Is the N900 able to distinguish between thumb and stylus? Does the controller return any width factor, or just a point?

If it does, (or if sb can think of a workaround to do it) then when a thumb clicks on an area of the page with multiple links (let's say the pager of this forum) the links would spread around in a circle to make selecting easier (or just zoom in)

I don't think that it can distinguish the difference...
I think that if more than one point is pressed -- like you would have with a thumb -- the screen just returns the mid-point as the selection.

the N8x0s distinguished between stylus and finger input (thumb on a text field and you would get thumbable on-screen keyword, use stylus and you would get a smaller one).

I'm faily sure the N900 could do that as well but the UI concept is completely different so they removed this feature from the OSK

As crenquis said, the screen probably only returns the exact pixel where the screen is pressed.
