Nokia was no help and verizon hasn't responded yet. I tried reseting the link again and this time instead of a choice of wireless carriers its simply asked gsm or cdma. I selected cdma, added my user name (cell number@vzw3g.com and the password of vzw and it actually worked.

Well, after playing around with it for a while, I finally got it to work. I can now connect via BT DUN through my Verizon Treo 700w. I can even get it to show up in my "Select connection" screen. Here are the steps I would recommend based on my trial/error:

1 - If you have any phones setup to be paired with the N800, delete those from the BT Devices list (Tools -> Control Panel -> Bluetooth -> Devices).

2 - If you have gone through the "Mobile operator setup wizard", delete that connection as well (Tools -> Control Panel -> Connectivity-> Connections).

3 - Now we'll setup the BT connection to the phone. Make sure your phone has BT turned on and is in discoverable mode. On the N800, go to Tools -> Connection Manager -> Tools (in the Connection Manager drop-down) -> Phone... In the Phone dialog menu, choose new. Th N800 will the search for your phone. Highlight it and hot OK. You'llthen get the "Pair with a device" dialog screen. It'll display a pass code that you can use (or change to whatever 4 digit code you want). Hit OK and your phone should then prompt you to pair with the N800 and ask for the pass code. Don't worry about the next screen on your phone which may not show any services for the N800 (on the Treo 700w, Verizon disables BT DUN, so I use pdanet as a workaround. BT DUN works, but the BT data service doesn't show up in the N800 pairing profile since pdanet is essentially a hack).

4 - After successful pairing, the N800 immediately gives you a new dialog window called "Operator setup". If you should cancel out of this accidentally, you can get back to it (Tools -> Connection Manager -> Tools (in the Connection Manager drop-down) -> Mobile operator setup wizard...). This is what takes the BT pairing connection and sets it up for use on the N800 essentially as a wireless modem. Now, this next step seems odd, but it works. Step 2/4 in that dialog box asks you to choose a country - Verizon folks choose USA of course. However in step 3/4, you are presented with a list of carriers, all of which appear to be GSM carriers. There is no selection for CDMA.

It is important to actually choose one of the choices from the drop-down list even though Verizon isn't listed. For reasons made clear in the BUG area below, you have to choose the wrong carrier. Hopefully, Nokia will fix this.

All choosing one of these does is fill in pre-defined connection detail fields for that carrier. These details can be changed later. Because pdanet is handling the dialing responsibilities and username/password duties on my Treo 700w, it doesn't matter what connection settings are on the N800 (pdanet appears to ignore these details and use its own). Going through the Mobile operator setup is important though in order to let the N800 know that there is a BT DUN connection available.

I chose "T-Mobile Internet". After completing this, "T-Mobile Internet" appears as a selection in the "Select connection" window. You can change the name of that connection to whatever you want by going to Tools -> Control Panel -> Connectivity-> Connections. Select the connection and hit Edit. For Verizon users with pdanet, you're done. You can now use this connection by choosing it from the "Select connection" window.

This is where we need someone to test on a phone other than one using pdanet. Pdanet is filling in the gaps here and my recommendations on connection settings below should be tested on a Verizon phone without pdanet to see if this workaround can be used for all Verizon phones.

For non-pdanet Verizon users, the connections edit dialog box is also where the connection details can be changed that may solve their problem. So, the first screen is the connection name and type. Leave "Packet data" selected. The next screen is where some testing is required.

- I'd say try leaving "Access point name" blank. This isn't an available field when you setup Verizon as the mobile operator (more on that below), so try leaving it blank.
- "Dial-up number" for Verizon is #777
- "User name" is listed as <MDN>@vzw3g.com in the pre-defined Verizon mobile operator settings (again, more on that below) so try that. you could also try replacing <MDN> with your mobile number.
- "Password" is vzw

Bug Bug Bug

There appears to be a bug in the "Mobile operator setup" process for Verizon (and perhaps all listed CDMA carriers). If you do step 1 and 2 above and then instead go to "Mobile operator setup" (essentially reversing the order of steps 3 and 4 above), you are given a dialog box with a choice of carrier type (GSM or CDMA). If you choose CDMA, you can select Verizon. After that, you then get the phone setup dialog asking you to pair the phone.

