So.. Many of you said that the first one was too long and that was right. The second one was shorter but maybe not short enough? :) I really appreciate your support guys (and girls) and i wanted to thank you by making a third video, but this one more stunning and really short.

Sorry for another thread but i think this way is simpler.

See the video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujF3bKDs52A).

You can download AVI from here (http://www.4shared.com/file/214071592/f16d0fe0/n900_extremely_short.html).

Hope you like it.

Link to the post (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40803) how to put it as your boot video (just change the name in conf file)

It would be nice to have a way to disable boot sound when you have to reboot in a meeting room!

It would be nice to have a way to disable boot sound when you have to reboot in a meeting room!

I may have discovered how to do this by mistake...earlier today I had my profile set to silent, and then rebooted to try out one of these videos. I didn't get any sound out of the boot video. Not sure if this works for everyone, but try it to see. Put N900 in silent profile mode before reboot to see if it works.

BTW, another freaking awesome boot video. Soooo many great ones to pick from!!

Switch to Silent profile before booting for that.

as for me - I prefered the 2nd one, which was a 10 sec. version of the very first version. Unfortunatly I am no longer able to download it - I am always receiving this latest very short version instead (which is btw also very nice) Any chance to get a link again to the 2nd version??

Do you need a specific default.conf for this .avi file? I used the one linked in the "how to" post, but I was not able to enter the last line of code (ln -s /opt/n900_extremely_short.avi), without getting this error in xTerm: "1n: not found." I boot up now with no welcome at all, which is better than the Nokia Hands, but what am I doing wrong?

you typed "1n" not "ln" ;)

and of course you have to take the default.conf in which the filename is "n900_extremely_short.avi" or you just rename the .avi to maemo.avi and use the first default.conf from the how to ^^

DrWilken

Not 1(one)n. Is it I(eye)n or l(el)n?

As stated above it's LN (lowercase)... ;)

ln creates links... ;)

-s means symbolic...

So the command ln -s target link creates a link from (target/original) to (link).. :)

Read more here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ln_(Unix)) or here (http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/manual/html_node/ln-invocation.html)... ;)

Thanks to Op for the video. I've ran the instructions in the other thread and the video now loads up on booting, but Im getting what feels like odd behaviour. I wanted to run it past everyone to make sure it's ok.

When i start up the phone now I get the white "Nokia" screen, then the flashing white loading dots. The dots disappear and it goes all black for a few seconds. Then I get the flashing loading dots again, then the new boot video from this thread. I don't remember this stutter before. It also seems slower to put the widgets on the screen now after booting up. Im not sure if this is all in my head, anyone else notice similar behaviour?

I followed these instructions, I changed the name of the avi file to match.

sudo gainroot
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/maemo.avi /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln -s /opt/maemo.avi maemo.avi

Thanks sorodoros. I have rebooted now about 5 times, and it is the same. It's taking around 20 seconds from when the wallpaper and battery indicator section appear until the widgets start popping onto the screen. They popped up pretty much instantly before as I dont have much on the screen yet, a few contacts and the weather app. Hopefully it will settle down.

Nope, no themes - everything like that is still default the way it came. On the desktop Ive only added two contact shortcuts and the maemo weather app, plus there is still whatever was on it when it came (phone shortcut, email shortcut, ovi stuff).

Just as a test; Could You try to copy the /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media instead of linking?

Maybe /opt isn't mounted when it's trying to show the video...?

cp /opt/maemo.avi /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/maemo.avi

I noticed that the default.conf file is owned by user:root (user/group) and it's owned by root:root on my N900... ;)

Maybe it checks the ownership of the file when booting (run the commands as root - i.e. run gainroot before running the commands)...

Try this:
chown root:root /etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf

If that works You can try to move the file to /opt again and create the link once more... ;)

mv /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/maemo.avi /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media
ln -s /opt/maemo.avi maemo.avi

You have good eyes! Still no luck though :) Im going to take a look for updates, clear out sms messages, etc to see what happens. It's possible I only noticed it after rebooting to watch the new video but I guess the problem may be related to something else and I just hadn't spotted it. Thanks again for helping out :)

Thanks, I'm using this one now. Very nice indeed.

Edit: As an aside for anyone else wnating to use this. make sure you change the downloaded vid to a name that has no spaces in it. Other wise the conf file wont recognize it on boot, and you'll just go straight to the desktop (which some would consider a good thing).

ok guys im really sorry bout this, im not any good with any of this codes but hell i would want to change my welcome video.

but it said "not found"

what i did was i downloaded this extremely short but awesome video and renamed it to maemo2.avi and copied it to the documents folder in my nokia n900.

i also downloaded the default.conf and copied it to documents folder in nokia.

1st i typed:
sudo gainroot

which was accepted.

2nd i typed:
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/

which gave me a response of "not found"

uhhh..help me? im on a dead end here. (for me)

please send me a private message.
would really appreciate that.

i think mv is a little bit *****y on the n900. encountered some problem there too.
you may want to try "cp" instead and delete the files afterwards to free space. :)

Hi All,

Would it be possible to change the heading of this thread to begin with [boot video] like the other threads that contain boot videos, makes searching easier.

To the OP thanks a mill this is brilliant :-)

to others trying to make the changes

Here is what I did:
(please note I had to use cp for default.conf as mv would not work) also (please note tha tI change my video name to myboot.avi, meaning that the conf file needs to have myboot in it.)

sudo gainroot
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/myboot.avi /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln -s /opt/myboot.avi myboot.avi

I have also found out that you can have multiple boot videos playing after each other , the system will run the conf files in alphabetic order :-)

I hope this helps others.

Thanks
Chris

A default default.conf looks like this (if that's what you're asking):
[hildon-welcome]
filename=Hands-v32-h264.avi
(that's the standard default.conf)

If what you're asking is how a defaul.conf with modified boot video looks like (excuse me for misunderstanding), this is what mine looks like now:
[hildon-welcome]
#filename=Hands-v32-h264.avi
filename=/opt/bootmedia/n900_splash.avi
with my new boot video (n900_splash.avi) sitting in /opt/bootmedia/ off course ;)

EDIT: Btw, to the OP: really nice work! yours is my boot video now, I like it a LOT! :D

Ah I see, you can add any number of .conf files in the /etc/hildon-welcome.d/ folder, each of them formatted as
[hildon-welcome]
filename=<link to your boot video here>
so you could have a default.conf (referring to the first video you want to show during startup) and a default2.conf (referring to the second video you want to show during startup)

Hey, could it be that you have a typo in the directory you want to copy to? You'd want to copy your default2.conf to the "/etc/hildon-welcome.d/" directory ;)

I hope it works now!
