Angry Birds Custom Levels

First off. BIG thanks to Rovio for allowing us to create our own levels ...

so see there for the history. The other thread we are keeping for the editor development and creating this one for custom level discussions

We cant do anything official with the Custom levels yet as there is no easy and impact free method for doing this


The main problem is that the only current way to play the custom levels is to copy over an existing level. Or as we are currently doing, is stealing the Pack2 Slots. However the impact is that any highscore you get on a level will be saved against the real pack 2 when you get it. And in the same way any level you unlock by playing the custom pack2 levels will result in an unlocked real pack 2 level when you come to buy the real expansion. (start subliminal message) AND YOU ALL WILL (end subliminal message)

Here is the How-To for installing custom levelpacks for Angry Birds.
Please only do this, if you don't have the official levelpacks installed, because these custom ones will overwrite your bought LevelPacks! For Rovio (the developber of Angry Birds) it is okay if you install custom levelpacks.
If you haven't seen the video yet, here it is again:

First you have to download this file (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=547863&postcount=148). If you use Windows, then use WinRAR to unpack the file, no need to untar it after. If you've downloaded the file directly to your N900 you can also unpack it there.
Type in the following:
root
cd /home/user/MyDocs/
tar xzvf custom-release.gz

You will get a mypack folder. Copy this folder to the internal memory of the N900 if you unpacked in windows. Then open X-Terminal (you will need rootsh, as every time) on the N900 an type in the following:
root
mkdir /home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2
cp /home/user/MyDocs/mypack/* -R /home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2

That was all! Easy, isn't it? Now you can start Angry Birds and play the new levels.

The rolling rock Comes from the Sky. Basically i gave the Rock a y co-ord that was realy big so it takes 30 seconds for it to fall far enough to suddenly appear on screen.

THe single bird levels were more or less me getting on my feet. working out what was what. Plus there were no single bird levels. so i thought it might add a slightly different element.

I do hope to do a few more. but im also trying to install mythtv on a new machine , and thats gonna eat into my time :-)

If you are talking about pack 3 (ie the big number 1 2 and 3 above each of the 21 levels in the pack) Then some people were lucky enought to buy the expansion pack before it was pulled from the OVI store.

The levels ive tarred up. Is a FAKE expansion pack2 to keep people ammused till Ovi gets fixed and people can buy the real pack 2 and 3 for only £3.

So most people dont have anything other than Pack1, more and more people from the download figures are trying out my fake pack2. BUT as i said before this will set highscores and unlock the real pack 2 levels when people manage to buy this

Here is the How-To for installing custom levelpacks for Angry Birds.

I downloaded rootsh and installed it, and was able to get the root command to work, but when i try to unzip the file (i downloaded the file on my n900) using the next command line in your guide, it says "tar: can't open 'z': no such file or directory".

What am i missing here?

Wow, its amazing what a better named thread can do. We were having about 20 views per level, before i created this thread, and now were nearly at 200views for the latest pack. So big thanks for to teh Admin who sugested i start a new thread.

Its brilliant I agree :) so are the Levels :)

I just have one issue in Level 7 I only see one pig and I kill it but then I can not finish the Level :(
It shows me Level not finished.
What do I wrong?

and the piggy thats there isway to easy to kill to be the whole level.

plus if you look at the level name (always a good idea with my levels)

you will see its Called "Oh Piggy Where art thou"

dont want to spoil it just yet. But if you fail to complete it after some more attempts and a little thought.

that line you entered is the 2nd half of the line above in the instructions. just enter it as 1 commad

the instruction should NOT touch pack 1 just give you a pack2
if you have real pack2 you have to swap in and out. at the moment you cant have both.

rovio hope to develop a solution in the paid upgrade though.

id down load the pack again and copy the file again.
if youve touched the file it migth do that.
designing the levels has been a bit tricky at times as there no debug, and if i got something wrong in file, missing comma, non consistant data it would just kill the game

but my level 5is ok actually file Level88.lua
so cd in pack2 dir and type

md5sum Level88.lua

if you dont get abfb327f6......57fd (there more in middle but tricky to type it all :-}) then you definitly done have the same file. If you do have the same number then im stummped

oh yeah if you know whats your doing.
As well as the phone being so cool, that i can use vi to edit the level while sitting on the bus and test it instantly.

ive been using komodo as an editor on my lap top to edit the files (using ssh) direct on the phone.

so if you untar and unzip the files on a different machine you can ssh them across. Assuming you have the ssh server installed on the phone.

