Due to the growing number of map repositories that are compatible with Maemo Mapper, I decided to create a thread that would aggregate them and keep them up-to-date.

To use one, tap-and-hold on the link and copy the link address to the clipboard, then paste it into Maemo Mapper. Many of these repositories are also available by simply selecting the "Download..." button in the "Manage Repositories" dialog box in Maemo Mapper itself.

The following is a set of working repositories that you can use for Maemo Mapper:

P.S. As soon as I can figure out MIME on the 770/N800, I will release a version of Maemo Mapper that will allow you to click on a link to set up a repository, so you don't have to copy/paste the URLs. Kinda like the .install files for the 770/N800's Application Manager. When that feature is added, I will add links to the above post to allow you to do that.

"proj" stands for "projection" and it is a command-line application that Maemo Mapper uses when it needs to transform from one projection to another. It is only needed for WMS repositories (like the Terraserver one), because they use a different projection from the others.

You can install the proj package from the same repository from which you installed Maemo Mapper. Here is a link that will install it:

1) What do I use in place of the "..." in the above URL's? If I leave the "...", I get an error message in mapper.
The "..." is just a side effect of the forum's display of URL links. Just tap-and-hold a URL and copy the URL to the clipboard. Then paste into Maemo Mapper.

2) Will I get the same Route, regardless of the map url I use?
Yes; the downloaded route is dependent on the URL listed at the top of the "Download Route" dialog box. (It is usually never changed.)

Gnuite, cracking update!

Do you think ViaMicelin maps will upload - they are cartographically pleasing on the eye and easy to glance at to check progress on a journey

here's a link and an example of the HTML script:

<script src='http://www.viamichelin.fr/viamichelin/int/jsp/map/netLink.jsm....' type='text/javascript'></script>

Also from the other week I have had some joy in extracting the MSR MapCruncher (http://research.microsoft.com/mapcruncher/) derived tiles and restoring/naming/filing them with shell script from the XML file, but as yet only for small areas ~ 15km x15 km; it slightly mandraulic, but I will tidy it up.

I realised that I should have posted that here. Anyone any idea whether a URL can be deciphered from the above for Michelin Maps? - they have good coverage of Europe....

Ta.
Not without making modifications to Maemo Mapper. I investigated ViaMichelin's website, and its PNG files are accessed using complex, encoded URLs that look something like this:

http://m1.viamichelin.com/mapsgene/dm/mapdirect
;d29yXzAwMjRt;MDAwMDAwMDAxMjAwMDAwMDAwMTA=

The part after the semicolon presumably identifies a bitmap (254x254 pixels, which is weird). Now, the website uses javascript, and although it's heavily obfuscated, in theory the algorithm for generating one of those identifiers is buried somewhere in that javascript code. The same algorithm could be used in Maemo Mapper to translate between lat/lon and ViaMichelin's codified ID, but I'm not really motivated enough to sift through the mounds of javascript.

By the way, if you ever come across an online map that you'd like to use in Maemo Mapper, I am always open to the possibility of adding new types of URLs. All you need to give me is an easy way to map a Maemo Mapper coordinate (x, y, zoom) into the URL. Most URLs have their own quirky style of encoding, some of them more obfuscated than others. For example, Google Maps Satellite uses a qrst-encoded quadtree URL, whereas Virtual Earth uses a 0123-encoded quadtree URL, so the code in Maemo Mapper to handle each is similar, just tweaked slightly for each source.

Firefox has this great utility for spying on exactly what images a website pulls in. For example, go to Google Maps and use the "Tools | Page Info" menu item in Firefox. The "Media" tab contains a list of all media pulled in by the page, including images. In the case of Google Maps, there are a bunch of "mt1.google.com"-style URLs that reveal exactly the URL format that Google Maps uses to retrieve its bitmaps. This is how Maemo Mapper first came into being.

Back in the olden days, MapQuest didn't even have an AJAX-ified website, so you couldn't use the "Page Info" trick used for Google Maps. Nowadays, however, MapQuest uses a completely different URL format. When you use Firefox's Page Info tool, you see a bunch of URLs like "http://tile3.mqcdn.com/map/Scale29337258/0/5/0/2.gif", where "ScaleXXXXX" maps somewhat to Google Maps's "zoom=" variable, and the "5" and "2" map to the X and Y coordinates of the map.

