PREVIEW OF INTRO MOVIE: MATRIX.AVI (http://share.ovi.com/media/Lacedaemon.Album1/Lacedaemon.10001)
1) Download default.conf (http://www.mediafire.com/?f0jmzuunmok) (I edited it so you save time)
2) Connect to your N900 via SSH(search if you don't know how to do that)
3) Once connected, paste the default.conf you downloaded from step 1 to /etc/hildon-welcome.d/ and overwrite the current one
4) To install the intro movie you need to transfer the video file (http://www.mediafire.com/?x03raazqwqa) to /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
5) Reboot your device and enjoy
OR
1) Download default.conf (http://www.mediafire.com/?f0jmzuunmok) and matrix.avi (http://www.mediafire.com/?x03raazqwqa)
2) Add these files on N900 Documents folder
3) Open Xterm and type:
sudo gainroot
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/matrix.avi /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
\\== Boot Video Installation ==//
If you want to revert back to the default nokia boot video(Hands-v32-h264.avi) copy this default.conf (http://www.mediafire.com/?duzyyyunbdk)
to your N900 Documents folder, open xterm and type:
sudo gainroot
mv home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcom.d/

Downloaded the deb package and installed.
It wrote about omitting some directories, but it works nicely.
Looks great. Thank you.

Ok, here is a new lock screen for the Matrix theme.
To install the new lock screen all you need to do is install the theme(read first post) and then move the 3 pngs attached on this post(Matrix_lock_screen.zip) to:
/usr/share/themes/matrix/images
and overwrite the current ones.

Nice one! Black and green are the natural colors for many of us :)
I don't like the blue highlight for the large buttons (music player main screen, application manager), green would be more consistent?

You mean, after replacing the images with the new lockslider?
Or after installing the theme.
Edit: I will re-upload the .deb file with the new lock screen included soon.
hopbeat

Both, as the files in lock screen you have provided are Right, Left, Thumb, the error is about ThumbPortrait, Bottom, Top :)

01-09-2010, 12:35 PM
Okay, I am not really sure why these errors appear, but some images also don't change when building the deb file.
I suggest you downloading the theme folder instead from the first post or from the link below.
New download mirror:
Matrix theme (http://www.mediafire.com/?imznemumgyj) (not deb)
Made a few changes:
Progress bars are now green
Media player icons are now green
New lockscreen included
Darker icons
About the blue button when pressing icons on Media Player/App Manager:
Seems like a bug or an option on gtkrc , since I have changed every image to green. It works correct on Clock though.

I am trying to find the source images/code for the Conversations application with no luck.
If anyone knows about it let me know so I can fix this bug.
EDIT: I have found out that the issue lies on the gtk/css files. Will update with a fixed version for the Conversations application later today.

I noticed that when overwriting via SSH some of the images don't always overwrite so you need to transfer them again. Could you confirm that the image on /usr/themes/matrix/multimedia/Button.png is green? On mine, it is.

Try copying over the matrix folder on your /usr/share/themes folder again and overwrite the current one to see if that fixes it.
Sometimes images don't get replaced/refreshed.

Once you´ve set the matrix theme, reboot your phone. After the reboot you will notice that the lock screen has changed to the matrix themes lock screen.
I just installed the matrix theme, set it as my theme and found the lockscreen to still be the original.... bounced the phone and up came the correct lockscreen :)
Who says reboots aren´t the fix for everything? :D
BTW - Fantastic Theme!!!! Love it to bits :)

Looks likes a nice theme :)
I've transfered the files to the /usr/share/themes, rebooted, but I can't seem to find it in the listed themes (when configuring desktop and selecting "themes").
Is there something I'm missing?
Copied, reboot, switched to different theme and switched backed, made some voodoo... Still, sliders and many highlights are blue.
Copy, Set theme, Reboot (if necessary)
You must reboot after the matrix theme has already been set as your phone theme...
Otherwise try the method before and recopy the folder overwriting the existing matrix folder in /usr/share/themes

I've found a bug with the theme. To replicate: start the phone app then push the power button twice to lock the phone. After the phone is locked push the power button again to get to the swipe screen. The swipe screen won't have a visible swiper.

I will try to fix these strange bugs today.
When the theme is fixed I will also make a deb or tar file.
Cheers.

Works nicely.
I can confirm the bug of missing slider when lock activated in portrait mode. I get again
/etc/hildon/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:2501: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "../images/LockSliderTop.png"
/etc/hildon/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:2503: Background image options specified without filename
/etc/hildon/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:2508: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "../images/LockSliderBottom.png"
/etc/hildon/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:2510: Background image options specified without filename
/etc/hildon/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:2515: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "../images/LockSliderThumbPortrait.png"
/etc/hildon/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:2516: Background image options specified without filename
Which probably is responsible for this bug.

