Hi,
Does anybody knows how the screen will be protected since the nice slider is gone ?
Does somebody has a picture about this ?
Cheers, Jan

There is a soft case included, which is not very protective against hard surfaces. Other options must be used, such as 3rd party cases. I purchased one from CompUSA for $6 USD (PDA case) which is a little short but works.

I must admit.. after screen protecting my 770 for a year the screen still looks new. Seeing as I bet an n900 will be out 1.5 years from now give or take I am actually forgoing actual screen protection on my n800. Although I will keep my 2 year compusa warranty handy.

I guess they just expect you to take extra care. Don't take it outside, don't put it in a pocket, always keep it in a drawer...

Texrat, got a linky on that PDA case that you purchased? I'm interested in seeing it.

You're right - I promise this was the last one :)
(Today.)
I need a new travel charger for my Nokia phone and will buy one tomorrow. To make up for my behavior here, I'll get the Nokia branded one this time :D

The lack of protection is a big detractor for me. One thing about the 770, I could always smugly tell Palm owners that it came with a case; not that I had to shell out another $50 for a metal one.
If I wanted to surf from my couch I'd use a laptop. I want a portable interenet tablet to be yanked from my pocket at a moment's notice... not from some gawdy foam case reminiscent of those 'number 1' hands you see at football games.

The $6 semi-hard case was on compusa.com; don't have the exact link offhand. Browse to the one closes to the N800's size. ;)
No need to spend $50, Hedgie... this case works great. I especially like the strap.

Well, unfortunately, I searched compusa.com (since some people don't seem to know how :p) and the case I bought is no longer available from them. I did find it at another location for twice as much (:(), but at least the info is provided if you want to search further:
http://www.caselogic.com/koskin_pda_slip_case/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=57047
As I said, it's about .20" too short but still does the job.
THis one should work as well:

Come on guys, google for the win! ;)
A case is also a must for me, since I always carry it in my pocket. It seems that Nokia is actually selling a case as an accessory: http://www.europe.nokia.com/accessorieslink?s=N800Case

Anyone worked out how to order the Nokia N800 case online??
EDIT: Just found this link: http://shop.nokia.co.uk but it doesn't list the N800 carry case - typical! :)

I have also been looking for the offical nokia case but with no joy. I also called the team who ship the devices (direct.nokia.com) they didnt know where I could get one... the really funny thing was when I called a Nokia retail store in the uk, they thought I was talking about a n80...

As a quick fix, since I am now playing quite a bit with the n800, I have modified my Logitech PSP case, and it works a charm. All that needs to be done is snip a little piece of the rubber gasget where the three top buttons are -- both on the lid and the bottom -- those pieces of rubber simply pull out.. It even doubles as a stand, and since it is plastic, has no negative impact (that I have measured) on reception of wifi. This is only a temp fix, and didn't impact the ability to hold my PSP at all, either. Now I just want to find a film to cover the screen so that I don't scratch it... probably modify a PSP screen guard as well.
Thor
P.S. On the downside the case is wider than the n800, so it makes it bulkier, but since it is held very snugly it doesn't move around at all, and can be dropped in a bad or coat pocket with no misgivings...

Well, if you do get an N800, until you find a case, the plastic screen protector that comes with the unit, can stay on. If you pull the silver tab, while keeping the plastic down, you get a basic screen protector.

As a quick note to anyone who might be interested... the plastic screen protector for the PSP is EXACTLY the correct height for the n800 screen, and a slight cut from one end is all that is needed to protect the glass from scratches, etc. Could not have been better apart from being designed for the unit.