So, it might be possible to write an algorithm that translates "5, 2, 29337258" into Maemo Mapper's "x, y, zoom" format. Unfortunately, I think MapQuest uses a projection other than Mercator, and the scales don't cleanly match between Mercator and MapQuest, which makes it difficult, perhaps even impossible, to use in Maemo Mapper. It just takes some investigation...

P.S. kempja: would you mind removing the "script" code from your post, or at least break it up into smaller lines? It causes the page to render poorly in most browsers.

HI Gnuite,

Would it be possible to use the Mapquest "Routing File" in mapper?

The reason I ask is that I have done some routes in mapper (same as Google Earth) and Mapquest.
"For me", the Mapquest routes are much better.
One of the routes I did in Mapquest is the actual route I take to pick up my grandchildren from school.:) Again, I stress "for me".

Thank you!

joeo, I couldn't agree with you more. I too prefer Mapquest's routing algorithm to Google's, although I prefer Google's interface. If I could parse Mapquest's directions HTML page into a GPX file, trust me, I would, but I haven't found a way to do so.

The route points themselves may be somewhere in the javascript, but Mapquest seems to have done a very good job of hiding them, plus there doesn't seem to be much connection between the route points and the direction information (e.g. "Turn Right at ..."), so even if I could find the route points, there wouldn't be any waypoints.

Google Maps's maps, on the other hand, are much more easily parseable.

Have cleared it up; is that any better?

Thanks for the tip about Firefox; I am now using it to investigate another new map server over France, serving IGN Maps.

I have just about finished the cmd scripts that read the xml file from MapCruncher, available herehttp://research.microsoft.com/mapcruncher/, even for big (50 x 50 km), overcoming a max xml file size of ~100 lines - it extends the quadtree to the max zoom level crunched. I just need to join the scripts together and write some instructions. The results are as almost as accurate as the VE tiles on which they were 'pinned' ~ +/- 5m at 1:25k, showing no discernible stretch to go form UTM to VE's TM projection (although I can reproject using another programme - it's just a pain)

I will make this available after the w/e, if anyone is interested.:D

Could you help me in defining the repository information for the following map site:
http://www.freemap.co.il/map/

Using the above-mentioned "trick" it seems that the tile URL's are pretty straightforward:
For example:
http://www.freemap.co.il/map/tile.php?map=israel&t=-336128&l=366080&s=30000&g=all&i=png24

First, thanks Gnuite for a great program.

I ran across this (http://www.multimap.com/) mapping site today, and it looks like they use an easily-parseable URL format, but I'm not sure about the actual body of the page - there's a fair amount of javascript, but it doesn't look too complex.

EDIT: There's a link at the top left of the page that takes you to the "Old Site" or "New Site". My comments above are for the "New Site", but the old one might be easier to parse.

Gnuite, I too have had a look at this site - Multimap.com. The new site is working on 256x256 tiles and they are mercator projected, like VE and GE. Additionally they have UK topo 50k maps (similar to USGS ones availble from Terraserver); most useful for hiking etc.

The urls, from Firefox, of the image tiles are thus -

http://mc0.multimap.com/ptiles/map/mi841/13/213131/312000.png?client=public_api&service_seq=14458 for Topo

http://mc3.multimap.com/ptiles/map/mi801/13/213131/312013.png?client=public_api&service_seq=14458 for route/street maps

They seem to be some sort of quadtree, but referenced from bottom left rather than top left. "13" is the zoom level, with map type being the "mi8**".

Any ideas for a URL to go into MM?