Since the Pack has 300 views. Is there really that many people on this site , and then interested in the pack. or has one of you looked at it 257 times?

and this level has only 9 views and is NOT in the pack do to its Insane high Score. Ive attached it again here.
copy it over file Level38.lua in pack2 directory to place it in Position 11. HOW EVER AS I HAVE SAID AND WILL KEEP SAYING THIS WILL TRASH THE HIGH SCORE FOR WHEN YOU GET THE REAL PACK 2

when a new pack 2 is released with more levels you will need to move this somewhere else. but by then you will have completed it.



OK here it is. Meteor Shower. This one has a high score of about 614100 well thats my SCORE :-)

The plan originally was that the longer you took the higher the score but the harder it was to complete.

but i discovered that the level continues even after all pigs are dead untill all objects stop moving.

so it wasnt quite what i wanted. but its not to bad in the end


Those of you looking at creating levels, might want to look at code as ive used loops and created groups so. if i move the x,y of one of the bird houses the whole structre moves. including the pig inside.

There's a simple explanation: First pack is easy to install/copy/"whatever you want to call it", while this one looks a bit tricky. It isn't, i know.. but the first impression is that it is.

I sugest you (or anyone else) make a simple "how to" on this particular level, just like:

If you wish to try out this level, you only need to:
a) Delete the content on file "Level38.LUA"
b) Copy the content inside the .txt file provided for download on this reply.
c) paste the content inside file "Level38.LUA" and save changes.

You can do this using "WinSCP" from your laptop.

This is, IMO, the best way for me to understand it, as a noob.. ;)

Messing with x,y moves houses/etc, but what if we want to add birds/pigs/etc? Are you interested on making an "how to" on it? (for newbies) ;)

Actually you can even boost your highscore as high as you want, look at my high score in Level 1!

At the moment. Its 1 or the other. but as most people dont have the pack2 its not an issue at moment,

Rovio also hope to try implement in the paid version the ability to use custom levels., but of course that takes time

Yeah there is, now ive dug deeper.

theres a highscore file
/var/opt/rovio/angrybirds/highscore.lua
if you copy this to highscores.lua.orig or some such
you will have a backup copy
that you can put back when you get the real pack2

and every time you swap between pack2 you swap this file. they will stay in sink.

but if you play a L1 or L3 on one highscore file it of course wont be on the other.

I did not have yet time to work on that. Too much work and not time on my private time.
But tricky one.

After I made the post on the blog about our new levels I got instant 500+ views on my site for 3 days running.

Nokia experts also refers to my site, so that increases trafic, and I refer to the threads and use the file downlink directly as you have.

SO there is a good chance the downloads are high.

Also I was thinking could you not create a text file that has the "install" copy etc in it and then noobs just run that from x-term, like in dos you would run a bat file to create the folder and or back up pack2 and then copy and or move mypack?

Is this possible in linux? Might make it easier for everyone

Particularly want this playtested as so far i havent bloody solved it.

It should be possible with 1 bird even if DAMN difficult.
but i havent even managed with 5 (and i thought it would be easy using more than 1 bird)

Just finished level 7.
Once you know where it is, things are getting worse :)
Boldly go where no bird has gone before- there is a reason why this level uses the yellow rocket propelled birds ;)

Rather addictive, got stuck at level 9 but some time and training will do it.

Yeah, I passed that level too, with the hint from cgarvie. I did the rest of them as well, but the last ones are all the same, there are only 10 (I think) individual levels. Great stuff, anyway! :D

Very addictive, without the (for me) usual queasiness I always associate with addictive games (which always makes me stop playing them quite quickly). However, angry birds does suck the battery dry fast.. it's the main reason I now have to charge the N900 daily (the other reason is that after I drained the battery down to 3 volts it never became as good again.)

Have you unpacked the file on the N900 then, or on the desktop?

If on the N900, where did you unpack it?
If on the desktop, you'll need to connect the N900 to the PC and copy the mypack directory over (in mass storage mode, copy it to the root of the mapped drive, in PC suite mode, copy it to the Data directory).

What directory were you in when you extracted the files? If you don't know, run the following in X Terminal (ignore any errors it gives you). It should output a path ending in "mypack".

