Routers and configurations

I'm starting this thread based on a suggestion by TA-t3. I will list routers I've used successfully with the 770 and N800, along with quirks. Add yours to the thread and I will update this post. Hopefully the admin will sticky the thread.

Linksys WRT54GC
Compact wireless G router. 4 100bt lan ports. Highly configurable. Usually works well with tablets but must be in mixed mode. Occasionally induces "network problem" error on tablets and must be rebooted to correct. Can suffer interference from neighbors; adding Linksys HGA7s 7dBi antenna can help significantly.

Netgear WNR854BT
Stand-up MIMO router. 4 1000bt lan ports. Reasonably configurable. Worked extremely well with tablets but died abruptly after 4 months usage (under warranty). Very stable, fast connection.

When I first got my 770 I had a cheap old "Pheenet" 11 Mbps (WEP) router. Later on I disabled the Wifi part and kept it as a router/NAT/firewall/LAN switch. Added an entry-level Netgear WG602 54Mbps AP with WPA.

The tablet has always worked fine with both, in DHCP or fixed-address mode. Always connects first try, and connections are very stable.

I have a Linksys WRT54GS with custom DD-WRT VPN firmware and a Linksys WRT54GC. My 770 connects flawlessly to both using WPA2. I've also tested it with NetGear and DLink routers with no connectivity (i.e. performance, stability...) issues.

Open network connections are very flaky and I think it's because of signal strength.

Linksys WRT54GS v2 with Sveasoft Talisman v1.2rc3 firmware here

Works perfectly with both 770 & N800 in WPA-PSK/TKIP mixed b/g mode.

Haven't rebooted it for over 6 months.

IEEE 802.11g 54 Mbps & IEEE 802.11b 11 Mbps support

WEP password security enabled
DHCP server enabled

This is a very basic WIFI router but it does the job more then well!

Linksys WRT54G v2 with DD-WRT standard v23(I think). Works fine but I haven't tried it with encryption as I keep my router open for neighbors and passers, as I live in a fairly dense part of Seattle, WA.

Texrat, I only use my WRT54GC while traveling; so, limited use, no need to reboot; however, as I customize (read screw, sometimes) my WRT54GS regularly, time to time, the poor thing stops working and I have to reboot :D

thebeck, DD-WRT v24 (beta) allow virtual subnets; look on Internet to see how you can setup a secure segment for your use and another one (less bandwidth, open) for public use. ;)

Will DD-WRT work with the WRT54GC as well? sounds like a nice option.

Unfortunately, it doesn't; works with those routers that run linux (Debian); DD-WRT is not the most stable one (Tibur is for that), but it's the most feature rich that is freely available; still, it's fairly stable though...

I use a Linksys WRTSL54GS with Thibor 17C firmware (linksysinfo.org).

A very nice home router with a 4 port 10/100 switch and 802.11 B/G WiFi.
Best feature is a USB port where you can connect a flash thumb drive or external hard disk or a printer. With a hub, you can connect several devices.
There is a UPnP Media server that can stream music, videos, pictures etc from the attached storage device to any UPnP client like Canola or Mediastreamer. Also a Samba server so you can mount a shared folder and an FTP server so you can access the attached storage from the internet. All this without needing your PC to be turned on.

And then there's the normal features of Thibor's excellent version of HyperWRT like custom firewall scripts, QOS and gaming settings, UPnP port forwarding, DDNS updating, Static DHCP so your devices always get the same IP address, custom access restrictions if you want to limit the times your kids can access the net, telnet and ssh access to the linux shell, adjustable WiFi output power (default is 50%), site survey to see what other nodes are in your area.... the features go on and on.

I use WPA2 Personal security setting with TKIP + AES and my 770 connects with no problems.

If you're getting interference from neighbors have you tried changing channels on the router? I use Netgear WGR614 works pretty good. I occasionally have problems with my 770 connecting to it requiring reboot of the router. It's an odd problem though, because the 770 is the only one that has the occasional problem, since my laptop, pda, and wireless media streamers have never had problems connecting to the unit.
