View Full Version : PSP screen protectors: Weird

I bought a set of PSP screen protectors today. They're pretty cheap, and I only needed to take off a few mms on one side to meke them fit.

Funnily enough, after applying the protector to NaB00's screen, all its buttons started behaving quite weirdly: the on/off button would randomly activate, the D-pad either did nothing or registered double or triple presses, the menu-keys stopped working.

After removing the PSP protectors, everything returned to normal (for now <knocks on wood>), so maybe those of you who have experienced similar problems might consider removing the PSP protectors.

I don't get it
You applied that screen protector and now the buttons don't work!?
I am using also a screen protector (Vikuiti ARMR200) on my 770 and my new N800 and have no problems!

Do you have a link to this psp protector?

Is it possible the PSP protector may have been putting tension on the LCD screen, ie, pulling up on it and somehow creating unwanted contacts somewhere? Other than that I can't think of a correlation...

Having used screen protectors on PDAs I'm almost certain the problems you saw was caused by pressure on the digitizer. This is always a risk when applying a screen protector, if you use slightly too much pressure you'll squeeze the top layer enough to touch the digitizer, and then you'll see the problems you described (there's probably a data input layer (I'm talking about the OS here) that is kept 'busy' by the always-pressed digitizer, and thus the buttons appear not to work).

You should be ok if you're gentle while applying the screen protector. It can be a little tricky, I've run into the same kind of trouble several times on my PDAs. Removing the protector fixes the problem because that will 'lift' the LCD glass top away from the digitizer.

I thought I kept it clear from the sides (getting the screen protector under the edge is usually the "best" way to get digitizer malfunction -- also called "jaggies" in Newtonspeak), but it's hard to tell with cut-to-size protectors.

In any case, the next one I'll try will be a protector made for a touchscreen!

I've had problems too with a cheap PSP screen protector on my 770. As the PSP doesn't have a touch screen, thickness is not an issue, but it was on the 770, as the pen wasn't detected anymore, even with mucho pressure :-)

On the subject of screen protectors, but somewhat unrelated: My first Newton came with a screen protector on it; it was one of the lightly adhesive kind, with a particularly textured surface that was quite nice to write on (mind you, the Newton MessagePads had a coating on their screen that was very tactile as well). I liked it a lot, but never found out what brand it was.

When it finally wore out, I switched to NuShields (http://www.nushield.com/products.htm), which are of the non-adhesive kind. NuShields worked great on my Newton, but, in light of my experience, I don't think I'd recommend them for the N800, even if they were available for it.

I use Pelikan brand PSP screen protectors, FWIW. I have not noticed any odd behavior, beyond the documented things allready attributed to something else. I will have to remove these and see if there's any difference. These particular ones are rather stiff, not really flexible like a film. What would you recommend using?

Right now? Nothing, as I don't know of any screen protectors designed for the N800.

Thanks, I just took mine off as well.

Hi all,

Isn't the screen for the 770 and N800 the same size?

I had a MartinFields screenprotector for the 770 and though I have not used it on the new N800 (as the one Nokia provided seemed to be ok for now) :D

Here's the link. http://www.martinfields.com/US/productdec.asp?pid=2228&modeln=770%20Internet%20Tablet&model=nokia_770

They are not cheap.. but (IMHO) they are very good, I have used them on my mobile phones and they are quite scratch resistance and yet show the brilliance of the screen.

Hope that helps.;)

Not true : all the main brands have protectors specifically made for the 770, ergo for the N800...

Please allow me to rephrase: I cannot find any of the friggin' things where I live.

Nevermind, I'll get one in Thailand. They cut them to size for you in the shop, while you wait. I got one for my P910 there, and after more than a year there's still not a scratch on it. Now that's what I call a protector!

Well, of course "where you live" has become a somewhat quaint notion for small items such as these.

In December of 2005 when I received my 770 there were also none available in France. Brando in Hong-Kong (a well-known brand and shop with a great reputation, even if their web site is a bit weird :-) had a "Xmas special" on them - 10$, shipping included. Arrived in a few days in a plain brown envelope, and that was that.

Heck, you can't even get anything *shipped* between two places in France for that kind of price ! :-)