Okay, that's probably extracted it to the root user's directory. Try:

Have you run the commands given on the second post?:

Folks, instead of running command on the phone, why not install rootsh, openSSH, then winscp on your pc and then you can see all your N900 files through wifi....much easier to copy and paste the files to the required folders rather than typing all these commands on xterm

guys....it was tough for me to do this... But i was totally new to N900 and maemo...and i was able to do this.....
But ones you do this you will really love your N900 more than your girlfriend....
step 1) download the file and unpack all the levels in your PC with the name mypack.
step 2) move it to your babe(N900) and rename the folder to pack2
(all letters in lower case since i heard that linux is case sensitive)
step 3) open up xterminal or debian chroot... I used debian chroot
step 4) Your demo game will have only one pack by default... to look into this you will have to install the easy-deb-chroot....and download the 1.3 GB image file.... Please do this.... Beautiful things in life come with price...And here the price is patience(i had to wait for 10 hours to get this image file)...ones you download this image file after installing easy-deb-chroot.....
Step/surprise 5) you can find a handfull of Debian applications installed... you can click on debian LXDE to view the best view on earth(i'll keep this as a suspense)....to employ your keyboard minimize use the FIX LXDE Keyboard application from your menu.
step 6) Sorry i got deviated.... use the following command.....
cp /home/user/MyDocs/pack2/* -R /home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2

to copy your levels to the game installed folder....

Particularly want this playtested as so far i havent bloody solved it.

It should be possible with 1 bird even if DAMN difficult.
but i havent even managed with 5 (and i thought it would be easy using more than 1 bird)

you have to wait :-) mostly as uploading them from the phone is a pain. so i prefer to sync to laptop and do it from there. Ive been meaning to all week, but been busy

every one will need to add them to pack2 manually.

once ive a few more (mine or others i'll repackage as 1pack)
i also intend to release a script that swaps in real and custom, and to apply 1,2 and 3* scores to each level.

so feel free to PM me what you think your level values to be, and suggest mine if you want.

It's a lot of work for some. A 'patch' delivery system for new levels would get many more installs and so more feedback.
But I also understand this may not be possible at this time.

The reason (mentioned else where) you cant get 3* is that the *scores are stored in a seperate file and are thus defined for the Official 2nd levels. not all the custom ones.

Ok. Ive looked into something ive meant to for a while now
and thats a stage process

1) a setup script

2) a switching script that will swap between Rovio and custom levels

I recon this should work ok. but there a couple of things i need.

First off im gonna move all the levels to pack1. As what im planning is a rovios 3 packs and switch out to custom 3 packs. (ok there will only be about 14 levels to start with)

what id like from at least 4-5 people is what order we should put the current levels in. Should i stick with the order we have (the order they were written )or should we look for a different order,ie try to order by difficulty

So propose and order you think they should be in.

NEXT i need to set the 3 start levels for the custom levels,as at the moment they use the *level of what ever they replaced.

Now if you wait on me doing all this, it'll take longer for me get this released. SO some of you whove played them all, have a quik run through them again and suggest what score should mean 2* and what score should mean 3* if every one does this for a few levels. i'll collate them

Once this is done. I will release the zipped tar file and ask that ONLY linux users try it out with my instruction. Then we can alter the instructions as needed and try to make sure this is a simple process.

In general I think your levels (the original set, I haven't tested the new one) are good. My generic comment is that I think I prefer levels with more than one bird, simply because it makes for more possibilites. Add more debris to knock down too, and the combo (multiple birds+debris) makes for more possible variations in how to replay the game.

My comments on most of the level is, especially when you compare to the original levels from the game developer, there should be more birds provided to allow the player to finish the level in more than 1 way, use the number of stars to reward the player.

In many levels, the player needs to adjust the angle to finish the level, giving more bird allow the player to have a few tries. So, if the player can finish it in 1 bird or as few as possible, they get more stars.

Now with only 1 bird or just enough brids in many levels, sometimes it's like being punished by not following exactly what you want than having fun in the game.

Plan is this weekend. but i still need a little feed back on what the star levels should be set at (there no star levels in previous release)

plus i found a minor bug in my scripts to switch between rovio and custom levels if you switch when AB is runnign so i need to update scripts to reject if AB running.

Im hoping my scripts dont clash with what ever rovio have done for Packs 4 and 5 (as ive seen that there packs 4 and 5 for iphone )

The MyDocs folder (all one word) should be at /home/user/MyDocs (and is the root folder shown in File Manager). And the plain mkdir won't work if the previous directories haven't been created - try:

The levels are NOT numbered in order.

Ive nearly got the new pack with all 15 levels ready to go. BUt ive not had the feed back i need on people scoires . so i can set the start levels right.

