Can we please compile a list of T-mobile devices that can be used for the Bluetooth DUN connection for the N800.
I don't believe how difficult it is to get an answer from T-Mobile which devices will work.
I am willing to move away from my blackberry 8700g for a device that will work with the n800. PLEASE HELP.
I want to simply walk into my t-mobile store and get the best damn phone that will work (EDGE network required).
Thanks,
Jeff

I use a Nokia 6620 with my N800 and t-mobile DUN and it works beautifully. You won't be able to get this phone at a t-mobile store, though. I purchased mine online and then had it unlocked and flashed to the latest unbranded firmware by iunlock.com

Hopefully the DUN has not changed much between the 770 and 800. I have used 2 on my 770 with T-Mobile, Moto Razr V3 GPRS it is slow but it always connected, I’m currently using a Samsung T509 with EDGE, any phone with a DUN profile should pair with the tablet.

As this is a global site it usually helps to mention your location! :D
Which regional T-Mobile are you interested in? T-Mobile UK, T-Mobile Germany or just the US where most network providers seem to cripple phones for a laugh? :)
That said, is it even the ISP or the phone manufacturer crippling the phone? It seems that people have had problems with Palm Treos and Blackberrys and some Motorola/Samsung phones, but Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones seem fine with the N800. T-Mobile in the UK are possibly the best network provider when it comes to internet connectivity - few if any UK phones have DUN disabled and doing so would not be a smart move.

Sorry for not posting the geographic regions of interest. I am in the US.
I have ready many posts about providers in the US making the DUN profile diabled. When talking to level 3 technical support for T-Mobile US - they make it seam like any phone listed as having bluetooth should work.
From reading the posts about the DASH - I know this is not the case.
Thanks for the posts from the people who know.

;) I have a Nokia 770 and a Nokia 6682 Phone ( got it new and unbranded online ). They pair very well with each other. I have T-Mobile Service and use EDGE capacity of the phone to go online when no WiFi is avalable. Before using the Nokia 6682, I have used a Nokia 3650 Phone with GPRS to go online with the Nokia 770. I think there is enough information here in this Forum about which brand of phones are best suited to be used with the Nokia Internet Tablets. Good Luck. :D

Bryan H,
I too have a 770 and a T-Mobile t509 (Samsung). I have tried to pair them. I actually see file folders (like 'photos', 'sounds', 'voice notes') from my phone listed in the file manager of the 770. However, when I open a folder, they are all empty (it says, "(nofiles/folders)" ) even though there are indeed photos, etc stored on the phone. So, it appears that the 770 connected to the phone and "saw" it's folders but not the files in them.
Similarly, the phone "sees" the 770 under "my devices", but when I select the 770 the phone says it's unable to connect to the device.
How did you manage to get the two devices to communicate with each other so you could use the phone as a modem?
thanks,
Neil

I also had a question for Bryan H or anyone who might know. I'm with T-Mobile and have a Samsung t509 as well and was wondering if the extra $5.99 web and apps charge would let you use the phone as a modem when no wi-fi was around or if I'd have to get one of "Internet Only" plans or something instead. Just curious since the T-Mobile site doesn't really mention pairing a phone with a laptop or tablet for internet access unless it's a Blackberry or Sidekick.
Thanks!

Have you actually been able to get the two devices to recognize and communicate with each other? For example, have you been able to transfer files between them?

I do not know how you will get the Nokia 770 to recognize and pair with the Samsung T509 ( surely, there is some kind of hack mentioned in this Forum somewhere ). As I mentioned before I use my Nokia 770 IT recognized and paired with my Nokia 6682 phone. I can get to the Internet when no Wi-Fi is available. I have not subscribed to any extra Web / Data plan. At present, I use the simple 600 Minutes / $ 39.99 T-Mobile plan. This is strictly a regular Voice Plan with no involvement of any kind of ' Total Internet Plan ', a Data Plan and all that.
I am sure that once you figure out how to get you Samsung T509 and the Nokia 770 / N800 recognize and pair with each other, you will be able to do the surf the Net without paying anything extra for any Web / Data Plan. ;)
Update:
Try to see if the folowing works for you. This is from a post by a gentleman named " Historian ", on this Forum. You can also search for ' Samsung T509 ', to get more information about this.

