tigert wrote an awesome guide on doing so: http://www.tigert.com/2009/12/02/maemo-extras-packages-droid-fonts/

Are you able to be a bit more specific on what didn't work? For instance:
Were you unable to become root?
Did you have trouble entering the Perl command?
Was an error message displayed after you entered the Perl command? If so, what was the error message, exactly?
Did the Perl command appear to succeed without the font change taking effect?
Another problem entirely?
It worked for me, in the Marina theme with the following command (in root):
perl -pi -e "s/Nokia Sans/Droid Sans/g" \
/usr/share/themes/marina/gtk-2.0/gtkrc \
/usr/share/themes/marina/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.input_method \
/usr/share/themes/marina/matchbo*/theme.xml

How would I go about using my own font instead of the Droid font? such as if I want to use Tahoma or something?

Hey guys, I am a complete noob with terminal. Could somebody please explain how I put the perl command into terminal? do the "\" signify presses of the enter key? do I separate lines with the enter key? I am not sure of the keystrokes that are needed to input this correctly and to execute it... :/ any help would be appreciated.

Try perl instead of pearl :)
EDIT:
Just tried it for myself, looks great :) Thanks a lot!
EDIT2:
Just realized it does not realy change everything. At least these remain unchanged. Any clue how to change them?
- Font in Conversation
- Font of the name on 'Desktop Contacts'

The \ mean that it should all be in one row. Problem is, that the row is so long, it will wrap anyway.
You can copy all into one row and submit it in xterm. Caution, this is one row, unfortunately the forum wraps it :(
perl -pi -e "s/Nokia Sans/Droid Sans/g" /usr/share/themes/alpha/gtk-2.0/gtkrc /usr/share/themes/alpha/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.input_method /usr/share/themes/alpha/matchbo*/theme.xml

i'm creating new fonts with matching size in config file.
if it's nice i will post it here.
Bumping up this post.
Need to figure out how I can use my own font (other than droid). e.g. Helvetica. Anyone have reliable/tested instructions?

I found some really good fonts that I'd like to use in my N900. How can I do that? I don't really want the droid fonts.
It worked for me, in the Marina theme with the following command (in root):
perl -pi -e "s/Nokia Sans/Droid Sans/g" \
/usr/share/themes/marina/gtk-2.0/gtkrc \
/usr/share/themes/marina/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.input_method \
/usr/share/themes/marina/matchbo*/theme.xml

yes it does but best thing if you use theme customizer (importing font) you can always delete the uncompatible fonts by just using filebox by going to this path.....
home/user/.fonts
no need to copy & replaced any fonts on
usr/share/fonts
if you got trouble using any uncompatible fonts....

what fonts did you use my friends??
by the looks of it (first pic) i dont see any different while in (second pic) that normal cause you can use any fonts on notes....
if TC fails to change your fonts as you said the delete all font in
home/user/.fonts
then try import the fonts using TC again...remember to change you current font to nokia sans(default font) first before deleting all fonts in the folder...if you dont then you will get a square fonts later on...

maybe you didn't fried the fonts (KFC) enough that way the fonts did not look the same :D:D:D:D:D hehehe...nah just kidding...
try change to default fonts then delete all fonts in home/user/.fonts
then import the font again using TC & use the KFC fonts again...if the problem still exist then the fonts might not be compatible with our device...

lol i've added that many fonts in that folder i'm willing to put up just thought there may have been a easier way just by changing a command line, even tried changing theme. just glad it isn't stuck on something totally bad :D
i tried this (http://www.tigert.com/2009/12/02/mae...s-droid-fonts/) but this is not working..

Because it's shortened / incomplete. He probably copied it from a forum / portal without being logged in, or similar.