Where are you looking for the folders? The File Manager on the N900 (and the drives exported to the PC in either PC Suite or Mass Storage mode) hide everything below the MyDocs folder, which contains the .documents, .videos, etc. folders (the File Manager and PC Suite modes remap these to display as Documents, Video Clips, etc).

OK ive said it before but i'll say it again and its there when you download the pack. There is ONLY 10 levels. the rest were just filling space to stop game crashing.

In the NEW one ive still to release. Level 16 is UNSOLVABLE to stop people playing further

but level 1-2 is called Level57.lua
and level 1-3 is called Level53.lua


The feed back id like is what everyones Top score for the Level is.
that way i'll get an idea where to put the * levels


Currently your * levels are redundant. and again i said right at the start that , im effectivly stealing Rovios pack2 space, and thus the star levels are the star levels set by rovio for there pack2 and are meaningless for the Custom levels.

I am another way to blast the additional levels

Download the level pack to the device ...

Copy this folder to the internal memory of the N900 if you unpacked in windows

In my case / home / user / mydocs /. Documents

Open the X Terminal, type sudo gainroot (if you have installed RootSh) whereupon type MC. If you have Midnight Commander

In one eye looking for our new levels that downloaded the earlier, the second with the windows open directory / home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2

Then gradually everything file by file copy to a folder by using the MC / home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2 all the extracted files

That's all .. I succeeded for the first time ..

lol Some people and their phonetic keyboard txt typing. N900 came with the full keyboard why not use it? also it came with auto completion for words and spell checking. No need to use that type of writing here.

It install painlessly. Download a file, untar it, run a couple of xterm commands and you are using the custom level pack. After that it is just one command to switch back and forth between the custom pack and rovio's pack. Very easy. All your scores and settings stay separate. There are even a couple of new levels to play with. Very fun.

Now I just have to get through all cgarvie's levels again (I promised to play them and post here today) before I try Rovio's new (or re-released) levels. cgarvie is getting ready to release a custom pack. It has several scripts included that do the switching. It also has all the current custom levels plus 4? more. I've played up to level 16. The 4 new "unpublished" levels are pretty coll and creative. One was very tough to get past. Another one required a little thought.

be patient, it'll be out soon. in the meantime just rename your custom pack folder.

Then Download the file attached to your N900. How you do this is upto you.

ITS BEST COPIED INTO YOUR HOME DIRECTORY

untaring the file in the root of the device will take up valuable space and MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS

It is a tgz file but it would not let me upload it as a tgz. so i just renamed as gz

the tar command still works as the extension isnt important to tar

If you installed it using the new process, then you should be able to use the reset script (see http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=547863&postcount=148).

Otherwise you'll need to delete the /home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2 directory as below. This will still leave the high scores & unlock states for those levels set though.

rm -rf /home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2


Make sure the only spaces in the command are either side of the "-rf" otherwise this could cause serious issues.

I also found out (not seeing anyone mentioned it) the screen is zoom-able. That helps with lvl7 where the 2nd piggy is hard to see. (you still can't see it. Maybe the zooming was always available, but I never realize until now.

If you slide up at the left or right edge of your screen to zooms out and slide down for zooming in.

It's almost like the touch pad on the notebook where the right edge of the pad is for scrolling.

Have anyone given thought to why you have to shoot birds from left side of screen. Bit annoying beceause at least i have to change the normal "pinch" orientation of my hand so that i can see screen. Resolution to this would be to give user setting to mirror the view.

hi, i wanna ask.. i downloaded the pack, copied, and try to play it.
i already get the level 2 and 3 in the screen, but in level 2, it's the same game from 2-11 till 2-21. and when i press level 3, my application closed by itself. what's wrong? thx

Why angry birds does not working anymore on my N900 even after i download n install it again n then when i open it / loading it then it say to buy full episodes is available on ovistore, all the episodes have been locked? why? Even when i click on "Ovi Buy Here" then the screen say "sorry this item is not available in your country" But how??? It was working perfectly okay on my N900 n it wasn't trial one?!? Anyone can help me please give me some solution, I'll appreciate for any help looking forward to hearing from u all soon n thank you.

Alright, so I read this entire post and I installed the "mypack" custom levels but I'm having trouble installing the custom-release.gz levels. I understand some of you are pros but the attitude isn't necessary I read an argument on here also and it disgusted me, I mean if someone doesn't get how to do something then just either direct him/her to someone who can or take the time to help them. Saying things like "if you don't know what "cd" is then you should find something better to do" I paraphrased but serious instead of wasting time typing all that out just say "cd = <what ever cd is>" for the people who are new. I haven't installed the custom-release.gz seeing as the instructions are unclear to me.
I think it should be broken down more to not cause another misreading and bricking incident.

