Hi everyone,

I've been annoyed by this fact so much that i decided to write about it on a thread FOR THE FIRST TIME in my life. Why is it that on the N900 i cannot turn up/down the volume when listening to music with the phone locked? it's really annoying that i have to take the phone out of my pocket, unlock it, turn it up/down, lock it, and then put it back into my pocket. I'm certain there's no application so far to solve that problem but could anyone come up with an app that lets us turn up/down the volume without having to unlock the phone?

don't think it's possible with wire ear phones. But it works will bluetooth headphone.

You can set it up so that a single press on the power button will enable the volume buttons when the screen is locked.

You still need to press the power button and then the volume button, but that's still simpler than going through a full unlock, and it prevents accidental volume adjustments.

This was how it worked on the first firmware that shipped, but it's been disabled for some reason...

See this thread:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40746

Or just follow the instructions qwerty12 posted there:

Replace both instances of the string "tklock_mode_ind" with "tklock_m0de_ind" in /usr/lib/hildon-desktop/volume_status_menu_item.so

This will restore the old behaviour, with the exception that you can't actually see the volume slider on the screen anymore (when it is showing the "slide to unlock" screen, that is). The buttons will have no effect when the screen is off.

Works like a charm :)

Yay for regressions!

Seriously, at least the power button + volume was better than unlocking the phone + volume.. Wtf Nokia?

I'd prefer keylock that locks out all the button. Get a headphone that has volume control on it.
There's one on sale today, check out the Sony DRBT22 Wireless Stereo Bluetooth 2.0 here: http://www.dailysteals.com/

Hi,

I can't control the volume when listening to an internet radio station via the browser. In that case the volume switch (rocker top left) zooms in/out the browser window and in most cases the volume slide on the respective web page doesn't work either.

It's just another half-baked thing on the N900.

Cheers.

Paul

To be fair, how would the N900 know whether you wanted to zoom or whether you wanted to change volume? Anyway, you can change the volume while in the web browser by clicking on the status area.

There's a bug (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8011) for that and it's been marked as FIXED, so we have to wait for next firmware update, just.

For instance, when the headphones are plugged in and when the flash player plugin is receiving data from a web server.

Even in those circumstances you might equally want to zoom rather than change the volume. Lots of web pages have active Flash content, e.g. for adverts and navigation, and the N900 cannot read your mind to know whether you should zoom or change volume. Maybe there should be a toggle between the buttons zooming and them changing the volume.

Of course, in the context of this thread, while the phone is locked it obviously only makes sense for the buttons to change volume, not zoom.

+1

i guess i'm lucky that i have sennheiser cx500 - it has a hardware volume-slider.
but i'd like if you could assign functions to the volume-keys when the device is locked - changing volume or even skipping tracks.

- changing volume or even skipping tracks.
This is what I'd like to see. Long press on volume up/down to switch to next/previous track, probably. Would this be possible? I guess it won't be in the firmware, but can user applications handle any keys while the phone is locked?
