This thread is just for fun i guess. Be interesting to see what operating systems fellow Maemo users are running on their desktop/laptop computers.

I'll get things started:

I'm currently running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 and Windows 7 RC (just for games).

Laptop and desktop PC are both dual boot with GNU/Linux and Windows Vista.

The difference is the flavor of GNU/Linux: The laptop runs Ubuntu (Karmic), the desktop Gentoo.

I boot Windows every other month or so to install all the updates. - And, of course, I sometimes try Nokia software (such as Ovi Player), find it doesn't work or crashes my Windows, and leave it again.

Ubuntu Karmic on "couch surfing" laptop (this is probably the PC I spend most of my time on)

Win7 RC 64bit on gaming desktop (gonna upgrade to a retail license Win7 Ultimate - pricey but it's only $20 more than Pro to not have to reinstall everything...and it's my only "current" Windows PC so I can afford it)

Xubuntu Jaunty on file server / torrent box

Got a couple of XP VMs in VirtualBox - basically old computers that suffered hardware failures but have been converted to VMs  good for playing games that won't run on Win7.

Got an old 98SE notebook I use like a console for "retro gaming" and emulation

And I got another old desktop running Xubuntu Karmic that I have no space to actually set up :D

Oh office PC is XP SP3.

Family's PCs:

Sister's netbook: Ubuntu Jaunty
Mom's laptop : Ubuntu Karmic 64bit / Win7 Home 64bit (never used...came with it :-\) dual boot

Intrepid (8.10) was the best - then they started to ruin it.

I think it's mostly been improved, especially wireless networking, but the new Ubuntu Software Center is just the Idiocracy version of the old Add/Remove Software app. The old app is far faster and more convenient. The new one is good for people who can only hold one thought in their head at a time.

I boot debian 'Lenny' version of Linux via a USB stick (4gb) and persist changes to the ext2fs.

I also use a custom Slax version of Linux via a USB stick (1gb) too.

I was so obsessed with my N900 that I forgot about Lynx!

Anywho, I'm not willing to go around and mess with Alpha software anymore since school started up... Who knows what big project might be coming...

My Excuse:

"Sorry Mr. Professor, I.. uh... installed an alpha version of a linux operating system, and it had problems with my ATi graphics card. I can't get OpenOffice to work either. Could you give me an extension? Maybe next year?"

Ah... now back to writing an abstract letter...

I started using Maemo on n900, then EasyDebian and finally I tried Ubuntu on my PC, which I like a lot.
Now, I'm wondering which OS most of you are using on your computers. Are you typical Windows users? Or are there many Linux lovers? What about Mac OSX?

Been using Linux on desktop for about 10 years or so.

Have used Slackware, debian, read hat, mandrake and now settled with Ubuntu.

Upgrading to new versions of Linux does not mean I have to spend money on new PC or components unlike upgrading Windows.

Hardly ever have to boot into Windows now (only for work purposes) or run in virtual machine.

I did the same. I installed VmWare Player and Ubuntu in it. The process was very fast and everything started working very well.
Now I'm using Firefox on Ubuntu. Is it possible that it works faster than Firefox on Windows Vista?

Mac OSX Panther on my old Powerbook Pismo.

Debian Testing on my desktop.

Windows mobile 6.1 on my O2 XDA Flame.

Maemo 4 on both my Nokia N800 and N810.

And Maemo 5 on my N900.

Also using Linux exclusively for about 10 years, no dual-boot. I use Gentoo. It's great to finally have real linux in my phone. :)

Oh, also my TV (Philips) runs Linux and so does my wireless router (DD-WRT).

Before linux on my PC I would Dual-Boot between OS/2 (primary) and Win98 (games & few utils). Before OS/2 I used DOS, multitasking inside of DESQview. :D I've never been a full-time Windows user in my life.

How do I run Ovi Suite or other Windows software? I don't.

Windows 7. I do have a Mac in the house, they are okay but a few little things are missing that I like too much about Windows. Have always been told about Ubuntu in the past, seen it in action and it looked okay but I couldn't be bothered messing around learning it for weeks on end when I don't really use computers much in the first place.

We shall see what the future holds though...

I have Windows 7 and Snow Leopard dual-booting in this PC. I like the challenge of getting OS X to work on a PC, especially on this incompatible configuration -- currently, the only thing not working is the sleep/hibernate feature. On my laptop, it's Win7 and Jolicloud (a Linux OS for netbooks, kinda cool, and easy to install too).

