View Full Version : Forum doesnt support n900 resolution?

Im finding it very difficult to navigate through very large threads on this forum using my n900. Once a thread gets bigger than a thousand or so posts the navigation links seem get pushed out of their layer.
It would be a shame if it were not possible to browse the maemo forums perfectly with a maemo device. Is there a trick I am missing here?

Mhm. I find that bad, too. I change the theme for such threads, but its still annoying - especially as I tend to get lost with themes I'm not used to.

same problem here. I just have been too lazy to complain earlier...
if you check the url thats being loaded, after you've swapped to a different page, you'll find page=xxx at the end of the url.
manually change it to whatever page you want and press return
but yes, the frame doesn't fit any of our microB browsers

If they simply could put together "prev" and "next" links, and then page numbers...

when your in a thread with 1000 posts, where you need the next/last buttons, type this into the address bar and press enter..
javascript:var d=(document.body.style.minWidth="1050px");
it cheats the webpage into to thinking its on 1050px screen and adjusts there after.
Edit: BTW. it can be bookmarked.

Thats definately a very neat trick. Its not very practical though.
I think rearranging the links would look weird for the majority of the threads. Maybe the First, Prev, Next & Last links should be on their own line?

I've had a thread regarding this which came up with a workaround. Use that java script with greasemonkey. (although i have still yet to get grease monkey working with microb)

a simpler way is to swipe in the cursor, lock it somewhere on a post, then press the right arrow key.

If you guys are talking about the main theme its not designed for the n900 that is what minimalist theme is for.

wow. this i didn't know and it works very well.
i still would love to be able to change the browser virtual width permanently though.

Yes that would be great, as i play a browsergame, that does not work in any n900 browser because important controls are left outsight the visible area. Even the bookmarklet does not work, as it does not rearrange the site :(

try the cursor lock n scroll trick. it works on a few sites when i'm missing bits, althugh you may be sacrificing important bits from the left of the screen to reach controls on the right...

minimalist is horrible, then suddenly the text of the post are bigger, i dont want that i just want better/bigger navigation.
besides that theme's are stored on the server with yout account so suddenly the selected theme is also used on my pc.. It should be stored in a cookie..

I have to confess I didnt realise that existed. The minimalist theme works a treat. Its how i will view the forum from now on.
That being said I had to resize the screen to select a theme from the drop down!
EDIT-I changed theme via User Control Panel rather than the drop down at the bottom of the screen like a normal person

The classic light and dark themes also work fine, and has smaller text then minimalist.
Classic themes are build like classic forums.

well. if u need to change the virtual width, just use the javascript for that page. easy. would much prefer thid to be set permanently but seems it's not easily possible unless someone makes a plug-in or extension for the microb. any volunteers? hehe

you design themes for certain devices/browsers? that's a creative approach... oh, no, wait a minute, we already had that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Markup_Language).

Although Im having fun with Andrews minimalist theme I think you have a point. The rest of the web works fine with my microB browser. T.M.O is an odd place for it to be noticably less than perfect.

I hate how if u change the these at TMO to something inferior, I have to put up with it on my PC also. Changing theme defeats the purpose of a full pc-like mozilla browser that we have on our N900.

I'm always looking for suggestions on ways to fix minimalist theme if its so horrible, and no themes are stored in a cookie if you use the theme selector on bottom of site. If you change it in user CP then yes its saved on server works that way on every vbulletin forum.

Hope you don't take it personal Andrew. Minimalist theme has no problems. It's what it states it should be so it's good. I just like the main forum theme that's all as it is more full featured and i prefer it both on pc and N900.
oh. i didn't know about that theme selector at the bottom of the site btw. learnt something new. =)

I didn't design the main theme I just designed the minimalist one because the main one didn't work well on tablets. Also its designed minimalist more of the data usage and speed rather then the browser/device. Personally I feel that the site would work if right side menu was moved and active topics could be hidden.

Just wanted to add you most likely have your font size set to large or extra large on your phone. I have a new minimalist version in the works because alot of people use that setting. I keep my font size set to normal so it seems rather small to me.

I'd like to see "Previous" "First" "Next" "Last" before the page numbers if anyone is listening. This would provide the best functionality for me on the N900.

Surely this isn't actually a problem with 'viewing on the N900' at all - it is a bug in the theme, when the website is viewed at that resolution - this would also occur on netbooks etc.
Screenshot of TMO using Firefox on my EeePC 1000HE:
http://mattaustin.me.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/tmo-bug.png
As you can see in the screenshot above, the problem with 'Next' and 'Last' links being hidden is also occurring on my netbook.
Rather than all these workarounds/javascript bookmarks, the theme needs altering/fixing, no?

I'm a bit puzzled here...
Nothing personnal here but if I understand well :
1) Everybody knows about this bug
2) One SuperMod made extra theme because (also) of this problem
3) Still, all supermods don't "bother" reporting bug to the one they know can fix this
4) We are talking about the "Official" Theme of the "Official" Web site
I know this is a community web site but from the investment done in upgrading the hardware I would have thought that one would bother fixing this old and annoying glitch...
I'm just puzzled by the idea of developping a whole workaround theme rather than fixing the main one or creating a bug.
Really...

Wow. That was quick.
The problem still exists though as atz noticed. When there are page numbers of more than three digits I think there is only room for three "page number" links.
Is it possible to have this logic?

I always access the Subscriptions page as my main page for TMO. It's quite badly broken on the N900 due to it not being optimized for low resolution of 800 pixels wide.
Can TMO be set to a width of 1024 or something when a web browser with referral of 'N900' is seen? or some specific referral such as "1024 N900" or something. (then I won't have to try and somehow get greasemonkey working with the javascript)

You don't really think I made Minimalist theme because of the numbers running over do you? Minimalist theme has been around years before we even know what a N900 was, years before current main theme, and well even before t.m.o. Minimalist theme was designed to contain no images and to decrease download size for cell connections. When the minimalist theme was created we all had N8x0s.

Wonderful. Thanks a million.
EDIT: Looking at that thread I notice that the Last link can still be pushed out under worst case conditions. I find that no big deal though as there is still the Go to Page menu.
It doesnt look broken at all now which was the niggly thing for me before. Nice work.

Just want to point out another solution for this problem, posted the same thing at an another thread. Zoom out a bit, not a lot though, and press on the CTRL+Shift+i buttons. This should kinda reformat the layout of the page a bit to adjust to the zoom level, leading the navigation links to be shown properly.
I'm posting this because on my phone the links still don't show up right, so i'm guessing other members might face the problem after the fix. Also, this solution works with other websites as well (for example check this site out on your phones http://www.cinestarcinemas.com/English/Default.aspx, some elements are overlapping, but if you zoom out, they go back to their right location) so i think it's a handy tip for n900 users to know.

- I noticed that CTRL+SHIFT+i does not work on recently leaked fw.
- I also noticed that this method (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=629004&postcount=11) no longer works in leaked fw.
However, I not have greasemonkey installed and setup with MicroB and it works perfectly to make MicroB's virtual width larger for TMO and a few other sites I need. (so instead of 800 pixels wide, MicroB shows TMO at 1050pixels wide which means I have to scroll sideways also but at least TMO looks identical to my PC now)
The minimalist theme isn't the answer to my prayers on this subject either:
http://media.share.ovi.com/m1/s/2050/b8dba159a0b64d4f9984b423ddf4fbd9.jpg
I think the N900 stands somewhat "anti-mobileoptimized sites". So its ironic that maemo.org should be a site that doesn't sit well onto the N900 screen.... :)
