OMG - change to the above'ish
The link on the desktop doesnt work.... but......
On your PC - visit and login to the ovi store.
Then visit this site on your browser - https://store.ovi.com/account/settings/set-device?terminalId=N900&fragment=1 (https://store.ovi.com/account/settings/set-device?terminalId=N900&fragment=1)
Send the application link to your mobile
The mobile link now works! - just installed angry birds!
So allthough it is open for some, you should all be able to use the back door :)

Yup, the higher compression rate of the rootfs will only show up after actually writing files to the filesystem. All other files are still using the old compression rate. So free space will gradually grow with time. :)

Angry Birds is done by Rovio that made Bounce for Maemo 5 and makes games for many others platforms(i believe mainly for iphone lately).

Err.. actually they're about the same (as long as you are talking about the 3GS). The 3GS technically has a better processor and GPU but Apple underclocked them both. The GPU as a result in the 3GS is weaker than the N900's due to the underclocking.

Because the original plan was that the devices would be out in October, and this update and the store would be just before Christmas. The whole timetable slipped by about 3 weeks. When you think aout it, 3 weeks slippage in a project this big is pretty good!
Most of the items were reviewed by various people before release.

At last the store is open.
Just downloaded the Egg Timer.....why? Because I like eggs.
Problem: everyone knows a medium sized egg takes 3.5 minutes to boil so how come the timer can only handle increments of 1 minute?
That's a bit of a shame. Otherwise I like the graphics and the concept.

just wondering are all the apps etc on the ovi website usuable on the N900? for example the Playlist DJ app...it says its for N97/5800 etc but no mention of N900.
Does this mean its' not compatible then? Sounds like a cool app.

Where to complain about apps other than the reviews?
Solitaire uses around 55%cpu + Xorg 25% when minimized. Play part of a game, move away from it, forget about it (or just saving to finish later) and find your battery draining quickly.

Pretty underwhelming really though.

It does not work anywhere through shortcuts, not sure why but we are all accessing it via direct link through google. Good enough for me at the moment.

It does - on your pc click the 'where's my phone'. n900 is third row from the bottom, in the middle.
Use the browser in the device to choose what you want, d/l and the app manager will install.

'Manage approximately 20 sensors to collect information about the user’s location, ambient audio environment, running applications, accelerometer state, and so forth'
Thats certainly not your usual app. Sounds incredibly intriguing, although hopefully wont be lost in an avalanche of platforming penguins and social networking!
It's collating the available sensory input: is the user fidgeting and pacing? Is he/she rocking? Has he/she sat still for too long? Is the noise level too high/low? Is the user being shouted at?
With a light sensor (like the n900 has) you could monitor light levels - is the user skulking in a darkened room? In a bright, fast-moving environment like a busy supermarket?
For the sensory disregulated individual, these things can mean the difference between coping, curling up in a little ball or self harming. A device that could detect the sorts of environments and offer coping strategies could teach people how to manage their own stress. (A dialogue box says "There's a lot of noise: suggest you put your noise reducing headphone on" and the device plays soft music - then opens something like the snowglobe or liqflow) Eventually the user learns to recognise for themselves environments that are stressful and find ways of lowering the stress.
Luke Valentine
01-11-2010, 05:58 PM
The idea behind it is fantastic, but I cant help but feel that if it's under developed, it could cause more harm then good.
At a very basic level, yes, perhaps it will be able to distinguish between 'calming' environments and 'stressful' one. However, there are far too many variables then what the phone will be able to keep track of.
is the user sulking in a dark room? Is he or she self harming? Or are they simply lying on their bed in a dark room for relaxation? A bright, fast moving environment could be a car ride, a super market, a fair ground, a night club.
Will the choices of the app become obtrusive to a user? The changing of music when not asked for or required, the suggestions beebing through like texts? Does the app have to be 'on' or will it work in the background?
Im sure in time answers, and indeed a more focused direction will come, but for now, whilst it remains thoroughly intriguing, it sounds more like an unattainable pipe dream.