As for screenprotectors...
I currently use a Brando UltraClear screenprotector on my Nokia 770.
This one is specially made for the Nokia 770 and fits perfect.
In fact it is slightly oversized so there it 1/4th of a mm under the edges of the screen.
The only problem is ofcourse applying the darn thing.
Because of my mad skills I managed to mess things up and it does not look that good.
In the past I ordered some Brando Workshop Screenprotectors for my iPAQ and my current Palm T|X. (these are not the same as the ultraclear ones)
As those NOT ultraclear models seem to be a bit better in my eyes I ordered 3 of them, both for my Nokia 770 and Nokia N800 which is still in it's delivery wrap screen protector ;-).
When I receive them I will post a short review of them, both on the Nokia 770 and N800. (But as both are the same same (approx.) I do not expect any big differences).
Note that the Screenprotectors are only listed as Nokia 770, but I expect them to do fine on the N800 :D
Link to the Brando shop: http://shop.brando.com.hk/
Please note: Brando operates and ships from HongKong but as the prices are darn cheap, the shipping is 3 bucks or less and there is no customs charge because they shop in nice envelopes with ever better stamps :D

This suck, I think everyone should e-mail nokia and tell them how disappointed we are about the case, even the flip thing, it's totally pityful. If there is one thing that Nokia did wrong in N800 and everybody agree about, it must be the darn case. Nokia should redesign and offer a new case for N800.
Just a note about PSP screen protectors : they are the correct size, but as the PSP doesn't have a touchscreen, not always the correct thickness. I bought a pack (of admittedly very el-cheapo ones) that were so thick that the touchscreen digitizer didn't respond at all any more. I ended up reusing them for a lot of other stuff (like my mp3 and camera screens) but also bought a Brando specifically made for the 770 :-)

Is it really worth $13/piece for these? I usually paid somewhere between $10 and $20 for an entire package of screen protectors for my Palm. Are these reusable or something??

So the 770 screen size is exactly the same as that from the N800? And therefor it is save to order the 770 brand screen protector for the N800?
Can any one confirm this via specs or measuring if you happen to have them both.
Would appreciate it! Thanks.

Another confirmation that screen protectors for PSPs work fine...
I picked up a "Pelican for Sony PSP Screen Guard" package at Fry's today, and they're working fine. The height is an exact fit, and the width is about 5mm more than the N800's screen. They're easy to trim with a pair of scissors (although a straight-edge and razor is probably more foolproof). Since there's a slight gap between the device's screen and case, you can hide any imperfection in your cut out of sight.
I can't detect any difference in the touch sensitivity. I fiddled around with the Sketch program and 1-pixel brush, that worked just as before.
Now I'll just have to see how well they hold up to use.

Yes, these can be removed and washed and replaced.
There are two basic types of screen protectors: 1) The type where you get a set of adhesive protectors that you replace when they get scratched (which they get easily - the SD card in my Palm leather jacket SD pocket would scratch the screen protector), and 2) The removable/washable type, where you get maybe just a single one in the packet and you still pay as much as for a set of the other type.
I've got both types for my Palm PDAs, although I haven't actually tried to install the second type yet. It's still in the drawer (and it's too small for the N800 ;-)

I am using Screenguardz film protectors made specifically for the N800 screen.
Can order them from screenguardz.com and they are $9.99 for about 14. They are not sticky but adhere to the screen very well and come with a card applicator to rub them down.

I should add now that (as I mentioned in another thread) I've now tried one of those reusable screen protectors on my N800, and that was not a success. I think it's because the N800 screen is a bit soft, compared to the stiff protector. I'm guessing that the thinner, adhesive type may work better for this screen.

I just bought a set. $9.99 for 15. They're giving free shipping for a short time, too! Thanks for the tip!

I ordered the Brando screen protector because I like the idea of not having to regularly discard a screen protector. After some trouble getting it on without air bubbles or any dust underneath (the biggest cause of air bubbles), I discovered that the little cardboard cover/label that comes with it works well to press the protector on and to press out any air bubbles (push down next to the bubble and then squeeze it towards the edge.
It doesn't appear to interfere at all with the touchscreen sensitivity but I will continue to test it out.

They're very good. Mine's been on for two months now and there's not a single scratch on it. Added benefits are an excellent anti-glare layer (the N800's screen is very reflective) and a very tactile surface that works well with any stylus I've tried on it.
Yes, I do get 10% on every sale. :D

I know this isn't a film screen protector but would do you guys think about this waterproof case for the n800.

Do you think it would fit the n800, made for the psp but there seems to be room for a bigger device.

Basically, you get 3 protectors for EUR 8.95 + delivery. I wouldn't recommend it for punters from across the Big Pond.
But, you can always try to contact them:

I'm sure they understand English and maybe even will answer your questions.