At the moment I created "pack2" using "mkdir /home/opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack2" then I'm going to copy over the files from "mypack" which I got from WINRAR-ing it on my PC then copying to MyDocs. I'm going to paste these files using CuteExplorer into "pack2" and see if this works as an alternative to using X Terminal for everything

lets breakdown the commands


tar xzf custom-release.gz

will untar the file into a directory called custom.
MAKE SURE THIS IS NOT ON ROOT

so /home/user
is a good place.

cd custom (im hoping you know this one)

sh setup-cust-AB
runs a shell program called set-up-AB

same for other sh commands they run a shell program of the following name

I typed in sudo gainroot
I typed tar xzf custom-release.gz in X Terminal
and I got "no such file found" I placed custom-release into MyDocs so what am I missing here?

Try "pwd" (print working directory) to check you're in the right location, and "ls" to get a directory listing and make sure the file is actually there.

Often the reason people make those kind of comments is because working from the command line is best done when someone actually understands what they are doing (rather than just following instructions blindly, which is obviously dangerous) and that requires some minimum level of self-sufficiency and willingness to "RTFM" (as the saying goes) above the expectation that basic command line utilities will be spelled out here when there are myriad online resources clearly explaining same.

For example, Rob1n gave you the tools to diagnose your current problem rather than giving you a specific answer about why it probably occurred. I'll give you the additional clue that when you first open an xterminal, your working directory is by default your home directory, which in the case of the N900 is /home/user/. That's not MyDocs. You'll need to change the working directory to MyDocs.

and how would one go about doing such? and I understand one has to know at least what he's doing before pushing forward but if one has no one to teach them what to do then the way to learn is via asking questions and going on from there or doing research for one's self and moving on from there but I like Rob1n's way better.

Alright well I got that one to work, can I post up noob instructions, because the one on there was took me two days to wrap my head around and I only got to understand by using what you showed me and doing some digging myself. I think it would be appreciated for those not used to X Terminal to have somewhere to go for perfectly clear instructions. Is that alright?

Alright this is what I did to install the "custom-release" Angry Birds level pack.

These are the same instructions as the creator posted but are more Noob friendly.

The entire process once followed exactly won't harm your device but I still warn you to place no blame upon me or anyone if anything is to go wrong. I will however try to help where possible.

Well firstly, download the "custom-release.gz" folder to either your PC or to MyDocs on your N900.

When this is finished you'll need to extract the contents and to do this we use X Terminal. So if the folder is on your PC transfer it to MyDocs on your N900.

Open up X Terminal and get rooted (you must have rootsh installed to do this). To get rooted type "sudo gainroot".

Now you got to change the directory to where you placed the "custom-release.gz" folder. If you placed it into "MyDocs" then to change/go into the MyDocs directory type "cd /home/user/MyDocs" (spell exactly as shown)

Now you're working in MyDocs and you want up extract the folder "custom" from "custom-release.gz". To do this type "tar xzf custom-release.gz".

Now you want to be in the new "custom" folder which was extracted from "custom-release.gz" so type "cd /home/user/MyDocs/custom or just "cd custom". To verify if "custom" is in MyDocs use Cute Explorer or your File Manager to browse MyDocs.

Now we are almost finish. Type "sh setup-cust-AB" finally "sh run-cust".

Now the level pack you originally had has been replaced with the custom levels.
To go back to the original ones go back into X Terminal and get rooted again then change directory to custom (by typing "cd custom") and then typing "sh run-rovio". If you didn't close off X Terminal after getting the custom levels then just type "sh run-rovio" to revert/go back to the original Angry Birds levels.

It is suggested that before you perform an OS upgrade or buy and download the OFFICIAL LEVELS to go back into "custom" (cd custom) and run the command "sh run-rest".

has any one been using the custom levels since we got the upgrade.
(i havent bothered what with having designed and played them)

but i though some of the pieces id used had changed properties causing the levels to colapse to the ground.

is this not the case?

Ok guys, this is my first public custom level for AngryBirds 1.3.x
Just rename it to Level1.lua and overwrite /opt/rovio/angrybirds/data/levels/pack1/Level1.lua
It's very easy to beat, but it's my first, so I'm only learning to do it right.
My personal record for the level is: 157390