Can someone please post the Application Manager catalogue info so I don't have to get a Nokia Account to download apps?
Or does the catalogue hide / obfuscate the apps so you have to go to the Ovi store?
EDIT: Bundyo nudged me in the right direction and after hunting a bit I've found this post:
Ovi added a new repository when I clicked on download and the rpository is:
https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/fremantle/ovi/
distribution ./
catalog name Ovi

Catalogue name: Ovi
Web Address: https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/fremantle/ovi
Distribution: ./
I'm not sure you'll see them in App manager, use apt-cache to search for birds and offscr.
just type on ur browser http://store.ovi.com (its Ovi beta). Dont use link thats on ur mobile its still give u "coming soon". And when u click to download any application its automatically going to open ur App.Manager and will create link in ur Application catalogs folder to Ovi just like any other out there (nokia system, maemo, extra,..etc) and then proceed to download app.
Some nice little fun apps in there by offscr mostly. Couple of themes too (Harmony BlkWhite, Alpine).
I like the way you can browse the store on the web and have it send an sms to your phone with a direct link to an app you want. Then on the phone you can to click on it, login (leave a browser open so the cookie remains for the next one), then download, then wait for app manager to install it.
Frankly I realized this would take a while to check out all the 10+ apps I wanted to, so I ended up doing the following (in case anyone is interested)
1) using Modify Headers extension in Firefox on desktop changed my User-Agent to the N900 one (found easily on various sites)
2) Use that to make ovi store think my desktop is a N900, so it gave me the Download link
3) Downloaded all the .install files for all the apps still on the desktop, then opened them up in a text editor to get the package names
4) Finally pasted all of those in an root ssh session to the phone, in apt-get install <package1> <package2> <package3> etc
5) Took 2 minutes or so to download and install 10 apps including big themes.
I wonder if there's an easier way to select many apps for installation that I missed rather than go through all this.
Sidenote, rootfs is full again :(

You should be aware that apt-get stores the downloaded debs at (note, the application manager doesn't):
/var/cache/apt/archives/
It's safe to clean them after installation either by
rm /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
or (simply)
apt-get clean
This should free some space if you haven't done it already.

It appears that the games are optified, but not the libraries they depend on (according to another thread). Basically QT 4.5 is optified but some apps use QT 4.6 but that's not optified yet.

could it be you're on page 1 and need to click "next" (or whatever it says in your language)? the button is right below the last application, on the right side.
also, when you enter the store, they give you a list of recommendations. this list could be short in theory. (it's long for me.) click on one of the categories in the grey toolbar on top of the page (applications, games,...) to see the full selection.

using your n900 try:
Open menu and click 'Ovi' symbol

Open browser and enter http:// store.ovi.com/mobile
Using your pc go to

OK thank you very much RevdKathy for the link. UNFORTUNATELY it appears the geniuses at maemo/nokia have decided to not share but these 6 measly apps with those of us behind the Great Firewall (China). that is just awesome.
no ovi store or cool apps/games for me...
unless somehow i can get a proxy to work on the N900, which i still cant figure out how to do.

Who did loose rootfs space when installing stuff from ovi. did you also install themes? Because themes are on rootfs i believe.

Can't you just proxy via your computer and get them that way?
I know it's "mafan" but you live in China mate, best get used to it ;)

How weird. How you know that its because of Nokia? Would the very first hypothesis with yout firewall be that it's blocking and there should be rules on that great thing. If you had completely open system then there would probably be no problems.
I´m just bit amazed because of your attitude towards other people in the world to take your firewall into consideration. Or maybe I'm missing something.

You didn't get the birds either?
If you did, I can send you whatever you want from the free list - someone listed the whole catalogue here. PM me your number (I've deleted it) and wish-list tonight and I'll do them.
If you didn't even get the birds... then we will need to seriously Think about a solution.
Seems a bit silly for China to block Nokia. Apple, now, I could understand... ;)
I find the choice of for-pay desktop images to be quite telling for the Ovi Store. . . .
The content of the Ovi Store tells about the store, right. But in the first place it tells about the developers uploading products there and setting the price. The success or not@of such products also tell about the Maemo users.
Let's see how things settle.