Seems like this should be the way to setup for Verizon right? Only one problem, that new connection for Verizon will never show up in the "Select connections" window. I've tried it over and over, deleting everything and trying again. With the "Phone connection" selected in the "Connect Automaticaly" field (Tools -> Control Panel -> Connectivity), the N800 will attempt to use this created Verizon connection. You can see it trying to make a connection if you have the Connection Manager open, but it won't ever connect. This pretty clearly seems like a bug.

Hope this helps and please post back about if you do any testing with non-pdanet phones on Verizon.

This is where we need someone to test on a phone other than one using pdanet.I'm running a Samsug i730 PDA phone on Verizon which I have upgraded to WM 5.0. I have PDANet installed for use with my Vaio laptop, but I use it through the ActivSync connection mode.

Since Linux does not have ActiveSync, I poked around on the PDAPhoneHome.com forum, and found someone who connected to an N770 using a hack called BTModem.exe (available at PDAPhoneHome.com), so I downloaded and installed it. I went through the drill here http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i730-i830-i830w/81810-i730-linux-connection-pppd.html?highlight=N800 and the N800 connects to Verizon without a hitch. I'm not sure if the BTModem hack will work on the 700W, but it might be worth a try.

At any rate, niether the phone or the IT asked me for a phone number, username, or password, so I must assume that it got those from the connection manager on the phone.

The only problem I have is that when the phone is connected to EVDO or the connection is dormant, I have to disconnect before I can use it for a modem for the N800. That makes the automatic connection somewhat problematic.

Thanks so much for your very thoughtful attempts to flesh out this strange issue. I have tried your suggestions (and many permutations) with my N800 and my Verizon LG VX8300 phone (non-pda) to no avail. I'm still unable to use the phone as a Bluetooth DUN with the N800, though it works perfectly with my MacBookPro. I have tried both with and without the /etc/ppp/options edit and have been met by complete and consistent failure.

I'm basically ready to give up on this, but it is the one main reason I got the N800 in the first place. If anyone is local in the San Jose, CA area and would like to try it out in person, I'd gladly spring for lunch/dinner or something.

BTW, I've also confirmed the bug that is mentioned with the Verizon connection not showing up in the connections list if the steps aren't followed in order.

I just got an N800 and I'm using it with a Verizon RZR. Verizon told me that they do not allow their phone to communicate network packets over Bluetooth that is disabled by them so I'm out luck unless someone else knows of something.

Can I connect a mini usb out of the Nokia and into the RaZR and use it as a tether? (like a modem)??? Help please.

Great thread...Thanks! I can confirm this works on a NON-PDAnet Treo 700P (i.e., I am using the verizon data plan). A couple of notes, FIRST, instead of selecting Verizon as my CDMA carrier, I selected Sprint. I then edited that entry (renamed it to VZW, and inserted the verizon logon information). SECOND, I only had to enter #777 as the dial up number...in other words, I did not need to enter the user name or password (this is consistent with how the broadband access connection is set for my laptop); having said that, it still works if you really want to enter the user name and password.

So, I agree that there is a BUG when it comes to the Verizon "selection" under the wizard...using Sprint, renaming and editing the entry, and now it appears as a choice under "Select Connection"

The bluetooth DUN on the Treo is far from perfect. Are you otherwise able to use the bluetooth DUN from a PC? If you have a program that is using the broadband connection (e.g., an email program like Chatter), I have found that you need to shut that down. A soft reset sometimes helps also.

The restriction may be lifted by reflashing your phone. Check howardforums.com for details. Mini USB would not help you in this case.

I use USBModem instead of pdanet (because they have a Windows focus and I use a Linux desktop). At first I wasn't able to connect with your suggestions. The phone was paired, the connection was set, it would start to connect but then just die.

