I've been wondering that myself too. There's no more than 10 themes at most and they all basically suck. Fortunately the original Nseries theme is great.

Comments like that really make me and the other theme designers keep doing our work.

Theme on Maemo is not very simple and not many people do it yet. In time people will start doing more. Right now I know of only 2 themes in either extras or extras-testing

Alot of what Ovi store has is really just background packs called themes.

imho the maemo.org theme is quite good. There are still some little issues with the calender widget, the fonts in some areas and the code input after a reboot. But all in all it is really nice. The reflect theme isn't to bad too. And if we will wait a little bit there will be a.lot of other nice themes.

you can download all the wallpaper packs from www.n900wallpapers.com (http://www.n900wallpapers.com)
click on the loopable ones and under the image there are two buttons(actually three, but the third one SYNC is for the n900 ovi app), one says save wallpapers and the other says .desktop. click and download all of those on your n900 and it will give you all the desktop wallpapers.

There are some themes in extras-devel, like bossateal theme, maemo.org theme or reflect theme.
Nice wallpapers can be found on http://n900wallpapers.com. (I have not tried them yet, got just the link)

Forgive my ignorant curiousity, but why are themes in extras-devel? They can't be unstable (can they???) Are they still being tweaked? Or is that just the procedure before they go up the ladder?

I second the maemo.org theme. It looks absolutely fantastic!

Maybe not unstable, but can easily cause usability issues e.g. too large/small font, similiar foreground/backgound colors, undesired effect on UI widgets, etc.
Plus, they are contained in a deb package which run scripts as root on the device. For example, you wouldn't want me to be able to upload a theme to extras without testing that has "rm -rf" in the postinst script :) (not that I would, obviously!)

Yeah.. it's usually just a good idea to run all packages through a testing process before allowing everyone to install it. Jumping straight to extras could.. well.. really make t.m.o. an interesting place for a while.. :D

Ah, ok. I'm just an ignorant n900b. I was a bit mystified about what could be 'unstable' about the theme. I take the point about usability, and if they're not compiled into an instalation packeage, then that makes perfect sens.
Thanks for the explanation: You may now return to your regularly scheduled thread. :)
(Though I still want to see that maemo.org theme...)

I absolutely love the maemo theme as well.
And I'd like to make themes too. I don't know much about codes and programming but if there's one thing that I'd like to know first and contribute to fellow maemo users is n900 themes.

Is it possible that someone could re-create the stock theme so instead of blue, it is red. Black and red work really well together. I think it would look great. I imagine it needs a simple overlay in PS - But still new to the device, I don't want to run before I can walk.

Just be patient. It has some minor bugs that need to be fixed.
Then I will provide a deb file.

I would like this too. Right now I'm using the maemo.org theme with another background. But the original Nseries theme is beautiful, and a red one would be sweet.
from n900wallpapers.com i downloaded 4 wallpapers and the respective .desktop-file to use it as a panorama-wallpaper on all 4 desktops.
when i go to "change wallpaper" and click "add" to add a new 4series-wallpaper, i dont get to see the .desktop-file on the location i saved it at!
i created a folder named "wallpaper" where i saved all 4 single wallpapers plus its .dekstop-file, but the .desktop-file is not showing up.
how do i add all 4 wallpapers as a single panorama-wallpaper without having to assign them one by one to each desktop?

.desktop is hidden. Try enabling hidden files on your computer then drag all the files(.desktop + wallpapers) on your N900 images folder.
ok i found the solution.
the problen was that i saved the .desktop+wallpaper-files in a seperate folder.
i went "up" one folder (which is the normal wallpaper-folder of the n900 where it has all other wallpapers saved by default) and put everything in there. now its working.
