On the N900, Vagalume doesn't work for Last.fm; it's libre.fm only.
It's in the FAQs. Last.fm doesn't allow streaming to mobile phones.

Can't I just add the Last.fm data to the N900 version?
Since Vagalume is free software, there's no way to prevent you from doing that, but note that you might be violating the Last.fm terms of service. The Vagalume team takes no responsibility for that.
If you really want to do that, please don't use the Last.fm API key that comes with Vagalume. That API key is necessary to identify the client and you might be harming legitimate Last.fm users if you violate the terms of service using the Vagalume API key. Get a free key here.

You just need to create/download a file like this:

but with a valid Last.fm API key ( http://www.last.fm/api/account ), and then import it from Vagalume.

What?! I don't understand any of what you said. All I want to do is stream some music. I have a Libre.fm and last.fm account. Why won't it accept my login and just play? And if I need a file to play it, why doesn't the app retieve it for me? I don't even see any place to download this file. Since the file is needed, why not give instructions on how to get it, then import it into the N900? Or put "for rocket scientists only" in the details...

ok i finally got to the bottom of the story-that is for $3.00 USD a month it will work-yes folks pay and play on the latest version of vagalume if you want to use last fm-now if someone could do an app that downloads all the music to the memory card similar to streamripper then that $3 would be worth it

as far as i understand it, it's not about "a file" you would need to download. the problem is the API-key within this file. the API-key doesn't identify you as a user, it identifies the developer who wrote the application.
because accessing last.fm from your N900 violates their terms of use, the author of the application asks you not to change vagalume in a way so that it could access last.fm. doing so will result in last.fm banning his key... and all vagalume versions that run on real tablets and can still access last.fm.
so the proper way to do it is apply for your own API-key, modify vagalume and wait till you get banned.
this is what i understood. could still be wrong, but at least it's a good story. ;)

That's correct, thanks for summarizing it.
(and also note that Vagalume does not only run on Internet Tablets, it works on any GNU/Linux distribution -Debian, Ubuntu, etc.- and it is used by many people who haven't ever touched a Nokia Internet Tablet)

Ok, note that you're probably violating the Last.fm terms of service if you do this, but these would be the steps:
1. Download this file: http://pastebin.com/pastebin.php?dl=f49509cfd

The service doesn't change, read the original announcement here:
http://blog.last.fm/2009/03/24/lastfm-radio-announcement
In order to keep providing the best radio service on the web, we need to ask our listeners from countries other than USA, UK and Germany to subscribe for €3.00 per month
http://www.last.fm/group/Last.fm+Web+Services/forum/21604/_/517212/_/8966064
Only subscribers will be allowed to stream using API applications unless you negotiate a separate deal with us - we need to get the money to cover royalties.
The funny thing here is that, if what you say is correct, applications using the old API (e.g. Vagalume 0.7.1) still work even if you don't have a subscription. An that's a shame. I spent a lot of time adapting Vagalume to use the new API.

I don't think there is a bug in 0.8. It's just that last.fm hasn't turned off the old API. If and when they do, only 0.8 will work if and only if you provide a key.

Those who got LastFM working: did you insert a valid api key/secret that you applied for? I ask since Libre.fm works fine for my 8.1 install but I get a "Network connection error". I took the XML snipped posted earlier and modified it by only changing the old_streaming_api entry.

I tried downloading the XML file and changing old_streaming_api to 1 with 0.8.1 on an N900 (I figure that over WiFi would not violate the terms of last.fm), and I get a network error. This is with no key. I was hoping that this version would fall back to the working API. Is that not the case?

I was having issues earlier which I managed to resolve through taking a peep at the traffic going to/from my phone using a laptop w/ Wireshark and a Monitor-mode-friendly wifi card (iwl3945). Turned out I was using a bad keypair (I'd screwed things up in editing it a few times, unscrewed things by grabbing the pertinent part of the example file listed here (http://gitorious.org/vagalume/vagalume/blobs/raw/vagalume-0.8/data/servers.xml.in))
Do you have such a setup at your disposal? If not, you may be able to get the same results using the deb-chroot+installing wireshark. If you're unfamiliar with the above, I (and others I'm sure) can gently guide you in the right direction.

It defaults to playing the last selected station, so if you e.g. are listening to your neighbourhood, close Vagalume and open it again, pressing 'play' will play that same station.
I think that's a good feature, and it's working fine for me here.