@Lacedaemon, it's not about the archive, the problem is that the theme is in /usr/share/themes (that is part of rootfs). My question is more general I guess, do ween all those heavy pictures in rootfs?
Lacedaemon
01-10-2010, 05:56 PM
Yeah, I see. But default themes are also installed there. It could be handy though to move the images elsewhere
but that would require changing the image paths on the theme's config files etc. Not sure if that would work though.
Also, when I installed this theme as a deb, the size was 3mb. Just for your information.

Yes you can optify themes.
Flandry
01-10-2010, 07:23 PM
It may be the optify utility could do it. I haven't used it myself, but if it just moves everything in root in a deb and creates links then you should be good with that.
3+MB is certainly not an acceptable addition to rootfs for one theme. That said, i'd like to see this go into extras because it's a cool theme. Feel free to message me Lacedaemon if you have questions/problems setting up the deb to be optified. I'm getting so i can do it in my sleep. :D

It's probably best to start from a working .deb package and go from there.
I haven't worked on themes at all but in principle they shouldn't be different from an app installation. You can either put the bigger files into /opt somewhere in the install and then symlink to them in postinst or maybe links, or you can (in some cases) place the whole tree in /opt/maemo/ as if it was in / and it will work...not sure if that second approach will work with themes, though.
So you either move/link the bigger files in the install and postinst portion of your debian package scripts, or run the http://maemo.org/packages/view/maemo-optify/ utility over it. I've not used the utility, but many people have and i assume it works fairly well.

Umm, that doesn't say how to upload a theme to a repository.
It's about installing the theme on the device.
ahh sry, i thought that you need instruction howto install theme :P my bad
Flandry

Sorry, is it creating the deb package for the theme that you need to know or just how to optify it once completed?
Lacedaemon
01-11-2010, 12:47 PM
Both.
I just made a proper deb file out of theme maker, BUT the new Application Icons(from the new firmware) are still blue although I have added the green ones on the correct folder.
So, ThemeMaker needs an update, or I need to build the deb manually.
I am trying to build it manually through the device, hope it works.

Worst case scenario then is you fix the deb that ThemeMaker produces. You have to upload the source package to the autobuilder to get it built, anyway, so if ThemeMaker just spits out a .deb you have to extract it and modify it and upload that.
We can take this to private messages, IM, or IRC if you like. Please explain what you have now and we can go from there.

Yeah, I made a similar/simpler one with Adobe Flash. If someone that is more skilled with animation wanna do a better intro be my guest.
Preview file of the Matrix intro I made can be viewed here (http://share.ovi.com/media/Lacedaemon.Album1/Lacedaemon.10001).
//== Boot Video Installation ==\\
\\== Boot Video Installation ==//
I managed to add the opening video using Terminal rather than SSH.
I copied the relevant files to an easily accessible location and then used the mv command.
(Please only do this at your own risk, I will not be to blame for any bricked devices!)
eg.
to backup the original file,
cp /etc/hildon-welcome.d/*.conf /home/user/MyDocs/
then to put in the video file (any way to optify this?)
mv /home/user/MyDocs/Matrix/media/*.avi /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
and to copy over the file that tells the phone which movie to play:
mv /home/user/MyDocs/Matrix/conf/*.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
Nice work on the video.

Nice idea, will also add this installation method on first post.
Did you like the matrix boot video?
It seems that there is a glitch(green line appearing on the bottom) although that doesn't appear
when playing the video locally, only happens when the device boots.
Edit: If anyone has any idea about optifying the video let me know.
Flandry
01-14-2010, 05:36 PM
You can optify it by putting it in /opt/ and making a symlink. It's pretty straightforward.
copy movie file to /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln -s /opt/(name of video file) (name of video file)
ls -l
check to make sure you see the link in the listing
example
ln -s /opt/matrix.avi matrix.avi
Be careful not to delete the movie file in opt. I don't know what happens if it fails to find a boot video... hopefully nothing at all, but i don't want to test.
Nice idea, will also add this installation method on first post.

Yeah I liked it. As I don't really like to reboot often, I can't remember the green line now, but it looked great :)
MAemoTRIX indeed, though I'm sure many will prefer just MATRIX.
I'm not sure if it's possible to optify this but it would be nice, or we could end up with lots of boot videos for different themes if people start making them. There is also the shutdown video that goes to "NOKIA" but I'm ok with it as it is.
I probably should have put mv instead of cp for the original default.conf but it's easy to make a new one with notepad on a PC and just edit the one you made to use the name of the original file.
Edit: Thanks to Flandry for showing me how to make a simlink to the video. I'll try it after dinner :)
What would be great is if there was a package that could do all this via the App Installer for everyone, once it's gone through testing. It seems fine for me so far. All themes I've tried (including from Ovi Store) seem to mess up the Ovi widget on the desktop.

