View Full Version : So much for Ovi?

In the last few months I've been working to get prismic wallpaper manager (http://www.iolitetech.com/products/prismic-wallpaper-manager) through to the ovi store. On the whole, Nokia has been fantastic, but increasingly I've heard all sorts of interesting things from other developers experiencing similar issues, and more concerningly, a lot of talk about there not being a paid app store any time in the near future...
Needless to say I'm starting to feel like I'm going to miss my chance here if these things continue getting pushed back and surreptitiously delayed. I have invested far too much time and money just to let this one go.
So does anybody know how to allow people to easily install .deb files without having to use the terminal? I would very much like to get this $3 sensation on the road, and I know everyone else would too....

the new update v3.2010.02.8 allows file manager to click on deb files which opens application manager and installs deb....

Why not release the app first, so poeple can use it then if it works they may include it on ovi.

Maybe with the Application Manager
But who knows .....
Edit:
Sorry, didn't see this is a N900 thread.

Ah hah! I haven't gotten around to installing v3.2010.02.8 yet, so when I tried it just failed miserably. Maybe there is hope afterall...

Just put it online. The browser will take care of the rest. It seems to be the way OVI Store works - just installed the Angry Birds Level Pack from OVI.
I Think you have to update to the newest firmware to make it work.

dpkg -i MyDocs/.documents/filename.deb

No ovi repository is already setup in application manager thats why you can click on links and install

Yeah, while waiting for a new feature in the app manager, you can write a tiny python/qt app for installing deb files. It's work for one hour :)
You'll have to use terminal only once.

Are you sure it is using the OVI Repository for paid content, too? I was asked if I want to save 'angrybirds-levelpack1_1_0_0_armel.deb' to disk or open with App manager.

i thought u meant directly install from browser, if you downloading deb from browser then the OP might aswell connect phoen to pc and transfer that way.
off topic, are the new maps good? :D

The only officially supported way is via the Application Manager. You can use maemo.org extras/non-free, or create your own debian repository for example.

paid content as started being put up again in n900 ovi store so it might be as long as you think before we see prismic in there.
With the newest firmware, paid applications should work, so I hope you'll manage to put Prismic into Ovi soon.
It looks like a nice app and your price point seems fair.

i have just come over form o2 to vodaphone. i went to buy the new level pack for angry birds £3. im no iphone fan boy but my friend got all the maps about 3 times the number we have for 59p.
this is all going to balance out as it is open source and there is going to be loads of free stuff. now $3 for the OP's App, hell yer that looks nuts and looking forward to getting my hands on it.
i dont understand why angry birds level pack 1 is £3 when the iphone has the same game with all 3 level packs for 59p

The phrase is "economics of scale" - when you're selling to several million Apple fanboys, you can afford to charge less than when you're selling to several thousand N900 users.

yes, also...when you only presenting one game/app to buy...the price will be high...er.

i understand the economics of it but thought they would maybe release the full game for £3 not just another level pack.
if this stays the same price i will have paid £6 for the full game that is a massive jump from 59P. in fact its nearly %900 increase if im correct i cant see how that can be justified
anyway we digress :) i would definately pay the price for Prismic it looks really good. its these types of apps or projects that i would like to see coming to the n900

I've just paid for Prismic, but only recieved paypal reciept and no instructions on how or where to download the app.... :(
Have contacted them...awaiting response.
EDIT: Had another look on the paypal receipt screem and there was an option to 'Go Back to Merchant'. Once i done this the download started.
Bear in mind if you don't have the latest firmware update (or live in the UK like me and don't want to flash device) then you will have to install the deb file using x terminal.
I'm playing around with the app at the moment and it looks very neat and tidy :) Cost me £2.50 and paid via paypal so i'm a happy man :D
@Neegs: basically that number (price x expected number of sales) should be around the minimum value to make it worth their while.
Btw, angry birds on iPhone for 59p ($0.99) is on sale. Normally it's around twice that ($1.99).

ps: yep, i'm an iFanboy.

yes and you either pay it and play it or don't. that's the way money rolls in the world.
e: someone can afford to pay $20000 for it, someone afford $0,02 and someone $5. if everyone can afford it, we are already in utopy...

no idea. probably not as well as it could be (based on my faint memory about my rootfs status from earlier today).

Is it opt-ified?
Yes - it installs to /opt (except for the desktop entry, icons, and dbus service - all very small), and data is written to /home/user/MyDocs/.prismicwm

Just bought, installed and used.
A very nice app! :)
I've been waiting for this for some time, and kept checking n900wallpapers.com, for the release of the app.
I can't believe that at this time, Nokia _still_ doesn't have a working app-store ? That's just insane.
If Nokia's lack of commitment, or support for an app-store is holding back applications, I can't really feel sorry for them , if they are losing market share.

Do Nokia have a blog outlining up and coming apps/games to the Ovi Store?
