with case on] and there's not so much as a dent on the thing anywhere. Big thanks to whoever designed the 770 and case to withstand such a shock and continue to work perfectly.

good glass or good case? The brand new one that I recently got had the wsod right out of the box and was from Estonia.
I stand corrected. It sounds like the first batch of 770s was pretty solid as there weren't many issues. As Nokia scaled up production to meet demand, a noticeable number of defective units got mixed in. Not sure if Nokia solved that problem, but I'm betting the oldest and the very newest tablets are less of an issue for folks. I likely got one from the first batch, but it might be difficult to determine if the newer units are truly new or just have been on the shelf for a while.
We need more stats. Stat!

:)
I think you are correct Grass-hoppah !!
The original batch of Nokia 770 was pretty solid and stable ( Cos I got one). The quality of the later batches are rather questionable. But then recently I saw a rather beat up Nokia 770 at a Circuit City Store. For a Floor model it looked OK. No crack between the USB and the Battery charger hole. Screen looked nice probably because they had a screen guard on it. There were some light identations on the lower right and left side edges. All in all, it looked healthy. ;)
first was dead on arrival, returned it.
second died after a month, nokia repaired it, has been fine for 3 months

I could start another poll but I would want to know the range of serial numbers, and we could track it by that - and we could analyze the MTTF as well.

Mine sees use regularly as a sketchpad for a 3 and 4 year old - they love Sketch. If they can't trash it, it's got to be good. :)

I came to this forum after my screen went south, trying to find out if this is chronic problem or not.
Looks like it is. :-(
I was probably on my fifth reboot when it failed. I just got a replacement from CompUSA with no hassle, but haven't plugged it in yet to try it (will do that after this message is posted -- boy I'm nervous)
So now I wonder if I should reboot the thing around 10 times to try to see if it survives them all. As long as I'm within my CompUSA return window, I should be able to swap with no hassle -- should.
fwiw the bad one was from Estonia -- and so is the replacement.
Now to give it a try...

I put the new one on charge. The charging screen came up and the screen is fine. Think I'll let it get a full charge before mucking with it any more.
Have to admit, I'm really nervous about the thing now. Thinking about getting that TAP (extended warranty at CompUSA) now. I think I can add that fairly soon after the purchase. Might save me from having to ship it to Nokia down the road.
