View Full Version : Am I the only one lucky with my N900?

I have N900 for two months with twice updated firmware in this period as well.
Every day I am reading the Maemo forum – looking for news, programs, information and etc. and I just couldn’t believe how it is possible. There are so many problems with N900, so many issues, and so many negative feelings that (if I haven’t got n900 already in my hands) can compel me never to buy this tablet.
What I mean is reading these posts I am really astonished because I’ve never had such issues – how is it possible to happen? I’m not a power N900 user but I’ve already tested the most of the mentioned bad issues and I’m really impressed:
1. No unwanted reboots (uptime: 5 days, rebooted since the last firmware update)
2. No Wi-Fi issues
3. Bluetooth works perfect with my old BH-203 handset
4. The battery has recharged since 1 to 3 days - depends how often I play with the N900
5. The FM transmitter works fine (but I don’t like the quality of the sound)
6. No GPS issues
7. No Media player issues
8. No memory leaks – the behavior of my n900 is normal even I’ve installed so many applications on it
9. No scratches on it – even I’ve dropped it in the beginning
10. No camera/pictures quality issues
11. X-Terminal – I love it… and I have no related issues, Vim works perfect and other console related apps
12. No USB issues
13. No Sound or Mic related issues
14. No Infrared issues (Shutter works perfect)
15. Video calls (via gTalk) works perfect as well
16. No Skype and related programs issues
17. No network related issues – VNC works fine, SSH server/client works fine other similar apps works fine as well
I don’t see the sense to continue with this list.
I just want to ask you – am I the only one who don’t have such problems?
mine works great too...no problem at all...

I have had my N900 since November and I've never needed to flash it. It works great, and the strange thing is that I've tested nearly every app in Extras Testing and I've not had any problems - yet - .

I'll continue: Even eMail sync to Microsoft Exchange works fine!
Ok, only geeks can make use of the full power of the thing, but sveral non.geek friends also bought one by now and are quite happy with it, in particular the communications integration (contacts, status displays, skype, IM, eMail, SMS, ...).

Only problem I've had is that sometimes call volume drops, but after newest firmware I haven't noticed that either..
Device hasn't crashed once and only time I've rebooted is after a firmware update/app that requires it after install.
Haven't had to flash it once, works like a charm.
Oh and had it for 2.5months now.

nearly 2 month now and it works like a charm. of course there are things with place for improvement ... but that's the fun with this device, it's getting even better step by step.
and just started hacking my own widget to tweet the current song via last.fm - 100% on the device. i think that is what this makes a mobile computer.

Mine is also working well. The only time it didn't was when I was loading a number of apps from extras-devel, which filled up the root filesystem.
Moral of the story: stick to the normal and Extras repositories, or install the rootsh package so you can work around this problem.

had mine since early december and everything is great. do have a very small bright spot on screen but that was my own fault. removing the inivisible sheild was not very friendly to the device! the device is great tho, especially since installing easy debian. people are always amazed to see a full blown desktop running, especially when i show them gimp. in short, i love this device and i think its rock solid.
I'm also perfectly happy :)

The only bugs I've complained about have all been fixed by the last major firmware update. This last "pre-update" upgrade also make it run a little faster too. The battery life is less than stellar, but I live in a fringe reception area and every phone I've used in the past few years needs charged up every night.
However, I do get some Nexus 1 envy... voice commands would be great when driving.
i'm happy as well.
mine is on since 20 days now. although i'm going to reboot sometime, as it seems that it got a bit slow now. i think a reboot will "refresh" he device.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with my N900. I just have a few gripes that annoy me :)

Same with me! Four weeks ago by reading http://temporaryland.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/openoffice-org-and-the-gimp-on-the-n900/ I discovered Easy Debian, aka easy-deb-chroot, and the N900 doubled its usefulness for me. Without any danger of messing up the firmware, this gives a load of extremely powerful applications: openoffice, gimp, network printing through cups, evince, djview, latex, vpnc, firefox as alternative browser with java and flash, and more. Everything very stable and surprisingly usable on this little device.

yeah exactly! isnt easy debian the best! i played around with desktop a fair bit so its just like a proper pc install. so awesome running full desktop software on the device.
Mine is also running like a champ. Just missing a good GPS/Nav App and MMS (haven't tried fmms yet because I'm steering clear of devel after one app made me reflash)
navit didnt do anything for me (no map showed up and does not exactly have a finished menu) Maep is good for now.

I have been in love with it since I bought it. Does everything I hoped and still discovering new things. It's my first unlocked phone and I am thrilled not to have to wait for carriers to make updates available. Just works! Yesterday I spent the day with it shooting a ton of pix. I felt great uploading them all to Flickr without having to carry another device, download a card or anything. These moments make me happy that this was the right decision.

love my n900 =)
the only issue for me is the email set up w/c i don't know why it's rejecting my second yahoo email add and telling me that username/password is wrong when it's not. the second is the media player is very picky and can't be minimized...

