So, hopefully, the first firmware update for the N900 is not far off..
Anyone have any thoughts on what it might include in terms of fixes and additions (if any)?
Personally, I hope for a huge bug fix update.. Maybe some intel on MMS and potrait mode, but other than that.. bug fixes please, especially in the power management area, as widgets are currently unusable as they are the power sucking daemons of hell!

Only portrait mode for the web browser has been announced, so most likely, that's the only application that will gain portrait mode in the next firmware update.

Im hoping for
1. PPTP/L2TP vpn with user interface - and ability to control VPN based on Access Point (if 3G - default to vpn) if WiFi XYZ - no VPN - if WiFi XXX - enable VPN
2. More wireless power settings. Can we get 30mw and 70mw please. (10mw is great for power saving - but a bit on the low side..)
3. Less keystrokes when moving around. More organised icons
4. Owi Maps with full navigation and landmark sync with Ovi account
5. Flash killer (auto stop flash animations if no user interaction for XX amount of time) - even PC/Macs should have that feature.....
6. Better touch input - support for my fat fingers for zoom :-) Im not putting on fake nails just to do touch screen control..
7. And most important - better MfE - that just drives me crazy...

I hope for portrait mode in messaging conversation. Because it will make the N900 usable like a normal Phone with On screen keyboard. Easier to text with one hand.

You, and others, may want to look in on the "Has anyone from the Maemo team actually responded to any bugs?" thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=35976) where much of this discussion has already taken place.

What do you mean by "Folders"?
If you're looking for folders to store files you can do that with the File Manager. If you're referring to storing apps in Folders that is another thing.

Folders like every other S60 NOKIAS. File manager is not a folder. By the meaning of folder is to organize your apps in certain locations in the "More" when downloading apps everything cramps up together and is a burden to search for the specific one. Of course there are 4 Home Screens but organizing files will help a lot too. Also icons can't be moved except in the Home screens.

I believe he's referring to folder hierarchy in the application menu (or whatever it's called, the place where you launch applications from), not directories in the filesystem. :)

2- speed dial

5- Again the call log needs to show from which number the caller is calling (If his name contains more than one number)
6- Video call and activation of the front camera.

My first and foremost wish is a fix to the random battery draining. Often, it can go more than a day without being emptied, but then suddenly, it can just swallow a full battery charge in a matter of a few hours.. This is a software bug, I know it!

1. email client -- AWFUL. IMAP is buggy, nokia messaging doesn't work with other folders, and exchange 2003 isn't supported.
2. OVI Maps -- offline map loading (as we were told there would be), route-recalculation, turn-by-turn (don't hold up the first two features to focus on this one)
3. google contact / calendar sync (which will be fixed when they actually support exchange 2003)
4. iSync plugin / Nokia PC suite support
4. application folders
Most of the things I want fixed aren't that crazy... most are SUPPOSED to be working now.
The shitty email client is unbelievable, though. How do you do so well with conversations and so poorly with email?
no more random reboots!

I'd like to see some internet browser improvement. At times it will work flawlessly then for some unexplained reason the address bar will stop updating the address and will not show the progress bar when loading a new page. If i continue browsing for some time after this point the browser will become unresponsive. PLEASE FIX IT! :)
Other than that gripe i'm quite happy with the rest of the phone.

I'de like to be able to send music via bluetooth without having to use a secondary app (petrovic)
Have the ability to rearrange the menu
Have the ability to change the browser homepage.
They are all basic and standard things I've used from symbian but are neglected by maemo :/
I'de also like to see games and useful utilities along with an application/email/conversation lock.

There is no fax contact field in the nokia n900!
Please vote for bug 5742 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5742).
Lots of small bug fixes, improvement, stability, small feature requests and optimizations. And then, some bells & whistles features would be nice like the front camera integration all over the place.
But mostly, improving the battery, upgrading the kernel, fixing everything SIP related to actually make this a world phone, fixing Ovi Map as it is actually completely useless besides knowing where you are, some standardization of the zoom/volume feature would be nice too. Put back the ability to edit the keys in the terminal's bar.
I pesonally don't care about portrait mode much (can be fun ...) and really not about MMS (as it doesn't make much sense to pay to send individual crappy quality pictures when i can wait to get the internet or just email a url of my album later on or even stream to Qik.
So yeah, battery, battery, battery!
But basically, why not switch to a Ubuntu like bug fixing process?
Send OTA updates as other have suggested to fix small bug in packages...

a lot of the stuff I'd like to see is already been said, the only thing I would see in addition is:
a notifier that tells you when a package is not optified, or an option to tick that prevents applications that try to install more than files necessary on rootfs

They would do much better with quality if they posted indevidual bug fixes as they become available (into extras-testing) instead of storing it all up for a big release.