I checked to see if a new version of USBmodem was available. It was. I went from 1.50 to 1.56 and set it into background mode and disabled the built-in DUN through the software.

Presto!!!! I now have connectivity via my phone.

+1 for Treo700p & N800 on Verizon Wireless

If I can be of any help, just ask.

Now I just have to sync my contacts :)

Does anyone have any experience getting DUN to work on a verizon phone without PDANet by *gasp* paying for the extra "tethering option" that verizon offers now?


I am preparing to upgrade my phone and am considering a motorola Q and would like to know if anyone has had stable connections with the Q either with or without pdanet. The listing of phones on maemo.org doesn't mention the Q at all.

Hooray, I did it too. I could not get to the internet with the treo alone or with pdanet. However when I loaded usbmodem, disabled the treo's built in dun, it connected without problems. Now to get java and citrix client and I will be happy.

i am now able to connect with verizon on my 700p using the tethered mode hack as described in treocentral also i updated the bt stack from maemo.org before doing as described here (pdanet was a bust)

I am able to use this method for Bluetooth DUN with my LG5300 phone with verizon. I don't use it much though, since I don't want to pay $60.00 a month for the data plan. It did use my minutes once I connected. I am not clear how verizon feels about this.

Using a 700P with the VZW dun plan. 700P is running the VZW Maintenance Release 1. Used the Verizon carrier setup and pairs fine. First connect attempt sometimes seems to fail but second connect attempt works fine.

I'm still having problems getting this to work on my 770 with Verizon and PDA Planet on my Treo 700p. Any advice is appreciated. The devices pair with one another just fine, but when I try to actually connect, the 770 can't connect to the palm's internet service.

I tried Sprint like someone suggested, but it doesn't show up in the selectable options.. T-Mobile shows up, but it wont connect...

And lately, my treo simply locks up whenever I try to initiate the connection from my 770 :(

I have a Treo 700p with Verizon, I can't get an Internet connection despite following the steps outlined in this thread.

I went through the steps described in an earlier post: the set-up wizard under "Connectivity" -> "Phone" in the Nokia. I use the "Verizon Wireless" choice in the drop down menu. All is well: they appear to be paired OK - both devices list each other as trusted devices

The phone will come up under "Select Connections" on the Nokia, and a connection progress box will appear on the phone side, but the Nokia bails with an "Internet Connection Failed."

I got it to work once but only once. Now it fails every time.

This might be a stupid question... do you have the tethering plan from Verizon? It is like $15 extra. You need that plan to be able to tether your phone with the Nokia.

that is *NOT TRUE* you only need to pay the $15 if you do not want to violate the TOS with vzw - technologically speaking you do not need the tether plan.

LG VX8300 vs. Nokia N800 = Good DUN

I have QPST-hacked SW v3 on the VX8300 and non-hacked n800.
I used the following fix with QPST.

2. Tether and connect the phone to the N800 as advertised by Nokia, using the default Verizon settings, but don't forget to put your number in place of <MDN>.

Firstly, thanks for everyones help on this issue, and here is some more help for those with an xv6700 on verizon. I have upgraded to WM6, with a custom ROM, but the instructions are presented as working for WM5.0 so I have no reason to doubt they will work in many iterations.

I have a just purchased an n800 with the latest OS and followed the included wizards to set up first a blue tooth partnership, then a new CDMA phone connection. MY XV6700 showed as available in the connections dialogs after partnering. I entered the data service number in the connection wizard #777, but no ID or password. Connected first time. I have not tested it over time, but my gmail loaded up with decent speed, clearly evdo bandwidth.

I followed the directions here and at the Mark Venture page, and connected immediately with my motorola v710. This is an older phone (verizon's first bluetooth model) and maybe they didn't mess with it as much as later models to keep it from accessing the data network. Contrary to some of the threads here, I actually got a "verizon" options on the Nokia during setup, and I can switch back and forth from wifi to verizon with the connection mananger, all without the v710 ever leaving my pocket. Very cool.