Video is great! But i think it can be a little bit better by tightening the delays to shorten it a bit to a length somewhere between 3 and 5 secs.
(also can the falling lines be desynced a little ? :P)

Don't forget:
sudo gainroot
You're not actually replacing the video, just changing the filename that is being called.

Desynced as in falling lines are not falling at the same speed as the one around them... That would mean cutting the image in vertical slice i guess with random speed !

Is it possible to put in a prompt? If so, that's the perfect way to do it, otherwise we'll end up with 2 deb files. One for the main theme and one for the startup video. Is there also a way that if it gets uninstalled, that it resets the video?

I'm typing in exactly what the OP say's to do in Xterm for the startup video and everytime I do, I get a "No media found."
Not even gonna mess with SSH, as when you do a search it's not like a post just pops up saying "do this or do that."

Update: Am I total Noob?? Yes, yes I am. The startup vid plays but only after it acts like it's showing the Nokia startup first, then does a little thing, then shows the vid.

You mean the Nokia logo, then loader(dots), then boot video? that's normal.
About your second question, to see these folders directly from your phone open the browser and type: file:///
On the computer the other hand, you can view/edit them via SSH software(e.g winscp for windows/cyberduck for mac)
Stay away if you do not know what you are doing.

@lacedaemon:
I have one idea:
in the video, when all the symbols/letters are falling down, why you don't make them fall a little longer and with some tricks let appear MAEMO with those symbols?
something like this

You should be able to replace the video with any of your choice. I wonder if a .mp4 video will work ? You could strip out the music from the one you linked to, and shorten it if you want to.

01-17-2010, 09:05 PM

nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 09:11 PM
If you do you probably have to step back on page 1 and reload the file default.conf (bottom of the first post - If you want to revert back to the default nokia boot video(Hands-v32-h264.avi) copy this default.conf)
also if you would like to check if the video is there do this on terminal
sudo
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media
ls
after typing ls you should see the files inside that folder and you should have:
Hands-v32-h264.avi
matrix.avi
if is correct replacing that file should be enough, if you have the video "hands" twice you have to remove one.
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:13 PM
ok if i find 2 files somewhere for example in that folder how can i delete it?
nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 09:16 PM
the command is rm.
I'm a noob too, I'm starting now with Linux so...
I think will be
rm Hands-v32-h264.avi
but I don't think is possible to have the same file twice (with the same name) in the same folder....
just restore the file default.conf for now.
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:19 PM

01-17-2010, 09:23 PM
You can put 100 copies of that video on your phone, it doesn't matter.
The file default.conf pick the one that have to play when your phone is switched on, as long as that one is all right you should be fine.
you can browse all the folders with cd
for Example:
cd /usr -> you are in the /usr folder
with
ls
you can see the files inside.
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:29 PM
but maybe i have something like 2 default.conf 's files, like default.conf, and default_1.conf. or cannt it be possible? i just need to check the folders that have the conf's files not the avi ones
nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 09:30 PM
ok, for check the configuration file you have to do this:
sudo
cd /etc/hildon-welcome.d
ls
you should have only
default.conf
Let me know
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:35 PM
i think i found the error, i have a folder named "hildon" only and i have in one file named "welcome", i think that was the second conf file,
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:36 PM
and i have into hildon-welcome.d folder another "file" called "media, maybe are one of those.
nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 09:37 PM
where is the folder "hildon"? is inside "hildon-welcome.d"?
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:37 PM
because i made cd to them and cannt go in, so they are files not folders. In the folder hildon-welcome.d, i have default.conf, and another called media but cannt go in
nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 09:40 PM
I don't have that media file/folder...
But if you run ls inside cd /etc you can find one hildon file/folder
did you try to replace the file default.conf?
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 09:42 PM
yes and when i replace i can change the first video and not the second one, the second one still hans on, so you have that hildon folder? what you have inside that cd etc/hildon? have you theme and welcome or just "theme"? i need to know if i will delete only the one inside hildon.welcome.d that is "media" only or the other into etc/hildon called "welcome" also?
nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 09:51 PM
inside etc/hildon I have only theme
Before deleting any files you better try and move it to /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/
joseilopezn
01-17-2010, 10:01 PM
how to move them to documents?
nicorumiz
01-17-2010, 10:12 PM
I think what you have to do is:
mv /etc/hildon/welcome.conf /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/
I'm not sure about the extension of the file "welcome"
when that is done try to browse your folder Documents from the file manager on you phone, you should be able to see the file welcome there.
If you don see it mean that something went wrong.
joseilopezn