I concur, there doesnt seem to be a place for FAX in contacts. i have to admit I was highly amused by this bug .... sign of the times, fax is on its way out.
I will like to find:
* MMS
* bugs, battery draining optimizations, battery duration
* Improvements in email app( can delete multiple email in Nokia Messaging, speed, etc....)
* more phone profile options linked with connections mode and other configuration ( mode road = general profile + 10 mw wifi + 2G only + skype connection bussy + .....)
* more options in the conversations and phone app( open a new chat from a group conversation choosing the person)
* portrait mode in messaging, email and browser
* A widget or app where you can see conversations(IM, SMS and MMS)+calls+new emails. Will be easy to track all events.
It's almost christmas we have to believe in Nokia. My more than 60 days wait, change of my first send N900 due to reboots will have its final prize.

weird.. does no body here drive a car?
my first one is : Voice Dialing that all phones of the last X number of years all do have already.
second: dont bother implementing MMS.. Please dont spend anytime in that use your time for other stuff. (thats just my point of view)
but my top
1> voice dialing (now it is quite dangerous for me to dial somebody and i can get a ticket of about 200 euro's)
2> improve the email client A LOT... Imap Idle support! Send button in the status bar, Way faster in everything, A global new mail inbox over all inboxes (where you jump to if you get new mail) and a desktop widget that also displays the contents of that new mail box. new Mails that i open through the task mananger cant be deleted... If i delete an email it goes to the next one, i want to go back to the list! And i can go on and on... Emailing is one of the worst parts of the N900 that area with the next point is one of the big steps backward from my E90.
3> Fix navigation (feature wise update to S60 Ovi Maps 3 including voice navigation, paying for navigation is no problem)
4> google calender sync and integration (so multi calendars of google are mapped exactly like that in the N900... but i guess this will be third party effort)
5> browser fixes, this one is for me the biggest cpu hog. As far as i can monitor, i hope that overal they can improve cpu usage as much as possible because that would also mean better battery performance.

Agree with almost everyone. Better battery management would be great, I'd like to see a better battery, if not shipped with the devices, for sale for this soon. I almost couldn't believe such a large-ish device had such a small-ish battery, but that's not a firmware/software issue.
MMS messaging. For those of you who don't like it or wouldn't use it, that's fine, but why do multiple people feel the need to explicitly say not to include it? To some of us it is important, if you don't want it, don't use it and that's that.
Messaging in portrait mode with T9 touchscreen on an old style number pad so it could easily be done with one hand.
Navigation/GPS needs an all-around upgrade.
The ability to create custom profiles (at least one more? One for loud, one for silent, one for quiet).

I don't care if they have portrait mode for browser..it's useless anyway i think. Everything else ought to be in portrait.
I like to see an update of the App manager...it's pretty slow.
I like to see more features for video cam recorder
I like to see MMS...i can not believe that my old phone...like 10 yrs ago allow sending pictures through SMS and this phone can't??
I like to see an option to categorize all the apps you installed.
I like to see improve battery management.
I like to see a better file manager...where you can access and see everything....including .root folder
And most importantly, i like to see a better map navigation app (it's really useless OVI map whatever it is...i never bother ..it's too slow and it's just not good enough. Bring something that rival that of Google map navigation. Something that makes it useful to help you find direction quick. I know Syngic is coming but it doesn't announceyou the street name like Google Map Nav does.

First of all, copy and paste does not work consistently in all applications and in some places you have to get into edit mode.... Copy&Paste should work all over the place, it should be there all the time!!
MMS is something that i get a lot of and send so I would not complain about getting that.
Searching and sorting the notes app is also important (under calendar). I got a lot of notes and use it very much, together with Outlook.
those things disturb me most at the moment. Others are a plus :)

5. Individual Ring Tones for Contacts
6. Better WiFi flexibility (e.g. 30mW-50mW-70mW modes)
7. Cisco VPN Services Integration
8. More Portrait Apps (e.g. PDF reader)
9. Increased Power of FM Transmitter (built in, not by e.g. 118 command)

These are likely regulatory limitations, likely not something they can play with even if they want to. BTW changing WiFi transmitted power (trasmitted power != power consumption) does not really improve battery life (if N8x0 experiences are anything to go by).

