ldap contacts integration

When i got the n900 i was disappointed that there was no ldap support for contacts. but not suprised.
I've uploaded openldap to garage and it works fine (optified)
now i need to get cracking on integrating ldap into contacts, can anyone suggest a simple way to wrap my head around the contacts api (example app etc)
Id appreciate any tips and ideas as whilst im an old timer with regards to maemo, this is my first attempt at development on maemo

As I understood, contacts are kept in Evolution database. I wonder if there is a way to export or synchronise them with external LDAP database. I would be really cool, I could send contacts to my Snmo360 desk phone... is that feasible?