Hi, I found some bugs, I didnt read the whole thread, maybe someone already mentioned them before, but... here they are:
The OVI icon is nowhere when u add the OVI widget....
When using Pidgin, there is a "white" bar (shown with red arrows) just above the empty place where you can type... just a bit annoying :(
Also, selected tabs will have a "green" top (shown with blue arrow), I think you can remove that... It will be nicer..
See the screenshots for your self what I mean :)
Hope those will get fixed! :D

that what i did but the code is not working
if you enter in the terminal:
ls /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media
You should see two videos the Hands-v32-h264.avi and matrix.avi
Now, if you installed leafpad and root you can type:
root
leafpad /etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf
There is:
[hildon-welcome]
filename=matrix.avi
change matrix.avi for Hands-v32-h264.avi

You should really read carefully the first post from Lacedaemon. If you download it in the Documents of the n900 (not the memory card) and type *exactly* his code.. it will work for sure only if you installed rootsh.

Yeah unfortunately that is my fault(or Macintosh's fault).

2) Open xterm and type(you need rootsh for this):

Nvm, I just look for how to install it,
My friend you should add the correct command for the x-terminal since noobs like me can get a head ache and confusion i just install it by useing
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/matrix.deb
Your missing the /home/user Part
Paranoxe
01-25-2010, 12:46 AM
When you open the terminal you are suppose to be already in /home/user
You can check that by typing pwd in the terminal.
a good trick when you enter a path is by touching the 'Tab' button on the screen (between the 'Ctrl' and 'Esc' button on the screen) before completing the path. It will fill automaticaly the name of your path.
e.g. by typing cd /h and then pressing 'Tab' on the screen, it will write for you cd /home if there is nothing else that starts with h.
This is quicker and you know that the directory exists at the same time!

No matter what I do, the boot video (any boot video, really) is gone. I've ssh:d, and copied the .conf file to correct folder, I've copied the matrix video to the right location (eventually even to /etc/hildon-welcome.d/media/ where the Nokia boot video was located when I started the operation. Nothing helps, and I don't get any boot video at all. Does anybody know what's wrong?

I found why. Because from my N900 the link where this file is hosted (mediashare) disconnects frequently due to poor signal and/or ads opened on mediashare site.
I installed by going to app mgr -> downloads -> desktop -> matrix...

Good concept but way too color full and too many animations which makes it look less professional. If you stick with one type of font, color and animation that will make it look even better.

I just found out that the color highlight of a selected SMS is blue.
I dont' know if this is a bug or a feature but I prefer green everywhere in the matrix theme.
So i changed
.MessagingBubbleClickedBackgroundColor {
background-color: #37b4fc;
}
in
.MessagingBubbleClickedBackgroundColor {
background-color: #68e000;
}
in css/colors.css. Now after a reboot the highlight color is green.

Since some people deslike boot sounds, you can edit the avi and add any sound you want.
Hi!
Thanks for the great-looking theme! I just love the way the background image works as you flick between desktops and the way text turns green when it is selected.
But say, would you be interested in making a darker theme? The backgrounds of buttons are a bit light in my opinion. How about making them almost all-black and any lettering on the buttons could be the cool cyber-green that's in wide use in the theme. I think now backgrounds and buttons are gray and I would like to see them black(er). I think just generally the boxes and buttons would fit in to the rest of the theme a little nicer, were they just a little darker. What do you think?
Also, the screen where you enter the PIN appears in somekind of a window. Maybe the window frame should be darker or dissolved into the black background all together? Looks more like an error prompt to me. Could it be my language setting (finnish)? I don't receive any errors, though to be clear.
I imagine it's really hard to pull off while maintaining this stylish look, but would be nice if you would play around with some of the key theme elements from Matrix. For example the red and blue pill or perhaps a white rabbit as an easter egg of some sort. For example, the button to say "OK" to continue after entering PIN could be the red pill and some button marking the exit could be either the blue pill or the white rabbit.
Or just keep it as it is: the best theme for the N900 at the moment.

You probably don't have rootsh installed since it says "Enable RD mode if you want to break your device", so you need to install it from application manager first. And also your mv command is wrong but someone already mentioned that.

Lacedaemon, how did you do the Matrix-bootscreen? It looks awesome, but I'd like to get that tweaked a lil, changing what is written down there and maybe prolonging it a lil if it needs that.
If you could tell me the app I could try making it by myself or, if you are up to change it I'd appreciate it if you could tweak it to the followings (Every line would be a new screen with $MATRIX being the 'falling matrixchars'):
Welcome to keynet

As for chaning the boot video, you need only to download 'Bootscreen' that allows you to put any video you want as the boot video.