Are you a Last.fm subscriber? I think you shouldn't have had any problems with 0.8 if you were a subscriber.
The thing goes more or less like this:
There are two radio APIs in Last.fm: the old one (unsupported by Last.fm and subject to disappear at any time) and the new one (http://www.last.fm/api).
Starting from v0.8, Vagalume uses the new one. If you're not a subscriber, it won't work. However, it appears that in some countries (including the USA) the old API does work even if you don't pay a subscription.
Vagalume 0.8.1 falls back to the old API in case the new one doesn't work, for non-subscribers in those lucky countries.
About the default radio station problem:
In both APIs, Last.fm provides two separate methods to choose a radio station (http://www.last.fm/api/show?service=160) and to obtain a playlist (http://www.last.fm/api/show?service=256).
If you only press play, Vagalume will just request a new playlist. It will not choose any station for you.
That makes Last.fm send a playlist of the last chosen station.
The problem is that it doesn't seem to work for everyone. I don't know if it depends on the country, the API or what. But I remember having always used that feature, even with the old API.
So the solution would be to select a default station in that case.

After flashing my N800, when I try to reinstall, it says I am missing libhildondesktop0, libhildonfm2 and libhildonwm0. Where can I find these files for down loading?
Edited: Sorry, I reflashed an old OS 2008. Disregard this post.

I would love to have Vagalume to support key shortcuts for loving, next track and so on.
Also, a good adition would be an integration with eSpeak to tell the name of the song and band that is playin' (or will start to play).
What do you guys thinks?
EDIT: the shortcuts apply to n810 and n900, like pressing the > key to go to next track, L to love track and so on...

There's Ctrl+L to love, Ctrl+B to ban, etc., take a look at the menus

It doesn't work here (n900).
BTW, my idea is to provide access to the functions without needing to look at the phone, so its great to use when it's dark, or at car.
For the same reason I told about the eSpeak extension!

My bad, I uploaded a package for Fremantle. I'll try to upload one for Diablo today.

I've just uploaded a package compiled for chinook:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8975
It should work in diablo as well. Tell me if it's ok and I'll prepare a new release with this patch.
Thanks!

Ah, you're right! With the introduction of the Maemo 5 menus we lost the keyboard shortcuts. Can you please file a bug about that?

Alberto, version 0.8.3-1chinook2 works great on my N800. Is version 0.8.3-1diablo2 identical and can it replace my "chinook" install?

I'll try to make a new official release soon, you should see the update icon in your device automatically when it's ready.

Alberto Garcia, I saw at bugzilla that you corrected the shortcuts for n900, did you put my suggestions as shortcuts too?
It was:
Skip song: right arrow
Stop: left arrow
Love track: up arrow (like thumbs up ;))
Ban track: down arrow (like thumbs down ;))
Looking for the release ;)

I find them a bit confusing to be honest... but you can always recompile Vagalume if you really want to use them.
Thanks for your comments anyway :)

Why do you think that's confusing?
I mean, when you love a song you do thumbs up (up arrow from keyboard), when you hate and want to ban it, you do thumbs down (down arrow), when you want to skip, right arrow, stop, left arrow...
That's a default behaviour...
The main reason I want it is that I mostly use Vagalume at sleep or doing other tasks. Having single keys to do what I need is pratical, since I'll not have to look at the screen...
Just touch the buttons, as I know where they're...
The eSpeak suggestion is because you'll hear a lot of songs you don't know, so it's, again, pratical to know the song without the need of looking at the display.
But you're the boss :)
Thanks!

vagalume has stopped working for me on maemo and easy debian.. i get 'connection error' on maemo and on easy debian it :connects, displays song info and image, but then 'squeaks'!
i've installed the codecs to play 720p, so if nobody else is having a problem, they'll be the main suspect.

I've been using Vagalume (Diablo version) almost every day, including today.
No issues at all on this end and I've never installed any additional codecs.
For me, it has always worked straight out of the box.

it's a rewrite of some of the central gstreamer libraries. but as the concentration was on video playback, maybe the audio bits didn't get as much attention. nobody knows for sure at the moment. pity , as i like libre.fm

Can you share the server file you are using, just in case that's what is causing problem.

I use Last.fm.
In the menu, Play Radio --> Artist similar to..., and then type in a band's name.

It says the same
"No more content to play"
Btw I can't select Last.fm from preferences. Under the Services, I can only select Libre.fm. And I don't seem to be able to play anything.

I'm not sure.
Perhaps you can "check for updates" in your application catalog.
Maybe you have an outdated version.

03-25-2012, 01:54 AM
Oh, you are using pc version? I was talking about one in maemo. If I am not wrong, Last.fm has some terms that one can't use it in mobile anymore (without paying at least). And the service drop down only has Libre.fm which doesn't seems to be working.
Addison
03-25-2012, 01:58 AM
I'm using an older N800 tablet running on Maemo 4.
And I've never paid for any services with Last.fm.
I'm more than happy with what they offer for free. :)
I really don't know why it's not working for you.
Heck, it still works on my old, first gen Xbox and I use it every day. :)

Hey Joseph.
Try going here for starters:

Do you get something that looks like this?

It's Vagalume 0.8.5
If you need extra help on this, I can give you the email of the guy who wrote this app.
He's actually really cool. :)