I use a T-Mobile Plan they call "Total Internet Plan VB" it's $49.99 a month, I'm not sure what T-Mo thinks it should be used for but it has always allowed me to use the T509 as a DUN modem and gives me access to the Hot Spots at Starbuck's and Borders's with my 770, it's a flat rate with unlimited data. I have never had any other plan so I can't say if a different plan would allow for the DUN access.

I'm sorry, I should have clarified. I DO have a Samsung T509 phone at the moment and just upgraded to it recently (to get the plum one and passed the silver one on to my boyfriend, which made an unfortunate run through the washer and dryer a week ago) so I don't plan on upgrading again for (hopefully!) a little while.
I DO NOT have a Nokia N800 just yet as I'm still waiting anxiously on my tax return before I can purchase it. I was just curious, while playing the waiting game and checking the forums daily, if these two devices could pair with each other, since I've heard so many complaints about the Blackberry, and also wanted to know if I needed to upgrade my plan to allow internet access if I need to use it in a pinch. I currently have the $69.99 family plan (700 shared minutes) right now which suits us perfectly fine but I guess I'll try pairing it with the N800 when I finally get it. So far, the little T509 has absolutely LOVED pairing with anything bluetooth, the only hiccup came with mp3 files as ringtones but there was a workaround for that so it's not really an issue, just an extra step.
I just wanted to ask everyone here since everything on T-Mobile's website caters to the IM and Email crowd, and not so much the web-surfing-while-paired-with-an-internet-tablet crowd.
Thanks for the info Arjun! I'll see what I find out hopefully in a week or two!

I haven't had the time to read through this entire thread, but I can say that the Nokia 6133 works via BT DUN with the 770 and the 800. Note this is with the $19.99 or $29.99 internet plan. I have not tried to get it working with the $5.99 t-zones plan. The phone is decent, has EDGE and a QVGA screen.
I have an 800 and use this phone quite a bit, it was a snap to setup with out-of-the-box settings on the n800. My co-worker has a 770 and uses this same phone, not sure if he had to adjust any settings on the tablet or not.

with the help of another member of this forum, I have been able to pair my T-Mo T-509 with my Nokia 770 and exchange files, etc. I have not yet been able to use the phone as a modem. I only have a voice plan with T-Mo. However, from reading this thread, it is suggested that there is a way to use the phone as a modem. I am going to try the suggestion in this thread.

jonsoini,
Thank you for a very clear and concise answer to my question - which t-mobile phone will work with the N800.
I am now off to buy the 6133. I am not in search of a fancy phone - just one that will work with EDGE.
Thanks.
I think a new thread needs to be created and MONITORED so that only entries with the working Bluetooth config's can be posted ie:
Service Provider Phone 770 or 800 Data Plan/Special Service

Just want to update what I did. Today after reading that the Nokia 6133 works - I spend the day changing from my blackberry 8700g and got the 6133. I changed plans to include the $29.99 T-Mobile Internet and $4.99 for 400 Any messages (text or video).
After receiving countless Error messages indicating I needed to subscribe to GPRS service first -- I am finally connecting.
I don't know if the error message had to do with the need to wait for it to activate as I was told by a level III t-mobile staffer or the fact another told me to change the Access Point name to internet2.voicestream.com from the default entry of internet.
After I made this change it worked.
A speedtest indicated I am getting 148 kbps download and 66 kbps upload from the T-Mobile service.
I am a very happy man - total connectivity (as far as t-mobile can take me).

