Whats the deal with people shouting in those TV shop ads?
i mean the ones where you can only buy it from ringing the number.
i'm irish and i'm watchign FSC online and i keep turning the volume down when the ad's are on because of all the shouting.

Are these adverts on really late at night? Maybe they're aimed at drunk people coming home from the pub? ;)

They come on during the day!
There's one advert (a GoCompare one) with an idiot tenor who insists on singing the loudest he possibly can, and it doesn't help that the TV network insists on increasing its volume during adverts. Takes the piss...

I know how you feel. That dude just keeps on singing in my head. Luckily, I'm immune to advertising :)
I do find, however, that I can jam him out with some RATM :)

So, a couple of years ago, I thought "What if my TV can automatically recognize the adds and mute them, and restore the volume when my movie is back on?". Seemed like a simple enough idea at the time, so I searched for TV sets implementing it... What do you know, I found out that several of the TV manufacturers had patented very similar ideas, but nobody was selling a device with an implementation...

I can't imagine why! It's not as if the ad companies would throw potloads of money at suppressing a patent like that...

Isn't CI+ the same idea, just the other way round?
No more fast-forwarding the ads on a recorded video... :(

Was good friends with deceased member Dimebag of Pantera. They're from Pantego, a suburb of Arlington. Best metal band not named Metallica.

in ireland we have this place called powercity. they had ads on tv that were all serious. was funny, some fella in a serious shouty voice trying to tell you about a sale. confusing at best.

It's a marketing technique, it turns your attention to the tv.

it's annoying cuz i turn ad's down or switch over when the shouty ones are on.
it's more like trying to portrait a sense of importance about it so you listen. even notice how the type of ad's cycle in style? because we get used to the techniques and learn to ignore them.

Isn't that more or less what Tivos are for?

Perhaps not... but then again, would TV manufacturers make a lot of money by building in such functionality? Imagine the sales pitch: "With our new technology, you can program your TV to get rid of the obnoxious loud commercials". See the problem? Alas, what actually drives sells is dumbing the technology down to make it accessible to more buyers, as opposed to making it more usable for the a select minority...

Can Tivos do that? In real time? Maybe I should try one...

whats funny is that everyone is talking about ads they hate, but their missing the point. The point of advertising is to get the product to stick in peoples head so they think about it, and thats exactly what's happened. Even though you might not have a good impression on the ad, at least you remember it. Look at the buckley's ad (it taste awful and it works) why would they say it tastes awful? because people will remember it...and thats always the goal

you're missing the point. I hate ads exactly because I remember them. I don't want "the goal" to be achieved, 'cause it's not my goal -- it's the seller's goal. I am not a seller.
Lots of folks have identity issues methinks: talking about what's good or society, for the country, for the planet, for Nokia or Apple, and never thinking if their own interests overlap with those of the said larger structures.

MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org/) is a great open source linux DVR/PVR software with automatic commercial detection and skipping built in. It makes TV tolerable.
IIRC their are laws/conventions in force to limit the peak volume of commercials, but advertisers subvert this by using dynamic compression to keep all the levels close to peak, increasing perceived volume.
Similar technique happens with music to compete for attention on the radio (Payola has turned radio airplay into just another paid for advertisement):

And what's sad is that advertisers completely fail to realise is the bad advertising is counter-productive. A product sold with an ad that makes me laugh, smile or which I enjoy might make me consider purchasing (if it's within the range of things I purchase). An ad which pisses me off is extremely likely to make me feel very negative towards not only the ad, but the product. I am less likely to purchase.
That's not good advertising: I may know the product name, but if I know it as "Something to be avoided at all costs" it doesn't drive sales.

i like the clever tricks used to make people remember their products. Apple is a marketing monster and if they weren't they'd still be peddling mac's to a small group of elite's who have been using it since the early 90's. Sonic branding and all those subtle things.
there was a supermarket in spain where i lived that had this song play over n over, no words just music but it was very clever because it makes you want to move faster.
Edit:
also i remember that a tv manufacturer came up with a tv that can detect sexual scenes and replace it with cartoon images hahah.
Flippin' Sheila and her Wheels - I really don't care! I literally dive to the remote control - the tv or the power socket if that advert comes on, whichever is closer! I can't stand it. Probably because it just gets into my head and that's me fully brainwashed for the whole night.
My tv is fairly good at lowering the volume during adverts - well, only on certain channels! Some channels seem to sneak past its filtering, other are nicely 'normal' volume level when an ad comes on - very good for those shouty ones!
I definitely highly recommend recording programs and then watching them a little later - it is amazing how much time you actually save! From what I hear, TV adverts in America are horrible - as in every few minutes in some cases (I'm hopefully exagerating here) - but Britain is starting to catch up I think - it can get very annoying.
I would definitely welcome anything to get rid of adverts! Or make them shut up at least!
