N800 and AJAX

Has anyone gotten AJAX to work on the N800 with Opera? I was told that AJAX worked with OS 2007, but not on mine! Can anyone tell me what they are doing to get AJAX to work on this device?

AJAX is not a program that runs, or doesn't run, on your machine. It's a mishmash of different technologies used to create web apps. The only part visible from the user's end is a more or less advanced usage of javascript in the browser.

Depending on how demanding the javascript code was made, and on how good the javascript support in the browser was made, things will work, or only some parts, or not at all.

On the 770 for instance, Google Mail works in AJAX mode, but Google Calendar doesn't. Tiddliwiki sort of works, and Netvibes doesn't even load, and so on. With the same machine, the very alpha port of Minimo mostly succeeds with all of these, so it all comes down to javascript support in the browser.

Note that even if an AJAX app executes correctly, you are in effect turning your browser into a javascript runtime interpreter. If the code is "heavy" the CPU and memory of your machine may not be up to the task, and the app may actually work, but too slowly to be of any use (like Google Calendar in Minimo on the 770).

The N800 has more memory and more CPU power than the 770, and an upgraded version of Opera, so it is logical that some AJAX apps that didn't work on the 770, or were unacceptably slow, now work and/or have become usable. I don't have one, but I guess it's a safe bet that it's still easy to find others that still don't work, too.