;) Internet Plan and Voice Plan are really two different things. I had a T Mobile $29.99 'Voice Plan' till last month. I could use my Nokia 770 and my ( then Nokia 3650 ) phone, to get on to the Internet easily with this. Please see that I have mentioned that I had a Voice Plan only.
Recently I upgraded to a $39.99 'Voice Plan' (changed my phone as well, to a Nokia 6682 ) and I can still get to the Internet the same way.
So, I think that if you can pair you v3 RAZR phone to the Nokia IT and then configure the DUN on this setup, you can get to the Internet with a simple 'Voice Plan'. Remember that the time allotted to you by the Voice Plan that you subscribe to, will be used up while you surf the Internet using the Phone as a Bluetooth tethered Modem. :)

The phone that I use ( right now ) to get to the Internet when Wi-Fi is not available is a Nokia 6682. I do not know whether the fact that your phone is the Samsung T-509 has anything to do with the issue of it not working for you. I bought my Nokia 6682 phone ( on eBay ) brand spanking new and totally unlocked. I have the $ 39.99 Voice Plan from T-Mobile. It gives me 600 minutes / Unlimited nights and weekends. It does not specifically mention any involvement of any kind of Data Plan whatsoever. Before this ( like last month ) I had the 300 minutes ' Basic Plan ' from T-Mobile which was $ 29.99 without the unlimited nights and weekends. I used this with an unlocked ( I unlocked it myself ) Nokia 3650 Phone.
The settings I use for this kind of connection is as follows:
Access point name: wap.voicestream.com
Dial-up number: *99#
User name: leave blank
Password: leave blank
After I flashed my Nokia 770 with latest Nokia OS, I have left all the following blank, as default. I do not use these settings now.

Ajun,
thanks for your reply. Used your settings with no luck. Connection manager shows that I am connected to the phone with data being transferred and received. The 770 then gives me an error box called "File Download" which states: "File type: blah blah, File size: blah blah, Location: blah blah (the web address I am trying to connect to), Open with: no application to open with"
Quick question:
when exactly in the process of trying to connect do you dial the *99# on the phone? Whenever I dial it, I get a message stating "Please wait, network activity" followed by a message that says "unable to process request"
anyone have any ideas?

The *99# " is not a number that we dial personally. It is the part of the DUN setting used by Internet Tablets.
Anyways, I have a question for you. Using your Samsung T-509 phone can you go to the T-Mobile Website ( T-Zones and all that) ? If this is affirmative then I will still say that something is not being setup right somewhere. Also, initially when I configured the Nokia 770 to acces Internet ( via Bluetooth DUN) I do not set up T-Mobile as my service provider. I simply decided to go with ' no service provider ' option. ;) :)

I can indeed get to T-Zones on my phone (I only have a voice plan, though, I do not pay the $5.95/mo for web).
Can you tell me how you access the setup screen on the 770 that allows you to set up T-Mobile as service provider, or, in this case, set up the "no service provider" option?

:) This is an option that you get the first time that you are about to configure your IT. In this option you can either select a Service Provider or not select any. As for me, whenever I flashed my Nokia 770 with newer OS Builds, I never bothered to select T-Mobile as my Service Provider.
So lets try again:
First of all, pair your samsung T-509 to your Nokia 770 and make sure that they are set to ' pair ' without asking. Also, in the ' Control panel ', when you hit the ' Phone Icon ', you should be able to see that your Samsung T-509 is recognised by the Nokia 770.
Now.....
Go to ' Control panel ' ,
then, go to ' Connectivity ',
now go to ' Connections ',
Select ' New ',
in ' Connection Setup ' hit ' Next ',
Select Connection name ( mine is T-Zones EDGE ) :D
In ' Connection Type ' , Choose ' Packet Data ' and hit ' Next ',
For ' Acces point name ' select ' wap.voicestream.com ', you can
also try the ' internet2.voicestream.com ', name.
in ' Dial-up number , type in ' *99# ', hit ' Next '.
Hit ' Finish '.
And we are done.
Now, when you hit the ' Connectivity Globe ', on top right of the Nokia 770, it will ask for your phone ( if the phone is not set up correctly ) otherwise it should connect normally.
While we are at this, go to www.T-Mobile.com and to their support site. From there, have them send in, the various setting for your phone, free thru SMS. Perhaps it would solve you problems. ;)