I'm glad you made this post since I was thinking that a post like this should be made...
yeah, I love my n9, no biggie problems and if I didn't have one, and read all these posts, I'd have to think twice...but I'm definitely glad I got one. I just want to hug it sometimes :)
my biggest issues are flaky-ness with sync'ing work's outlook 2007 sometimes and the occasional stopping when playing encoded DVDs (which maybe I'm encoding them incorrectly, or the microsd isn't sufficient...need to investigate).
Of course, I'd love to see better on-board GPS mapping and sync capability with ovi suite, but it'll get there...

Hi there,
finaly got my N900 a week ago und I'm allready in love with it. Just one thing: maybe I'm blind but I can't find an option to set the volume of the systemsounds. Not the ringing when someone calls me but the "click" when you tap the screen, Got the vulome up to max in the power-button-volume but it is still to low. Can't tun it off either. Just right now it's just loud enough to irritate me... Anything I've missed???

Mine is working fine too. I was really scared of the reboot issues, but I've had it for a month already and have had 0 unwanted reboots.
Sure there are still some minor software annoyances, and I already scratched the screen but otherwise I love mine, none of the showstopper problems people keep complaining about in here.
The feeling of a portable computer is amazing with this thing. It really is that good.

I got the wifi battery drain bug all of a sudden, but tg two days later the update was released. Apart from that, everything fine.
Good thread to have because only the problems get to the surface and I was starting to believe that having a fine N900 was a chance in a thousand or sth.

I was having the best time with my phone, until the camera and SD card issues arised....whenever I take a photo or video with automatic save to my SD card, it wipes those pics and videos off after few hours....still haven't figured a solution for this....I connected the phone to the pc....did the chk disk and fix and all that but those pics n videos were gone.....happened twice.....but apart from that the phone is AMAZING ! but would really love to find a solution for my camera and SD card issue....when the photos and videos are wiped out, it won't let me take any further photos or videos unless I connect it to the pc and do a chk disk......i wont always have a pc or laptop with me.....if anyone know of a solution to fix this then do feel free to share....but N900 is great overall

Hi,
Mine is also very good.
Only issue is USSD which is known bug. But, I can live without that. I have installed USSD widget which gives me balance whenever I tap on it.
Only thing I do not know is how to send file from file manager using bluetooth.
I need more applications and games for this. I would love to have personal finance or Home bank kind of application for my N900. I also want free office applications. (especially spreadsheet).

This might just be the flexible layer of the touch screen sticking to the surrounding plastic. try gentley cleaing the edges with something like a baby wipe. i had this with my n900 after an unfortunate incident where half a bottle of beer got spilt all over my device. was i scared? yes, but not as much as i should have been cos i was completely smashed. does the device still work? yes, and flawless as ever.

i got a very small one of these and it was my own fault for removing my invisible sheild screen protector. those things do not come off easy! bad news is it never faded but like i said its really small so i dont notice it most of the time. as far as i know there is no fix for this. i think its probably an idea to take it to a nokia service centre and see about having the screen replaced.

I have my N900 for two weeks now.
I can't say how much I love this little guy. Having a full-blown Linux as a cellphone? No words can describe it. Easy to program, easy to hack, easy to understand.
I only had one issue with wifi not reconnecting. And it occured only once, two days after I got it. Never occured again.
I am so very satisfied with this phone. I'd really really really like it to be a commercial success. Oh, and I'd like 3G videocalls too. ;)

The lack of navigation is not a problem for me, I have to carry 2 phones anyway......the N900 with a Mexico's sim card and my old N95-8G with a UK sim and the best thing of all, I don't have to carry around my laptop anymore while conducting business outside the office.:o

Both my N900's (one remains--a tragic accident, I don't talk about it much) have been really great. My N810w is also a dream. It's really the software platform and community that make it so worthwhile. I wish I had more hands and time.

I just want to ask you – am I the only one who don’t have such problems?
more issues are coming out day by day, if you dont experience such issues on your n900, i believe you are so lucky

Mine works great since early December 2009. I decided to give it to my wife since her phone was dead and so far no complaint from her except for a few bugs (Does not accept GSM code) that hopefully will be resolved with the next firmware update.

well thats awesome, maybe nokia is not kidding when they said that only a "limited" number of n900 has hardware or somewhat software issues.
I'll watch this over and over,
Had mine since december. No problems, no crashes, no failures. Everything works as expected.
Only issue is I had to reflash to global firmware because the UK firmware didn't get an update recently but all is well and this device replaces most functions of my laptop when I am away from the home.

we have two in the household and both have been fine since the start of january
it coming up for around 8 weeks now
both phones have been used daily and recieved lots of use as main phones over the weeks and i havent experienced any problems whatsoever with either of them
i might add that they are used hard and used ina physical job with no case and not treated with silk gloves like some users talk of and they are fine , no scratches , no creaks , no faults , touch wood , pretty solid handset in my eyes
your allways going to read of faulty handsets on the net but to be honest the n900 has not been hitting the headlines with faults like the n97
if you have a dodgy n900 just send it back for repair/replacement as it isnt normal and most work just as they should
really enjoying the n900 its a beast and a tough one at that