Cheers
Kempja

First of all I have to admit that for the past few months I did not really think MM would live up (for me) to the hype it generated in other parts of ITT (and other sites) -- mainly because no maps cover the area where I live in any detail. Plus, I don't have a bluetooth GPS. However, yesterday I downloaded it and spent more time playing with MM than I should have (I am currently during my "exam season" at University :))
In any case, I have two small quibbles:
- Most of the time, when I fire up the "Manage Map Repositories" dialog, I find that my list of repositories has been doubled (e.g.: Rep A, Rep B -> Rep A, Rep B, Rep A, Rep B). This behaviour is consistent and seems to happen every time except for the first time I fire up this dialog in a MM session. If I click cancel, the doubled list is not saved.
- Google satellite repository stopped working about 5 minutes ago :( What is happening is that it either leves a black space or uses the Google street JPEG's. Yes, the maps are downloaded in different directories :) This happened after I played around with the repository settings ("Download Zoom Steps" and "View Zoom Steps") a bit. MM does not complain about the maps not downloading or anything. Weird.
- I will be going abroad in a few weeks and would like to make decent use of MM. Is there an easy way of downloading all the JPEG's, at particular zoom levels, for an entire selected area? Or do I have to stay going around the whole area at every zoom level?

Thanks for any replies!

I've never seen this behavior - you're not pushing the "Download..." button, I presume...

Did the dialog always behave this way, or did it happen after a certain (or uncertain?) event? If the latter, I would try using the "Reset..." button in the dialog and/or gconftool-2 to clear all of your Maemo Mapper settings.. (If the dialog has always duplicated, then this won't have any effect.)

Weird indeed. Did your repo settings get changed during one of the duplication bouts you mentioned earlier? Are you able to fix the problem by tweaking the repo's settings?

Check your repo directory and see if you can find any text files instead of JPEG files. They won't have a text-file extension, so they may be difficult to find. If you know how to use grep, then you can grep the files for the string "<html>". If you find any, the error message contained therein may give a clue to why the repo is messed up. Some users have done this and found error messages indicating that Google has detected them as a "bot" or spammer, in which case Google might have started denying you satellite images. (I don't think this has ever happened with Google's street maps, and I also don't think that the Satellite repo has ever returned Street maps before.)

Use the "Manage Maps" dialog, which allows you to download or delete maps for your current repository. See the Help file for more details.

Gnuite,

Take a look at this French website; the tiles appear to be organized in Mercator Lat/Lon, but with an alpha-numeric referencing system. The Topo maps and imagery are top notch though.

Image tiles are like this:

Also found this http://thepochisuperstarmegashow.com/projects/#geopochi2 a tool that reads the tile into GEarth; would it be of any help, since this guy has cracked the tile naming convention?

The finnish NLS topo maps at kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi use finnish KKJ coordinate system, so MaemoMaper would have to do on-the-fly warping of the tiles. Perhaps MapCruncher is the way. Here is quite detailed description of the KKJ coords (you can extract also some conversion code): http://www.viestikallio.fi/tools/kkj-wgs84.php#KKJ-PI
BTW, stitching can be automated by e.g. montage utility from the ImageMagick suite.

I have been download and install "map cruncher" program and sucessfully create map with that.
It makes 3 folders and 3 files.
<DIR> Layer_Newlayer
<DIR> Legends
<DIR> SourceData
<FILE> MapLayers.crunched.xml
<FILE> SampleKey.html
<FILE> SamplePage.html

How-to make files (directory structure and filenames) Maemo mapper compatible.

lhanneus
07-27-2007, 07:09 AM
A part of answer is :
For reference, Maemo Mapper uses the exact same tile structure as Google Maps. The directory structure itself is defined as "map_cache_dir/zoom/x/y.jpg". For example, file "map_cache_dir/12/5/10.jpg" maps to "http://mt.google.com/mt?n=404&v=w2.999&x=5&y=10&zoom=12". So if you can figure that out, then you can produce maps that will work in Maemo Mapper.
By the way, Maemo Mapper also supports PNG, or any other format that is recognizable by gdk_pixbuf. The names of the files must have the .jpg extension ...

I hope it'll help you.
If you find a solution, please help me.

Does someone knows what is tile stucture of map cruncher?

It makes all files in same directory.

Finnish NLS has also a WMS-service (not public).

See http://xml.nls.fi (in finnish only). It is little tricky but possible to create your own cascading WMS server (for example with Mapserver (http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/)) to serve MM compatible maps.

I have used following "unofficial" EPSG code both on server and client side (see epsg file in proj package) to convert NLS-maps to MM compatible WMS-maps:

<54004> +proj=merc +lat_ts=0 +lon_0=0 +k=1.000000 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +units=m no_defs <>

More information: Overlaying Mercator Projected WMS Layers on GoogleMaps (http://johndeck.blogspot.com/2005/09/overlaying-mercator-projected-wms.html)

It's working pretty well.

