IMAX 3D was quite an enjoyable experience.

And I generally hate movies in 3D.

We saw (some of) avatar at the cinema - walked out after an hour was so bored.

Might have been an idea to have spent a little less on the effects and employed a script writer.

(Wont be buying the dvd!!)

The script was the usual heavy-handed, one-sided crowd-pleaser that level of investment demands. the technology was wonderful to watch.

This was too good! Thanks for the link, fatalsaint!

Yeah, a trivial enough story, but I loved the visuals.

What's even more promising, with a beginning like that, Avatar can have many exciting sequels, all based on highlights from American history ;)

Wait..."Avatar" is a "movie"? I thought it was just a series of test images to properly calibrate your TV? Especially the blue levels.

3-D version is supposedly slated for next year sometime.

Sorry but after 1 hour of nonsense i couldn`t be bothered with it, the cinema here is on a retail park/shopping centre and to be honest there was just more interesting things to see and do outside.

Sure the effects must be clever/good, but after an hour i`d taken the glasses off and had enough.

I loved avatar. I loved the 3D effects, but I also loved how it portrayed humans as almost nothing but destructive and wasteful creatures... Scenes of the Navi burying their dead by a tree and 'giving back', and lines like 'humans killed their own mother/home, and now theyre here to take ours' really appealed to me...

The Navi and their lifestyle is pure awesome.

I pirated it.
So it was essentially free for me.
But I was still angry at myself for wasting resources on it.

Can't get the 30 or so minutes I spent watching Avatar back.

EDIT: The Word for World Is Forest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Word_for_World_Is_Forest) for people who want a SciFi allegory for exploitation of nature and aboriginal people. Written by Ursula K. Le Guin. Basically same story without vomit inducing amount of cliches and terrible dialogue.

So you watched it in your 3D theater?

No. You didn't see the real Avatar.

For an equivalent experience, watch Lawrence of Arabia on your N900.

Avatar was very impressive in the theatre, but the dumbest most cliché filled and most predictable movie I've ever seen. I was very entertained though.

@leetut Kickass FTFW! Now THAT is one movie with an appropriate title!

Hear hear!
Watched Avatar TWICE in IMAX 3D and I know another nut who went TWELVE times.
Anyway... I am going to get that Blu Ray, baby. Apparently it's one of the best visually mastered Blu Ray's to date picture quality wise.
Note that I am not getting the current Blu Ray though.
Fox is milking this franchise out as much as they can, so the only Blu Ray available right now is the movie without any fancy extras. I love extras!
Shame on you Fox!
I am waiting for the real deal when they made enough money on those who couldn't wait and bought this one anyway.

My mates have been telling to go watch it in 3D and only in 3D, Imax if possible. I wonder if it's still on or if I missed my cue..

Another recommendation comes from the censors in Beijing. :p Apparently they cut its already limited run short to make room for a less popular Confucious glorification drama, and banned it completely from Tibet. I wonder if has to do with the premise of the film being colonial exploitation of peaceful aliens...

Maybe actually make movies about American history.

I was excited when Avatar was released before I heard about the plot.

Never saw it. Will treat it in the same contempt as Titanic.

I'll wait until it appears on the telly.

The important question is - "Would you hump a blue alien?".
Never stopped Captain Kirk.

The story was no different than..

Dances with Wolves (Instead of Avatar, this should should have been called Dances with Blue People)
The Last Samurai
Pocahontas
etc.

There was absolutely no imagination done for the story at all. It was a standard, run of the mill, redone 4 billion times "Big bad company/government/country/whatever going after small local/native/"savage"/whatever". You need look no further than the fact they actually called the mineral they were mining "Unobtanium". Are you serious? That was the best you got?

But, still, I liked the movie. As I liked DwW and Samurai as well. The imagination was in leaps and bounds with regards to the CGI and the world they made, so that somewhat makes up for lack of anything with regard to the story. At least, for me.

Titanic, OTOH, just sucked.

Have to agree that as an exercise in technical film making Avatar cannot be beat, but any kind of story/character development was non existent. It kind of reminded me of playing videogames except I couldn't control the character which made it less fun.

Uh-oh furry alert! :D j/k I'll give you a pass but don't do it again :p

I thought the movie was pretty good, but I have to put it in the "flash over substance" category with Transformers 1&2...the storyline isn't horrendously bad like those two, but it's rather predictable and obviously unoriginal.

I thought Avatar was a technology demo. Usually they last around 60-120 seconds. Avatar lasted over 120 minutes.

Who can guess if I was bored?