I have no idea how this is being billed. A couple of years ago, I used their 1g net connection (pokey old 14.4.) a lot with my laptop, it was an ideal way to kill time on weekends during long swim meets. That was free air time and it never cost me a penny. I plan to be careful until I see this month's bill.

I have a Verizon 700p; just picked up an N800 and love it, but am trying to get the DUN problem solved. I do not have PDAnet or USBmodem but will certainly consider getting one of those if it's relatively certain that it would solve the problem. I'm a Linux guy too, but have one Winblows box I can use if necessary to get this installed (again, if I need it).

Anyway, I went through the procedure(s) on the first page. The version of the connectivity software I have on the N800 does list Verizon as an option, but it couldn't get out at all using that choice. I tried it using the "Sprint" option, then changing the settings as described earlier.

The results are variable. Sometimes I don't get a connection at all. Sometimes, the icon on the phone changes to a "computer" (and once, the phone tried to do a remote sync while I was doing this, and an error message came up saying that a DUN connection was in progress). However, I usually get a box with the message "Remote server error" on the N800. So, I think I'm close, but not there yet. I tried entering "<cell number>@vzw3g.com" as a username and "vzw" as a password, but that usually resulted in "Authentication failed" (or similar).

Any other ideas?? :confused:

A couple thoughts.

If you don't currently pay for the $15/month Verizon "tethering" option then I think you'll pretty much need something like PDAnet (short of finding a current hack for your 700p, which there may be).

The old method of using your number@vzw3g.com/vzw just doesn't work on more recent phones with newer VZW firmware. (Again without hacks) Basically Verizon clamped things down by introducing a new auth server (dun.vzw3g.com) that just has paid access.

FWIW I'm on a Verizon Motorola Q using PDAnet via bluetooth. Works fine. They do have a demo you can try if you want.

OK...I have installed PDAnet (and installed the latest firmware on the N800). However, it doesn't seem to work. I have PDAnet set as Mode=Dialup and Port=Bluetooth. The two devices pair up but don't connect. PDAnet says: "Unable to establish connection with your PC (code=779)".

I had the same problem with a diffrent phone and I fixed it. I only pay 25$ a month for Verizion TV and VCAST. I hacked the phone and it works great with the N800. Look hereI wrote up simple instructions for setiing up a LG VX9400 verizon. Some where in the instruciton it tells you how to setup NAM.

OK...Googled PDAnet and it says that the "PC" has to be running some flavor of Windows. That pretty much leaves me out since both my laptop and the N800 are running Linux. However, one of the original posters apparently got this working with an N800, though their Treo is the WIndows version.... ???? What's the straight story on it?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the Palm devices.

With the Windows Mobile PDAnet, you install it and then you have an option on the PDAnet phone app to enable Bluetooth DUN. Once that's done, then I just tell the N800 to use GPRS, dial #777 and don't give it any username or password.

I think the part about have a PC running windows is if you want to offer the PC connectivity throught he phone via tethering/sync. At least it's that way for the Windows Mobile PDA net version.

Hmmm...well, PDANet doesn't seem to be working for me. I had forgotten to select the Treo in the "Phone" setting after flashing the latest OS and restoring everything. After I did this, I was back to where I was before...they'd connect, but I'd get "remote server error" with no username/passwd, or "Authentication failed" with.

There must be something simple I'm missing here in regard to PDANet. The Palm version has four options: Mode (Dialup or Proxy), Port (Bluetooth or USB), "Auto Connect on Startup" and "Remain Connected on Exit". I have it set to "Dialup" and "Bluetooth". There are no dropdown menus available - at least, I can't find 'em.

My only guess is that for some reason Treo is using some sort of standard built-in DUN rather then PDAnets version. You wouldn't be able to authenticated with the standard Treo/VZW DUN. But honestly I really have no experience with Treos/Palm/PDAnet. Could it be the Palm version of PDAnet doesn't offer up BT DUN services? Just connecting via BT sync with a PC?