I recently bought my 770 and I was anxious to use the maemo-mapper application. I do not have a bluetooth gps yet (in the mail), but I wanted to become familar with it first just downloading a few maps. When I start the program all I have is a black screen. I have typed in several map repositories and tried to download maps without success. It says that it has downloaded the maps, but nothing shows up on my screen. I am not a hacker by any means, but I think I can follow directions. Is there something obvioius that I am doing wrong? What should be on my screen when I first start maemo-mapper? If I put in a route by typing in two nearby cities I see a green line with a few waypoints, but everything else is black.
Thanks fo your help.

Try the Help file in Maemo Mapper. There is a "Quick Start" tutorial that should help get you started. Let me know if you still have problems.

Gnuite,
Thank you for your response. When I hit the help button while in the maemomapper program, I see nothing. Nothing happens. What I think is the help screen is open, but I can't see it since my screen is black... I am going to make sure that I have the latest os for my 770, but I thought I checked that when I first fired it up... Could I have the wrong version of MM? There were so many. Do some not work with 770s?
Thank you,

Update Maemo Mapper to the latest version (1.4.7). You can do this via the Repository Manager, assuming you installed Maemo Mapper via that mechanism, or you can just click on this .install link in your Nokia device's browser (http://www.gnuite.com/nokia770/maemo-mapper.install).

Let me know if you have any issues with this.

I have successfully installed Maemo Mapper 2.0.3 and read loads of things relating to Maemo Mapper.

Is there a way I can download the tiles I want from VE Streets or Google and then convert them into a file that Maemo Mapper 2.0.3 can read? I assume that if I do the download on my PC, I need to to convert the jpg tiles that Winmapper into a database file.

The alternative seems to be to just use version 1.4 but I'd rather not do that and downloading directly to the Nokia 770 is very slow.

Can anybody help?
Thanks.

Hi everybody. It seems I'm not a lurker anymore, but there was a lot to read :) so I'd like first to thank mapper developers for such a cool app.

Everything ran fine in my brand new n800, from installation to the use of WMS Terraserver repository (I also installed proj.). So, I tried to add a pair of new repositories from two well-known local wms servers

My plan is to use Spanish cadastral maps ( layer for properties, identification numbers, adresses, etc):
http://www.catastro.meh.es/esp/servicios_destacados1.asp#menu5
(apart from detailed data, this link includes a pdf with examples getting maps from wms)

and Sigpac maps (Spain digital ortophotos) within maemo mapper.
http://sigpac.mapa.es/fega/visor/

At least in Spain,
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Potential_Datasources#Spain
they cover many areas better than google satellite and, even much better than, VE satellite:

At Goolzoom http://www.goolzoom.com/ you'll see a gogglemaps mashup using both of them, catastro and sigpac.

But there, I got stuck. As in Terraserver example, http://www.terraserver-usa.com/ogcmap6.ashx?VERSION=1.1.1&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&LAYERS=DRG&STYLES=&SRS=EPSG:4326&BBOX=%.6f,%.6f,%.6f,%.6f&WIDTH=256&HEIGHT=288&FORMAT=image/jpeg&BGCOLOR=0xCCCCCC&EXCEPTIONS=INIMAGE
I managed to get an image but I cannot translate it into a request to a wml server to add a new repository within maemo mapper:
http://ovc.catastro.meh.es/Cartografia/WMS/ServidorWMS.aspx?&TIME=&REQUEST=GetMap&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&LAYERS=&STYLES=&FORMAT=image/png&BGCOLOR=0xFFFFFF&TRANSPARENT=TRUE&SRS=EPSG:4326&BBOX=-8.874914646148682,42.54291567704111,-8.862243890762329,42.54632250820751&WIDTH=1179&HEIGHT=429&reaspect=false

When I try to get a general URL to get an answer from WMS server changing some data (BBOX and WIDTH or HEIGHT, keeping in mind there are different EPSG codes) I got lost (I'm just a map lover, trying to follow some other examples got frm community) I got a blank screen or it fails to download maps.

