I Started working on a Star Trek theme and I decided to throw up a teaser shoot of the first background to see what people think. I have had some say its to busy and I should go simple. I might do two wall paper packs with this theme.

Desktop Screenshots will be up tonight.

Nice work but I'm inclined to agree with those that have already told you it's a bit busy. Would mate a good lock screen image though where there are no icons/widgets

Do you think something simular with less stuff would be good or something totally different?

I would suggest something more calm and epic, like this one (http://galaxyofwinkingdots.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/star_trek_03_10241.jpg) (just general reference)

I'll work on something more calm for wall papers but I think I will find a use for top one took hours to do hate to waste it.

Looking forward to a Star Trek theme! I kinda like the idea of a 4-screen panoramic battle scene for the desktop, but I also think it might be too busy and might not work well with a bunch of icons and widgets. Space scenes with larger ships or planets like hopbeat suggested would probably work better, or even stylized faction logos (Federation, Romulan, etc). Examples:

i like the examples above and am looking forward to a star trek theme. I have installed the star trek type system sounds through app manager and they are cool. But the themes themselves didn't really work that well for the N900 so am looking forward to something specifically for the N900.

Looking forward to seeing the screenshots!

Personally, I agree the background is too busy. For my old LCARS themes, I tried to make wallpapers that looked like something you might see on the computers on the show... i.e. more diagrammatic. Here are a ton of examples (http://memory-alpha.org/en/index.php?title=Category:Memory_Alpha_images_(disp lay_graphics)) of graphics from the shows/movies. Here's an image (http://homepage.mac.com/michaelokuda/.Pictures/Photo%20Album%20Pictures/2008-02-17%2023.35.21%20-0800/Image-9AFD08C8DDF311DC.jpg) from Michael Okuda's portfolio (http://web.me.com/michaelokuda/) (the graphic designer who created LCARS).

The static/non-animated panels (i.e. most of the computers in the shows) were actually color gels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_gel) cut into various shapes and lit from behind. Thus, most of the graphics consist of solid-color cells and lines, usually separated by some black space.

edit: Also, if you're going to have a bunch of ships in a battle, it looks kind of odd to have them all firing simultaneously.

I agree, you should also consider various nebulae and perhaps even more than one wallpaper set.
Either way my point is that the darker the theme, the more annoying it gets in direct sunlight.

Nice work, but too busy. Hopbeat has a good suggestion, above.

Has anyone ported the existing LCARS PADD themes from N800 to the N900?

You can not Port themes you have to rebuild from scratch. LCARS designer does not want to do it so I'm trying to do one but another theme took me away from this for now.

The idea is great, I'll be one of the users of theme! :) Will the backgrounds be panoramic (i.e. continuous, wrapping around)?

New Plan is going to be a basic Star Fleet Emblem as Background by default. I will also include the loopable ship battle background as well with it or in seporate package.

Great news. Any ETA on when it will be ready? Can't wait to see and try it.

would it not be possible to have an icon set / widgets based on ships that could be moved around on a space bacgrond

It would be possible but icon sets take forever to make since you have to make so many icons. I don't do many icon sets anymore I'm starting to reget doing some of the ones I'm doing.

BTW I am basing my theme off of Maemo4 LCARS Bridge.

Well, it's not that I don't want to, I just don't think it's going to work as well with the current UI layout as it did on previous Maemos. I figured the Okuda theme (also Trek-inspired) would be more feasible (and I actually kind of prefer that color scheme anyway) so I decided to start with it. But I've hardly had any time to work on themes for the last few months, so it's been coming along slowly.

I may try to adapt the LCARS themes to Maemo 5 eventually, but since I don't really know if or when that will happen, I certainly appreciate Andrew's efforts.

Ian, I presume that I must have your theme installed that has all of the sound effects but none of the wallpapers as they don't look right?

Umm, I'm not sure what you have installed... I haven't released any themes for Maemo 5 yet, and you can't install my old Maemo 4 themes on an N900. (Or at least, you shouldn't be able to; I haven't actually tried, but if they did install they certainly wouldn't work right.)

I did try installing our old lcars-sounds package on my N900 from the Diablo repo, and that seems to work... But it's not a theme, just sound effects. In general though, installing packages from the non-Fremantle repos on an N900 is probably a pretty bad idea.

Yep, that's it. I have the sound effects installed. I love the little noises.
