View Full Version : protective plastic film [touchscreen] ???

I am using my 770 for a half year now and I noticed some scratches (especially in the "scrolling region") on the touchscreen. You can also see the a "scratch-sample" of the Battlegweled game ;)
These scratches are only visible when the touchscreen is black!
Now to my question:
Is someone using a protective plastic film for the touchscreen?
I ordered a N800 and don't want that the new touchscreen looks like my 770 one in a half year ;)
Does someone know the "Vikuiti ARMR200" protective plastic film from 3M?
This one seems to be very good!
I am gratefully for any reply!

The N800 comes with a protective plastic film and so I left that on.
Hopefully the scratches are only on that layer.

I don't think the factory fitted film is good enough, it became very scratched after a few days. Also, the silver tab for pulling it off is in the way. I peeled it off after a week and noticed that the screen is a lot harder than the film so I hope it won't scratch easily. At first the screen was a bit sticky because of the minimal residue but when I wiped it with my finger the stylus glides smoothly now.
Having said that, I am also thinking of a proper screen protector. When removing a protector (in the future) it is easy to scratch the screen and this defeats the object...

The LCD film that comes with the N800 should be considered temporary. I doubt it's up to the caliber of the films you can buy for serious use.

I used a protective film two years ago for my Symbian phone, but i wasn't really satisfied with the quality of it. The "rainbow-effect" of the film was very annoying!
But this "Vikuiti ARMR200" seems to be much better...
I will sleep a night over that (and order two of them tomorrow ;)).
The dimensions of the touchscreens should be the same for the 770 and the N800. Correct??? (so i could order two of the 770 film versions)

if you peel the tab off the opposite direction only the tab comes off and not the film
@ taxrat, (i can't seem to copy your posts with n800)
one thing, it's fitted perfectly; a lot have complained about the lack of one as it's near invisible.
It seems to be doing a pretty good job my end, although not so good under bright light as you can see added scratches.

On my 770, I am using the EXiM SPOC screen protector (made in Japan and super clear), and highly recommend them. The best place to buy them is from a distributer on Ebay.

 I am also using a protective Screen on my Nokia 770. I got this from a Radio Shack, the brand was Penguin or something , I think. Initially this screen was meant to be used with PSP. I had to cut off a tiny bit on the side to use it with the Nokia 770. Three or four days after I received the Nokia 770 ( in January 2006) I installed this Protective Screen. So far I have no complains. I am sure that the Nokia 770 Screen below the Protective Screen is in totally pristine condition.;)

I use Pelikan brand PSP screen overlays on both the 770's I have. I've never used them w/o the overlays so I can't comment on how they might interfere, I have not really noticed any difficulty in use. You do have to trim the overlay on the short side and it comes in a package of two with a cleaning cloth and a small squeegee for installation.

Hi,
I had some bad experience with the touchscreen on the Palm Lifedrive and when I purchased the 770 I fitted the Brando (BW UltraClear S/P(Nokia 770)) on the screen. Fits perfect.

I am totally amazed by the BoxWave ClearTouch Anti-Glare , $12.95 for the Nokia 770. The price is too high, but once I saw how fantastic it is, I don't mind the price anymore! It went on PERFECTLY on my very first attempt, not the slightest bubble or wrinkle. It's almost impossible to tell it's there, except for the fact that there's so much less glare on the screen now. The screen is still every bit as responsive to fingers and stylus as before. And yet the coating is nice and thick, it's definitely going to protect the screen well. There isn't any way this thing could be better unless it was cheaper. I ordered one for every phone and PDA in my family. (The one for the Treo 650 is on sale really cheap for a set of 3 right now, too!) Find them at www.boxwave.com

As an update, in response to this thread <http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4421> I have removed the PSP screen protectors from my units. Handwriting recognition is *very* much improved. It seems to me that overall screen based operation is improved as well, such as reaction to screen button clicks. That's probably just my mind playing tricks on me though because I have no benchmark as well. For now I'm leaving them off.

Peter

I used my 770 a half year without protection and now i am using this protective film from 3M (Vikuiti ARMR200). This film is made especially for touchscreen displays and so far i could not notice any bad behavior of the touchscreen (tested on my 770 and N800).
The film has a very good surface that makes the usage much better!
If someone is interested in protecting the touchscreen, i would recommend this Vikuiti protective film!

I ordered them online. So I don't know whether you can get them in a shop in Wiesbaden.
I would recommend http://www.schutzfolien24.de/
The films are a bit more expensive when you order only one of these, but you get 3 when you order 2 ;) so each film would cost around 6 EUR
(unfortunately i ordered mine from another shop...)

I bought these (http://screenguardz.stores.yahoo.net/nokia-n800.html). So far its pretty nice... what you would expect from a screen protector.. and just like the instructions said.. all the extra streaks and 90% of the tiny bubbles I couldn't get out were gone after a day

hilarious..until i read this thread i didn't even realize there was any kind of "protective" film on my n800..i must have peeled the little silver thing in the opposite direction..leaving the plastic film in place..after a couple of wks it seemed the tablet was scratched when it was just the film..well thats cool with me..it actually took some fingernail work to get it off..i just put it back on and plan to leave it in place

I tried a Brando protector (the slightly thicker removable washable things), and to me these don't seem suitable for the N800. It simply was impossible to get out the bubbles, actually it wasn't so much bubbles as a complete mess, the N800 screen seems to be too soft for these types of screen protectors - at least I see no way of applying them properly. I may try one of the thinner, adhesive types later.
The good news though is that although I thought I had got some scratches on my N800 already they all "disappeared" when I carefully cleaned the screen in preparation for the screen protector experiment. I first used an electrostatic brush to remove lint and dust, then dilluted warm soap water applied carefully with some cotton, no polishing, removed water with more cotton, followed by another round with the electrostatic brush. The screen looks as good as new.
