Go to the dial keypad and hold down the 1 button. This is how it works on all the previous cell phones I have had.

Edit: I should add that this did not work last week, but works now on the N900 following this update

Nope.. didn't work for me... hold '1', '1' turn blue and turn back to grey....

Where you configure voicemail# for '1'?

The same shortcut I have on my desktop, prior to both updates, still works for accessing both of my voice mail accounts.

I just "added a Contact to desktop".

I am not talking about adding a 'shortcut'... but hold '1' button to do this. this is a normal feature in most modem cell phone nowaday. From PR1.1 release note, it told to be supported. How?

Your thread title says "shortcut". What you're describing now is a "speed dial", which I do not believe is supported. If "multiple function for long button press" is not supported, I doubt that you can get speed dial to work.

My bad...Dialpad -> hold down 1 key = speed dial for voice mail.

It does work. I was using "hard keys".

Ok. but if you refer to http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_5/PR1.1 a new feature is...
Phonecalls
Add voicemail shortcut support.
Showing call forwarding correctly when busy forwarding is not set.
Call log improved.

It seems to have 'speed dial' or 'shortcut' enabled for button 1. First reply confirmed ok, but I want to know how to configure it.

I'm looking for that too, but I think the n900 takes the info from the sim card, but if the cards has not the info the shortcut will not appears

Mine doesn't work, either. Maybe i's not on the sim, don't know and can't tell. (What good is this feature if you can't control which # it dials?)

Anyway, I have a Mr. Voicemail in my contacts and call him every now and then from a desktop shortcut.

I just started with T-Mobile last month, and the SIM card they sent me was first used with the 900. I have since had the card installed in both my Motorola Q and V365. I made no "speed dial" configurations for voice mail, following T-Mo SIM installation, though the Motorola phones have "1" configured for voice mail speed dial by default.

I currently have my AT&T SIM card in my 900, and previously made the "Voice Mail" contact and installed the shortcut (yellow colored balloon with tape reel icon) on my desktop. Again, no "speed" dial changes made, but the contact has both AT&T and T-Mobile voice mail access numbers in the file.

When pressing/holding 1 on the dial pad, it calls the "T-Mobile" access number, which is listed as the "2nd number" in the contact.

FWIW, the T-Mobile and AT&T access numbers (does not log me in automatically to T-Mo, as 900 has AT&T SIM installed currently) are precursored with "+1".

None of the other speed dial info shows in any of my other contacts...going to check raw *.csv and *.vcf data.

UPDATE on *.csv/*.vcf file...no speed dial info saved there, and none of my other speed dials work.

Still not sure why it defaults to the "2nd" number listed in my "Voice Mail" contact (T-Mobile)...esp. given that my AT&T SIM is installed now.

Did you "import contacts" into the 900 from your "old SIM"? Was this a method used for people who "do" have this working?

Maybe that is the common denominator?

On my O2 sim, if i hold one it goes to the voicemail. This is the only contact that's come with the simcard. If i look up the conact, there is no difference to the others, not sure how it works.

I've tried importing the contacts from SIM and still nothing (on O2 in the UK).

I have not managed to get this working.

This is a Nokia Retail N900 with a UK Vodafone Sim. Tried putting the SIM in my old phone and adding a SIM contact as Voicemail.

SIM back into N900, pressing does not work.

Then tried importing contacts from SIM card. Still no joy.

Not sure of any other combinations to try :(

I am not sure why this is highlighted in the changelog, but voicemail support in 1.1 is still incomplete.

In 1.1, the "1"-speedial only works if there is a voicemail contact stored on the sim-card's voicemailbox field. Not all sim-cards have such a field. If you have a voicemailbox contact with a special voicemailbox icon next to it in the contacts sim-card subview, then your sim-card has such a contact and it should have been automatically imported into contacts and the "1" speed-dialling should work.

If you dont have such a contact, or you remove the contact it wont work. Unfortunately you cannot in 1.1 manually add such a contact, it has to be imported from the sim-card. You can edit it however. If there is several numbers, then the "1"-shortcut should always use the first one listed.

Hope that clarifies it.

I managed to get Button 1 speed dial work.

I go to Contacts, view as status and then select Groups. I groups you could select the options to show the SIM Contacts.

There I have a contact named "Voice Mail" with a Record picture on right, I selected the contacted and I added in the Contact List.

After this pressing 1 more than one second calls me to the Voice Mail number.

My experience is opposite:

- I have my AT&T SIM in the 900 now.

- Press/hold 1, dials the T-Mobile (USA) voice mail "access number"

- The T-Mobile number is listed "last" in the contact (AT&T listed first)

- I imported "only" the AT&T SIM's contacts into the 900.

- The AT&T number is listed as the forwarding number, under >Settings >Phone

***** For the people who do "NOT" have it working, do you have a "Call forwarding" number active, and configured, under the "Phone settings"?

So it picks the last, not the first, ok. The voicemail number gets imported from the first sim-card which has one automatically, so that would explain why you have the t-mobile number there.

Call-forwarding has nothing to do with this.

Have you tried to simply edit the voicemail contact, sucht that you revert the order of the numbers or delete the wrong number?

Well again, I never imported the T-Mobile SIM's contacts to the phone..the T-Mo SIM was new when I got the phone. All my contacts came from existing AT&T SIM.

How does the "Call forwarding" setting, "under the phone settings", have nothing to do with it, when it establishes the voice mail system where your calls are forward?

i have Movistar Spain SIM

I think that if you don't have Voice Mail contact in the SIM and you could not import in the main list there would be no way to made speed dial 1 work.

Unless there's some hide configuration to edit that thing that I don't know.

I am in Hong Kong and using 'One2Free' (aka CSL).

SIM have a entry '-Voice Mail' (yes, with a hypen), but still have nothing.

Why Nokia make this so stupid? Can it be a simple speeddial for '1' which used to be happened for all phones in the world? Try to make N900 diff?

Well, with my Motorola Q, I believe there is a "registry" setting change when assigning "speed dails". Again, there is no field in the *.vcf nor *.csv file for speed dial in any of my contacts. I don't believe this is saved on the SIM, rather somewhere "on the phone".

Does anyone know where this may be held in Maemo (equivalent of user settings in registry for WinMo)?

I can edit both numbers in the "shortcut", and "contact", for the yellow balloned "voice mail" entry. If you're referring to the "speed dial entry", for the 1 key, or any other for that matter, you may be correct. Could this info be in a config/ini file?
