just found this info ... http://dailymobile.se/2010/01/01/nokia-n900-firmware-update-brings-long-press-symbolsnumbers/ not sure how true t is but i remember the n97 was the same and after the firmware update the qwerty was easyer to use as we didnt have to keep using the sym key.

Long press? Wouldn't that interfere negatively with key auto-repeat?

The only key I need for auto-repeat is backspace/delete. Thankfully, it doesn't have any symbols for long press.

Would be nice to get the long press back for Maemo, very nice feature instead of using the function key all the time.

Not if it is implemented in a non-free component of maemo.