And same happens when I tried with Sigpac or as in this example with Sitga (Galician Sigpac)
http://ideg.xunta.es/wms/request.aspx?&REQUEST=GetMap&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&LAYERS=ortofotos2003&STYLES=&FORMAT=image/jpeg&BGCOLOR=0xFFFFFF&TRANSPARENT=TRUE&SRS=EPSG:4326&BBOX=-8.876953125,42.54498667313236,-8.87420654296875,42.54701017547381&WIDTH=256&HEIGHT=256&reaspect=false

Any tip to come unstuck?

Thank you!

Gnuite, I too have had a look at this site - Multimap.com. The new site is working on 256x256 tiles and they are mercator projected, like VE and GE. Additionally they have UK topo 50k maps (similar to USGS ones availble from Terraserver); most useful for hiking etc.

The urls, from Firefox, of the image tiles are thus -

http://mc0.multimap.com/ptiles/map/mi841/13/213131/312000.png?client=public_api&service_seq=14458 for Topo

http://mc3.multimap.com/ptiles/map/mi801/13/213131/312013.png?client=public_api&service_seq=14458 for route/street maps

They seem to be some sort of quadtree, but referenced from bottom left rather than top left. "13" is the zoom level, with map type being the "mi8**".

Any ideas for a URL to go into MM?

Cheers
Kempja

Anyone had any luck with Mulitmap yet ?
I'm really keen on getting something that would be good for hiking.

Excellent software by the way. Especially with all the different map types that can be selected.

Thanks,

Could some body help port eniro's excellent maps to maemo mapper.

Eniro has operations in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Poland. So it would help many users

http://kartat.eniro.fi/ - Finland
http://kartor.eniro.se/ - Sweden
http://kort.eniro.dk/ - Denmark
http://mapa.pf.pl/ - Poland, looks like different engine for time being atleas
- Norway doesn't seem to have maps yet.

In some countries eniro has also very hi resolution areal photographs in 4 major directions ! (north, east, south and west) they have been supplied by Blom Aerofilms photography and digital map solutions. They have this thing called Pictometry navigation. Check out amazing video on their website
http://www.blomasa.com/en

Simply astonishing, working 3D navigation system !
Could it be possible to maemo mapper and eniro areals used like 3D Photonav?

I just took a look at the above map links.

probki is not google map compatible system, totally different.

Interesting thing is that eniro indeed uses the same google map numbering system to name its tiles, but its whole map tiles are arranged around Stockholm, including service for other countries!

So the central tile with Stockholm at its center is always (0, 0), toward east x goes 1, 2..., west -1, -2, etc.

It's possible to rip its tiles and translate them into google numbering system. But its map tiles is not 1 for 1 match with google tiles. There is a goe position shift for every tile, because google doesn't put Stockholm at the center of the tile. So the software has to be changed to incooperate that offset, or you force the mapper to a particular location with the new lat, lon values, it has that capability.

I know, but it's system uses lon/lat, so any gps program can use it very simple.

OTOH, probki.net is the _best_ map of the St.Petersburg (with very frequent updates) and one of the best maps of Moscow.

P.S. I remind you, the population of St.Petersburg is about 4.5 mln, and Moscow - about 18 Mln. And I know, some of these peoples uses Maemo :-)

I added a weather overlay to the list, courtesy of Scott Dier. It puts colored pixels on a black background to give indications of rainfall. It's limited to the U.S., but it's cool nonetheless.

In the future, I may add support to Maemo Mapper for overlaying multiple repositories on top of each other - it might be cool to see a weather overlay on top of, e.g., OpenStreetMap's map.

I would love to be able to see UK Ordnance Survey Landranger maps in Maemo Mapper.
These maps look like:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=446500&Y=246500&A=Y&Z=3
Where the X= and Y= numbers refer to positions on a rectangular grid for the UK (which can be derived from GPS lat/lon by some messy maths).

Is there a simple way to achieve this directly in Maemo Mapper?

If not, I wrote my own basic GPS application for a Psion handheld computer some years ago for which I fetched a large number of the Ordnance Survey Landranger tiles, each 200x200 pixel tile providing the data for 1km x 1km. Is there a way I could use such tiles, e.g. served by my own private web server from home, with the wonderful Maemo Mapper?