It might be worth a shot e-mailing June Fabrics to tell them what you are trying to do. They've been very resposive to me in the past.

The Palm version of PdaNet does not support Bluetooth DUN since it will
conflict with the build-in feature. Only the Windows Mobile version of PdaNet
Supports Bluetooth DUN.

I selected "none" as the carrier,
selected "Data Call" instead of GPRS or WLAN,
entered #777 as the number to call,
used "qnc" as the username and password.

It's slow, but it works over bluetooth. I don't have EVDO on my phone, so I think that is why it maybe asks for different inputs than the other devices.

Thanks, gave it a try, but still no go. The N800 and the Treo connect via Bluetooth, the little computer icon appears on the phone, but there's still an "authentication error" when I tried "qnc" as both the username and password, and "Remote server error" when I enter it as the username only.

I've tried that (using other carriers). I apparently don't have the settings that Verizon wants, because I get authentication errors from their server, whether I put in a user/password or not. The number I give it to dial is #777.

The best one to pick is most likely sprint. They are cdma too. Should work like a charm.
I use internet on the tablet from day one over BT with never a crash or issue. Its totally seamless i leave my phone in my pocket and things just work. The version 2 choc. totally rocks as a modem.

I have tried Sprint. The problem appears to be the login credentials. Using #777 as the number, they connect, but then I get "Remote server error" if I leave the password/username blank, and "Authentication error" if I give it anything in those fields. It appears that the link you gave was pretty specific to the Moto KRZR. Anyone have a link to a similar procedure on the Treo 700p? I don't run WIndoze very often but have one box here which dual-boots with it; it always sees the 700p as a Palm PDA device rather than a Bluetooth modem.

I will take a longer look at howardforums.com, though - looks like there's some pretty useful stuff there.

However when I tried to pair my LG Voyager - Verizon provider- with the N800 I could not get it to work. Even though I have paired it with the phone when I try to make the connection I keep getting "Authentication Failed" Can anybody help? Has anyone successfully connected to the LG Voyager?

I have the $60/month data plan with the USB modem- and thought maybe just maybe I can now use the n800 on the road- which is where I spend 1/3 of my life! Dragging out the laptop is sometimes not an option- therefore the N800....

What happens is when I try to connect- all seems to be going according to plan- the phone exhibits its EDVO messages- but then the N800 displays "Authentication failed"

I have checked my settings, used vzw as my password, used my mobile number with @vzw3g.com as user name and #777 as the dial up number.

I don't want to hack my mobile device as I'm always the one to get caught- and I don't have $800 to pay and then maybe get the payment reversed later...

Can anyone out there help me get over this last hurdle?


I really love the N800 when I can get to a hotspot- but that really doesn't happen too often!

I'm trying now to make a bluetooth connection on the XV6800 to the N810. I've installed the WM6_BT_DUN.cab but it still says connection failed to phone XXX. Not sure if anyone else has this phone on verizon with a data plan, but I thought I'd post and see if someone managed to get this to work for them.

Is there a registry edit I'm missing? Must I use pdanet? I'd rather ask for applying the trial and error approach and further...

I have sprint centro (Palm OS) with Win XP, and had same message. I was able to get rid of it by deleting devices from both PC and Centro in Bluetooth Trusted Devices. Then reboot PC. Add the device through the PC Control Panel/Bluetooth Devices/Devices/Add. It only seems to work when I use 0000 as the passkey. Letting windows choose passkey or choosing my own passkey other than 0000 did not work.

verizon is quite draconian and very specific with the TOS

unless you subscribe to the data and tethering plans/options (very expensive- about $60/month as i remember) you cannot tether w/o violating the TOS

I tried to use the connection I had and it worked. However the first page I go to it says "you can use Verizon on the go etc etc etc... if you fork over $60 per month access fee, and a 5GB limit.

I have the treo 700/750wx can I did the process in the first few posts on this thread. I am on the verizon network. When the connectivity settings came up, I chose t-mobile, selected "data call" button, and used #777 for the phone number--no user, no password. Voila. Happy.