Most likely it's not neither Nokia nor the Great Firewall of China. I don't really see any reason for either of those to block current content in Ovi Store, especially if the Wall allready lets the store itself trough.
Propably it's the developers of these Apps that have chosen, for whatever reason, not to release them in every market.
@slender: I guess it could be both. Nokia not wanted to promote the apps in China (maybe they are afraid of some kind of repercussions) or it could be the Great Firewall actively blocking all those apps for whatever reason. ps - i don't know what you're talking about when you say "my attitude against other people in the world" - I'm not Chinese. I may have accidentally pointed blame at a wrong entity (in this case Nokia/maemo) but it's not borne out of some kind of nationalistic pride.
@RevdKathy - I didnt even get the birdies :(
it looks like I need a proxy ON the N900. when I use a proxy (i have several apps on windows) and access the browser on my PC i see allllllll the goodies im missing out on! makes me wanna...leave china temporarily, download, and come back. I've dealt with the fact that i can't access facebook, twitter, or even youtube on the N900 but to do this! this is just unacceptable whether its coming from the firewall or from some kind of marketing thing on nokia/maemo's behalf.
is there any way to get a proxy up and running on the N900? i've searched but i havent found anything. and i dont know how to use openvpn (im assuming u use that WITH a paid service - i only use free proxies here)
or maybe there's a way to install these apps OFFLINE, and not OTA so that my IP address isnt even detected... doubt it.
I believe now is the most appropriate time for me to start a thread about getting (free vs paid) proxy/vpn on the N900. I need a how-to from all you experts out there.
Ofcourse, apt-get clean! See working with debian on a normal sized drive makes you forget about those little things :)
Still, like others said, perhaps a download queue or a multi-select + download function on the ovi store could be useful.
As a sidenote, it seems freed space on the rootfs now shows up immediately in a df. It previously needed a reboot for me most of the times.

I believe the reason may well be in Chinese legislation. I have heard some strange rumors about a new law in China that forbids importing games, or something to that effect (but I have not seen this in writing anywhere, so this information may be incorrect.) In any case, I am quite sure no developer would deliberately close out the Chinese market, and certainly Rovio would be more than happy to make Angry Birds available in every possible market.

这么麻烦啊! NO I can't get used to it? are you in Beijing now?? how are we going to get all these good apps? there needs to be a method to either get them transferred offline to the devices or to get a VPN/proxy on the devices themselves and hide IP from China Unicom.

Well the law definitely isn't new but you're right to some extent.
China examines all the games coming into the market and they have to be approved by the government (sometimes this is retroactive to enable smaller games to start off before they're checked). Also there is a limit on how many foreign movies they allow here every year, which could be a problem if OVI wants to sell movies...
there are also sometimes problems about which department should issue the permit, the latest wow update had this problem for instance.
So in conclusion: Yes there are a lot of barriers and things to consider when bringing a game to China.

;) I hope the sound files are high quality and stereo. I'd hate it if my N900 would do mono farts only.

Haha, yeah I'm here for another two days and then I'm heading south for 放假 (Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore), coming back by chinese new year though.
I think it should be possible to run a web-proxy on it but I don't know since I don't actually have the device (I'm alas still a poor student who cannot afford one yet), but I'm looking into solutions because this firewall is going nowhere and when I do get the money I'm buying one right away(although that may run maemo 6 if I stay here and work)!

I dont think these are all optified?
i installed solitare, and lost 7mb rootfs. deleted and it came back.
i installed angle meter (also by "offscr.com") and lost abot 7mb. deleting brought it back.
i installed both at same time expecting 14mb to go, but it was still only 7mb????
i tried reboots between installs and uninstalls, but no difference.
Angry birds didnt make any difference to rootfs at all.
any ideas? i dont want to use anything that will use rootfs space if i can

I think most of the apps are nice little demos on what is possible. Some of the themes are really beautiful. Best app is definitely Angry Birds :)

Offscreen apps (at least some) depend on Qt libs, which are not optified on current firmwares. That's likely not going to change until (at least) PR1.2 with Qt 4.6.