I mostly use Windows for games and for stuff required for school (like, having to code in Visual Studio, etc.), but otherwise, I use OS X or Jolicloud.

Edit: I've just seen another [longer] thread similar to this. Maybe someone can merge these threads...

I used to run Windows via virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org/).

Created a 10Gb hd image , inserted win xp cdrom into cd then "booted" the virtual machine. Installed windows absolutely fine. Whenever I need windows just start virtualbox, boot the image and that's it!

I think there are 2 versions of virtualbox - the OSE version but with no usb and the "normal" version which does support USB.

Windows 7. Easily one of the best OS's ever. Its on my laptop and two of my desktops. If the n900 ran it I would use it exclusively.

I have Ubuntu installed on a home "server" and sometimes I'll VNC into it. I have KDE dual booted onto my laptop but I never use it.

Someday I want to get a macbook pro, but only to laugh at it and say I have mac "experience".

EDIT:

Meant to add that this summer I want to make my own linux desktop and learn each piece. Its my understanding that the kernel can be built with different "modules". So I'm going to look into learning what modules there are, what they do, and build my own kernel. Installing JUST a kernel gives you a terminal, right? Cuz I want to start barebones and install an XServer, then play around with different window managers and choose which one I like and basically build it from the ground up. I'm sure my disdain for linux will only be increased but I want to try this.

gentoo for the last few years.

Started with Linux in about 1994 with Slackware when it was installed from 6 floppies. Moved on after a few years to RedHat. When RH went commercial I moved to gentoo rather than Fedora, and never looked back.

My Eee still has Xandros but without the unionfs, however that'll be finally going to gentoo in a couple of weeks.

I run Win 2K in a VM for when I need to get compatible with a customer, but for very little else.

How do you run software like Ovi Suite or other Windows software? Are you using Windows on a virtual machine?

Who needs such software, when having a N900?

The cool thing is, that you can copy all files you need by scp.
Every update is done by apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

So no need for any Ovi Suite. And there is not much windows Software that cannot be replaced by Linux software.

I am a Linux user for 15 years now. And the last 6 exclusive Linux.

For any Linux noobs interested in giving it a serious look, I would recommend running Wubi if you're a Windows user. It is a Windows program. You run it from Windows & it sets you up to dual-boot to Ubuntu. You can even uninstall it from Windows if you don't like it. Very cool!

If you want to try other versions of Linux (distros), you can create Live CDs. But my favorite method is to use the free VMWare Player. There are lots of free "appliances" for it where you get just download a file, open it in VMWare Player, and just as easy as that you're running Linux as a virtual machine within Windows (or whatever).

If anyone is seriously considering migrating to Linux from Windows, I recommend that you start by switching to apps that run not just under Windows but under Windows and Linux both. For example, Firefox for browsing not IE, OpenOffice.org for office stuff (or Google Docs or AbiWord & Gnumeric) not MS Office, etc. Then, when you run Linux, instead of saying "Wha? Where are my apps?", you'll feel much more at home.

Also, note that some Windows programs can be run within Linux using Wine (http://appdb.winehq.org/). I think that's how Google created its Linux version of Picasa.

There are also lots of "Windows to Linux" migration resources on the web, like the "Going Linux" site / podcast.

Meant to add that this summer I want to make my own linux desktop and learn each piece. Its my understanding that the kernel can be built with different "modules". So I'm going to look into learning what modules there are, what they do, and build my own kernel. Installing JUST a kernel gives you a terminal, right? For people in your situation, I have heard Gentoo recommended most frequently.

Wrong answer: your "lady and nipper" probably only use the browser to check their email and facebook. Do you honestly believe that Linux would require you to use the CLI for that?

Laptop is running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 exclusively. My desktop PC is "out of commission" until I buy a new one and build it from scratch.* PC was running Windows 7 Ultimate with Lucid via Wubi. Was planning to transfer the filesystem and replace the Windows partition with it, but that's another reason I had to decommission it.

So yeah, Linux exclusively on laptop with WinXP via VirtualBox for my work at the Salvation Army. People are using Win7 there and were testing out alternate server methods using a combination of Ubuntu Server with TurnKey Linux Domain Controller and WinXP Home running on the server using headless VBox so it can handle being an image scanner server...don't ask...