Looking at some of these, I'm suprised no-one is expecting a pony and a ferrari in their update,.
At a best guess, it will have connection for 3 sims, a solution to the reboot problem, and a bit more speed and slickness. Anything else will be a bonus.

True, they've only had since September to work on it... so we should keep our expectations to ~3-5 bug fixes. Apparently, their entire team has been struggling to fix two bugs for four months.
Man, you're easy to please. At this rate, your phone will get new features in 2013-14.
I expect bug fixes. Maybe some minor functionality holes partly patched.
I have had lots of firmware upgrades on lots of hardware devices, and they rarely bring a lot of new functionality.
I most certainly do not expect them to come* with a new version of Ovi Maps. I honestly can't see any reason to believe they'd convert an old version of Ovi Maps into something that would work on Maemo, just to have it replaced a month or two later.
* as a firmware patch. I fully expect at some time there will be a full gps solution - as payware.

Bug and functionality holes fixes
Slightly improved performance, battery and camera
Ovi Store and Maemo Extras integration

No Ovi Maps improvement yet
This will mostly be a "bug fix" update. The latter one might add further funtionality. Hopefully there will be more firmware updates, aside from the first two...

Man, you're easy to please. At this rate, your phone will get new features in 2013-14.
Ahh, you don't see the point about it running faster, smoother and more slick. I strongly suspect most of the effort of the last couple of months has gone into changing things that will not make any Big Ticket impact. Maybe slightly improved battery life, faster load times, quicker transitions, the sorts of things that aren't noticed unless you use the device enough to notice an imporvement in performance.
In addition to which, I don't kid myself that issues like the 3 simcard compatibility is a 'small' or 'easy' fix.

No-one on the mobile network '3' can use an n900 at all on any sort of connection other than wifi. I'd say that was a pretty big bug.

No portrait mode for anything yet
No Ovi Maps improvement yet
This will mostly be a "bug fix" update. The latter one might add further funtionality. Hopefully there will be more firmware updates, aside from the first two...
Portrait mode is not important issue for me but ovi maps really nead improvement.

Hutchison 3G is a brand name under which several UMTS based mobile phone networks are operated in Australia, Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Hong Kong and Macau, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
By the way, the bug "only" applies to some 3 SIM-cards.

The bug comes from the brand's lack of 2G network, but the N900 should be able to recieve calls in 3G as well.

I don't understand why some of you guys are so hung up on portrait support for the web browser...
Why would someone want to be able to only see 1/2 of a webpage page width on the the N900?

I'd say its a pretty big deal that its not working on 3 sims! 3 network offers the best deal on data in the UK and if they don't sort it soon, its a fair chunk of the market IMHO that could be pushed away.
....and fixing 3/4 faults in the first release? I seriously hope they do better than that!!!!!!

ok what deal do they offer on data?
most networks have 600-800 mins 500 plus txts unlimited internet for 20 quid;; not sure on 3, its a network i know nothing about- it gets really bad reviews
but this is immaterial the n900 should work on all networks.

I'm on a flexT type deal. £180 of credit with unlimited internet for £26 per month.
I currently have a 30 day contract on Vodafone due to the problem but for £20 I have only 500mb of data and 600 mins call time, which on this phone I could easily go over 500mb.

This only applies to 3 because the carrier lacks a 2G network, which obviously isn't your operator's case.

No, I saw that, but since it was completely abstract I had no idea what you were trying to get at. I guess some massive "catch-all" category, so you could be "right" when this is released.
In addition to which, I don't kid myself that issues like the 3 simcard compatibility is a 'small' or 'easy' fix.
You must not be a developer. Perhaps a development manager subscribing to the "1 month baby with 9 engineers" mode of development? There is no way even a big bug occupies more than 2-3 engineers. It is totally counter-productive.
And IF they are putting more than that on it, I guess we see why the development seems to be so slow.

2. 3G Video Calls
This feature improvement would push N900 to market top!
0. Bug Fixes
10. Improved Power Management
1. MMS Support
That should be a first-priority for first F/W release
So, the first Firmware update wasn't all that some people would have it be. In example, it wasn't new. I didn't expect the app manager to get these huge category icons, for sure. And Nokia had prioritized some updates to partner company software installers. Oh well.
I hope someone had some of their bugs fixed.
