View Full Version : 800 Warning - add Feeds with caution

It seems adding feeds to the reader can brick your 800. I added a feed and my 800 went into a constant reboot loop (at least one other user describes the exact same problem). Sad for its first day

There is something seriously wrong going on. This shouldn't be possible to do with an average feed, given that I've added feeds that are identical to ones used on the 770 with this end result on the n800-- a constant reboot loop. I was able to recover by reflashing and then toggling R&D mode off and on, but it's still terrible to experience. It's now happened again after the first reboot since rebuilding it too! I note that one of the packages updated after doing a apt-get upgrade is busybox, so this may be the root of the problem.

This can't be right... adding an RSS feed shouldn't trash the device, if so that's a really *really* bad bug.

Have you reflashed to see if you can recover the N800 - not an ideal solution I know, but may help you get back up and running. In the meantime I'd suggest you log this as a bug in bugzilla - particularly if you can reproduce the reboot loop reliably.

does it still happen if you turn the rss applet off on the desktop?

Thanks for the feedback. Reflashing did get me back up and running. Im afraid to add any feeds though. At the time it went into the reboot loop, I was running the shipped firmware with no new apps installed. I did have the rss applet on.

Not sure what to think - scary adding a feed could be so damaging. I'll put in a bug report.

Thanks again.

Merely adding an RSS feed should ' NOT ' put your N800 into the endless reboot loops ( which eventually may result in a WSOD ) . Since your machine is almost brand spanking new, I suggest the you try to replicate this error and if it does replicate then you should put in a very high priority bug report. At the same time you should also send the N800 back to get it replaced by a new unit, if indeed you brick it by adding the RSS feed. This would indeed open Nokia's eyes and make them address the issue pretty quickly. To a layman like me, this seems to be some kind of HW issue.

I have also experianced issues with my RSS... the device will seemingly ramdonly reboot and when the device comes back to like all of my rss feeds have been disappeared...

Thinking of canning the device and reflashing it later this week, I was hoping that its a bug in the app setup I currently have inplace..

Lets see what happens after the rebuild...

My RSS reader crashes EVERY TIME I try to add http://planet.maemo.org/rss20.xml ... Of all things.

One of my feed's icon has taken over another and I keep unsubscribing, subscribing, clearing cache etc etc but it's still masking one feed with another's icon.

Hmm... Mine crashed when I added RSS feed from planet.plone.org. Could the be something in the feeds of the PlanetPlanet application? Never the less, feed reader shouln't crash the unit because of a bad feed. I still haven't been able to reflash my unit. I haven't tried put it into R&D mode and back yet. I'm wondering how is that going to help the reflashing?

I also contacted Nokia via their website. They instructed me to contact one of their authorized repair shops. There is one 2.5 km away from my place so that is also an option.

I recommend check you feed b4 you put it in the N800, try feedvalidator.org In any case, my N800 doesn't have that problem, but somehow I think there may be a resource leak, as the system start to crawl to its knee as I added more feed, w/ autoupdate off. And I eventually will have to reboot in order for the tablet to get back to speed again.

me too...

I've already signaled that !

SIMply can't add it without crashing.

IT's strange too that my 770 doesn't load since a couple of weeks...
is it the same for you ?

According to both http://feedvalidator.org and http://validator.w3.org/feed/, this feed doesn't validate (today, that is). Of course this is no reason for any device to quit work :) - Maybe N800 is too strict?

Do any of you guys know how to view feeds that you've chosen to "keep for later?"

Has anyone raised a bug? I can only see bug #943 (https://maemo.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=939) however this is 770 specific and doesn't mention the N800. Someone should also raise a bug for the reboot loop if that is reporducible. Unfortunately the Maemo Bugzilla is going through one of it's quiet period (aka ignored) stages at the moment (NOKIA: PAY SOME ATTENTION!!)

When I raised it, my N800 was still in travel :)
I think the file i attached could easily send a N800 in a reboot loop. Probably it's the watchdog that decides to reboot the device when it notices that the RSS feed reader doesn't start anymore trying to update the RSS applet.
I forgot to test it before let my wife to use HER N800, and now it could be rather difficult to test it and delete her data with a reflash.
Pro and cons of my last attempt, it was succesfull (no pain, no sorrow, I have my shiny new N800) but... her... she liked it a lot and it is ACTUALLY her device! I can only use it to surf or to hear music or to make same VOIP calls, NO HACKING ALLOWED :(

Good thing I sat this one out, maybe when all the bugs are fixed I'll get a n800

I had the same problem with the feeds at http://www.highways.gov.uk/traffic/11278.aspx. They fail to validate for a couple of reasons - no email address, and invalid guid. I was stuck in endless boot mode, until eventually I managed to snap it out of it (not quite sure how, it was late at night, but it involved lots of battery reinserting, and charger plugging). I've sent them an email telling them their feeds are invalid - will be interesting to see if they reply.

I prefer to use gregarius (http://gregarius.net/) which runs on my web server , this way I don`t read duplicate items either.

I've lost 2 N800s because of the feeds. I DID NOT add any other software. The first one when into the continuous reboot until I reflashed it. Then it went in to the "3 second start with Nokia screen and die" mode, which is what happened to the 2nd one. I'm debating on trying another one, given how much I love the device...

Just got off the phone with Nokia after my lastpost... They said my device was a Non-U.S. device. Thankfully, the store I bought it from is giving me my money back!

Seems to be a problem with IT2007 even on the 770 (Hacker's Edition). I added a feed last night and shortly thereafter the reboots started. It would get past the stupid hands image and then go to a white screen for a while, followed by a brief black screen and back to rebooting.

I tried turning off our wireless connection, but that didn't help. Nor did turning off the lifeguard (although seeing the device via USB and being able to run the flasher on it certainly cheered me up). Finally I had to reflash the whole system and start over, which means I lost all my apps and settings but the device is now working again as normal.

One thing I did not try was popping out the battery to reset it, since someone on the forums seemed to indicate that they though this caused their WSOD (and I don't want that!).
