I've just cancelled my order for the N900. I thought I would tell you why:
1) I'm worried that my 40+ year old eyes won't cope well with browsing on the N900 screen. I already have trouble with my N800.
2) I don't really need a mobile phone. Still don't have one after all these years. If I did want a phone then I'd probably go more for a Nexus One - I like the look of those Google Apps (which will never come to the N900.)
3) I've been only slightly worried by the tales of hw & sw doom hereabouts. Remember, I have an N800 already, so I know what to expect from Maemo, for good or bad.
4) The N800 is still capable of doing most of what I would have done with the N900 - albeit a bit more slowly and clunkily - but at least readably.
5) Got bored of waiting. Ordered at the start of October, ETA here now end of Jan.

I might revisit Maemo if and when the tablet version arrives. Until then, enjoy your toys people! :)

remember its not just the size- its also the res, the n900 compares favourably with the hd2(massive screen but lower pixles)

My nearly 50 year old eyes can see the screen just fine. It's a very clear screen :D

:) Heheh, I'm not (yet) worrying about being able to see the screen, just about being able to read the text on the screen. Without zooming.

Adequacy of my N800 and shrinking of screen (with respect to text) are biggest reasons why I decided not to get the N900. Maybe I'll soon be saying goodbye here, too, and seeing you in the afterlife. :) (Especially if Reggie does not soon make New Posts filterable by category -- see my signature.)

Well my eyes are 60+ (but not by much!) and I could *just* read the text on the BBC home page, for example. I have now chosen 'large' for the text size and it's clear (*too* big in some places like Google results).

I seem to remember that some sites override browser settings for things like text size but I haven't been using it with the new settings for long enough to know.

Well,do yourself a favour and get some reading glasses. You will need them sooner rather than later in any case :)

Othervise I agree. The N900 screen is too small with respect to the pixel count. It is a waste of recources, similar to HD TV, that in normal viewing distance has a resolution much larger than the human eye can detect (except when playing computer games, which I never do). The screen size of the N800 is a much better compromize,

But a N800 with no phone? I would certainly get a Nokia E72 or E52, best phones out there right now, got everything, and hooks (semi) automatically straight up to your N800 for mobile internet access via BT.

Wait till your eyes get to be 50+ :(

If you do decide to get a phone, I'd check out the just announced Dell phone (currently going by the name of "Streak"). It's an Android phone with a five inch screen that actually looks usable to my old eyes.

You hear me Nokia - FIVE INCHES. That's what I want the N910 to be!

I'm well past my sell-by date and have fairly nasty eyesight problems. But I have no problems with the n900. In fact, I have more trouble with the laptop screen than n900. I wouldn't use that alone as a reason not to buy: go try one out in a store and see for yourself.

Unfortunately, I'd have to leave the country to do that. :-)