SUCCESS! I don't know what I did different, but, after many attempts using Ajun's settings from this thread, I am able to connect to the web using my T-mobile Samsung T-509 and my Voice only plan!
I am getting download speeds of up to 156 kb/sec according to PC Pitstop's download test. Pretty slow, but, hey, no monthly fee for 'data' from T-moblie. If I find I'm using the phone as a modem often, guess I'll spring for the $29.95/mo internet plan and get EDGE speeds (of how fast?).
Thanks for your help,

Well, I got my N800 last night and decided to give this a try now. Pairing is being a little weird as it's showing they're connected, but I can't see any files or anything on the T509 from the N800, even though I know they're there and it shows the folders that contain files (Images, Sounds, Videos). Internet isn't working either with it but I also have the $59.99 family plan. This was more just for fun and sort of a just-in-case type of thing, nothing serious. I'll keep playing with it and see if I can get anything going.
N800 & 770 both worked for DUN with my T-Mobile Internet ($19.99 plan) on my Nokia N73 phone right out of the box - the file browser works from either Internet Tablet to the phone also (as the 770 did previously with my Nokia 9300).

The Blackberry 8100 (Pearl) will definitely NOT work. And probably any Blackberry will not work.
Do we know for sure this won't work? I know the Blackberry's don't "officially" support DUN, but I've been able to use this feature with my Pearl and my MacBook and MacBook Pro without any problem. Of course, I did have to download a modem script specifically for the Pearl, which may be why the N800 won't work. But what kind of error did you see?

On the t509 you actually have to go in to the File Manager and individually set the "Share for Bluetooth" in the options of the item.. such as an image in "My Pictures".
They will not show up until you do that...

Is there a similar log on the N800? I've searched all over for one.
I've tried setting the extra AT commands and playing with the APN and username settings, but to no avail. I've also manually edited the AT commands in this file:
/var/lib/gconf/system/osso/connectivity/IAP/T-Mobile@32@Internet/%gconf.xml
Hopefully someone else (more experienced than I) can try hacking away with all this info: http://www.maemo.org/platform/docs/howtos/howto_connectivity_guide.html

Does anyone have the Tmobile US $29.99 Internet plan working with their n800 or 770?
Yes, I got it working.
I first signed up with Tmobile Web and was able to ssh via port 8080 to my linux server at home. Unfortunately a week later my access was revoked and I could only web browse ( I couldn't tunnel through http or ssh). Alas, I subscribed to the $29/month plan and all is well.

Thanks for your help,
Neil
Here's a follow-up post. For some reason, I can no longer get online using my phone. When I select the T-mobile internet setting I was using successfully before, the connection manager says I'm connected and data is transferred and received. However, web pages won't ever load. I even tried deleting and re-entering the T-Mobile Internet connection to no avail.
Any idea why it stopped working?
Neil

Tmobile is doing some wacky stuff with port access to control what people are doing with the internet plans (and to close off the free internet people have been getting for a while). See howard forums for more details.
If you are buying a phone for use with TMobile, make sure it will support their longly delayed 3g network, as the Edge speeds are painfully slow and make me want to punch myself repeatedly in the face while loading pages.

I'm in the same boat as you. Just did an entire morning of web searching and have successfully gotten my 8100 to tether with my mac but havent had any success with the n800. I suspect the same thing you do, it could just be as easy as getting a specific modem script on the n800.

I had this exact same problem, and could not get it resolved through Nokia’s tutorials, or by using any of T-Mobile’s OTA updates. I now have stumbled across a solution, purely by trial and error, and would like to share what finally worked for me. The following assumes that you have already successfully paired your N800 with your mobile phone.
In the N800’s Connectivity Control Panel, click Connections, then New [or edit your existing connection to match], name the connection “T-Mobile Internet” , and set the connection type as “Data Call”. Click next. Set the dial-up number as “*99#”, leaving all other fields on this screen blank. Click next. On the next screen click advanced. On the advanced screen click the Other tab, and in the Supplementary AT Commands field, enter “at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet3.voicestream.com”. Click OK. Click Finish.
Back at the top menu bar, click the globe icon, then select connection, and choose the connection you have just created. At this point the globe icon will begin blinking a phone icon right in front of it, and after a few moments you should see “Connected to T-Mobile Internet” in a pop-up window.
Hope this helps!
