Hello:
I'm trying to get started compiling something for the Nokia 770. I've downloaded the scratchbox files from maemo.org. I'm following the tutorial for version 2.2. I installed from tarballs since I'm on a Mandrake system, rather than debian. I can log into scratchbox but cannot extract the rootstrap, so I can't get very far. First of all, all of the URL's on any version of the tutorial seem to be broken, so I can't get the rootstrap that way. I did manage to download this file from somewhere on maemo:
Maemo_Dev_Platform_v2.2_armel-rootstrap.tgz
In scratchbox, I start sb-menu and get as far as the "extract rootstrap" step. I select the Nokia as the target and then the rootstrap file, which is in /scratchbox/packages, as explained in the tutorial. The message I get is: "Failed to extract rootstrap", followed by the full pathname of the file. It gives no reason for the error. Since scratchbox installes as a virtual distro, I thought there might be someting under its /var/logs directory, but no luck. I have the feeling that I have missed some step. Quite possibly the tutorial is incomplete, the writer making some assumption that a newbie wouldn't know. Please help!

Found the solution; it was a file permission problem. For some bizarre reason I didn't have read permission for the rootstrap tarball. I've now run into another roadblock, which I may post under a different thread.
