I have 2 battteries for my N900. With it plugged into the USB charger and powered on, can I swap out the batteries so I can charge the 2nd battery, without turning off the N900? It would be easy enough to test, I just don't want to destroy it if it doesn't work.

No, the N900 always runs off the battery, even when charging. You have to turn it off to remove the battery or it will be (forcibly) powered down.

OK. Thanks. Anyone know of a battery-only charger to charge a spare BL-5J battery?

btw -- great deal on Amazon for a genuine Nokia OEM BL-5J battery, came as part of an accessory kit for Nokia Xpress 5800. I threw out the accessory kit, kept the battery. $11.99 plus $3 shipping.

Yes, I looked for a Nokia 5800 spare battery charger (same BL-5J battery as N900). Didn't find one. Anyone know of one?

EDIT: nm, I found one on eBay. $8.99 spare battery charger with USB port.

That doesn't really support "mobile computer" definition.. I mean, is it that hard to implement power IC like in laptops (can be run w/o battery).

The problem is that the AC-adapter does not supply enough current if the device decides to run at full-blast while you're swapping batteries (depending on adapter, but if powered from computer USB then it definitely is not enough)

Some modern laptops in fact have the same issue. And anyways the dual-powersupply is extra space and weight (and cost) only usefull for a very small subset of the users.

edit: note about current ymmv.

"mobile computer" is just a buzzword.. the OS is desktop-like, the hardware however is not that desktop-ish in many more aspects :) but neither is the battery life, is it.. :)
