Is it possible?
I just read about it from this site :

there's insufficient info so nobody knows. you should know the core functionality of the app and then we'd be much wiser.

Very interesting. I ve heard about it again in the past, I think that it' s already exists for symbian. Forgive me if I'm wrong.
Yeah it exists (http://gallery.mobile9.com/f/1216483/). It works on devices with integrated gps(n900):D:D

It uses built-in compass to work, couldn't find more info about it.
Anyone wanna try it out?

I'll try digging for more information on the subject.

Problem is the metal detector apps use the phones built in Magnetometer(Digital Compass) to function. This is also a piece of hardware the N900 doesn't have.
Can't be done.

It works well on Android. But since, I think, it uses the compass, it cannot be done on the N900.

Is it confirmed that it uses the digital compass? what about non-magnetic metals?
could it in fact be using the microwave transmitter/receiver?
edit: just wanted to update that we know that these apps aren't serious or could actually do a useful job - but it's just interesting to know the phenomenon

What about the magnet that reads if screen are open or closed?
Can't you hook it and read the values or something? (im just brainstorming)

the guys grom offscreen made it.
They made many simple apps for the N900 already.
Why not mailing them to ask if they will port their app to the N900?

Has this gone any further? It should be possable using the fm transmitter and reciver on the n900 as you can find some simple metal detector designs on the net one is as simple as taping a calculator to an am radio (am though not sure if it has to be)
Surely the interferance from the radio could be used as a measurement? I have noticed when driving my car that whenever I drive close to large metal objects it gets worse most notaceable is water of couurse, I get massive interferance driving past the public swimming pool! ;)