I've tried to find out sufficient detail about the URI format MM uses to fetch tiles, but I've failed to find:
- whether the X,Y co-ords reference the bottom-left, center or some other part of the tile;
- the relationship between zoom factor in MM and scale (i.e. pixels->meters or lat/long displacement)
...am I being daft in failing to see this?

Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Simon.

I'm having trouble with Download in Manage Repositories: it just hangs for ages and then errors. n800, mapper 2.3.1-os2008

I've discovered that this is because it is attempting to download from port 8080 on the remote server(s), i.e. the "webcache" port. This doesn't get through my firewall. Is there any reason why it doesn't use port 80?

Interestingly, when I try to view http:gnuite.com in my Firefox browser on my PC, it redirects to http:gnuite.com:8080, so that also fails.

After closer investigation, the streetmaps images are too far removed from the google maps images :(

however, I've been reading about Microsoft MapCruncher - it's a tool for building custom map tiles for MS Virtual Earth, and by inference, Google Maps. So I'm going to try scanning an OS map, making tiles, and creating a site to host the images. Will let you know how it goes.

See http://www.bdcc.co.uk/GoogleCrunch/Crunch.htm for more info

So I scanned in an OS map, used mapcruncher to plot the coordinates, and put the outputted files on my local web server. Created a new repository, using the URL format http://www.myserver.com/maps/tiles/%0s.png - and bob's your auntie, it works.

I rendered from mapcruncher with a max zoom of 16 - which gave a good image - this equates to a zoom of 4 in maemo mapper. Only real problem may be the amount of data. I did about 1/3 of the Snowdonia 1:25k map, and this gave 350mb of images. Not a problem for me as I have a web server at home, but might be an issue for some.

No problem. I did about 50miles x 50 miles, which gave 1.5gb at zoom 16 in mapcruncher (4 in maemo mapper). Detail was OK on a 1:25k map, 15 would be about the limit for a 1:50k map

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here... though I have been reading this forum for a very long. Recently I have been trying to integrate maps from www.mapmyindia.com into MM. I looked at the repositories and found that they are very similar to googlemaps.

http://map1.mapmyindia.com/mapFiles/map?x=5672.5&y=5425&z=13

I could find 2 differences. First difference is that the zoom value (z) increases as one zooms into maps, where as it decreases for other repositories including googlemaps. Other difference is that the coordinates are divided by 10 compared to coordinates in google maps. I think it should not be too difficult to integrate these maps, any pointers would be very helpful.

Hi gnuite, kudos for all the juicy stuff you've done, Nokia should shower you in freebies at least!!

I am off to Japan next week and somehow did not manage to learn all the Hiragana & Kanji... that means google-maps are a tad less useful to me. From the main repos only Yahoo offers a sufficient set of Romaji place names etc. You offered two repos for Yahoo, "Map" and "Satellite". I am normally happy with just the "Map" but on Yahoo the contrast is rather weak. The "Hybrid" is the map that really works well.

Is there any chance you (or someone else?) could hack up a repo that uses the "Hybrid" of Yahoo? I'm nowhere near code-wise enough to attempt it myself :-(

And if it has already been added, I do apologize for my blindness, and appreciate being pointed to it!

Thanks a lot!!

Unfortunately, Yahoo's hybrid maps work like Google's in that they combine two separate images (a satellite image with a road overlay) on-the-fly, directly on the web page, and as such, there is no single repository that stores the hybrid maps.

In order for Maemo Mapper to use hybrids maps from Google or Yahoo, it would need to be changed to support the concept of multiple simultaneous repositories overlaid on top of one another. It will definitely affect performance in a negative way, but 've been planning to implement it for a while now; I just haven't had the time. Until that happens, though, Maemo Mapper cannot support Google's or Yahoo's hybrid maps. Sorry. :-/

So...If I have Maemo Mapper and install a map repository from the above aviation website...I can track my position on the chart using the GPS on my N810 whilst i'm out and about flying?

Doesn't look good. Here's a sample URL for a tile from skyvector.com:
http://skyvector.com/tiles/tile_35_119_3_10_2.jpg
I have no idea what those tile numbers mean. They may be easy to decode, but Maemo Mapper does not support this particular tile encoding. runwayfinder.com, however, uses the standard Google Maps tile encoding (I think it's powered by Google Maps), so it fits more easily into Maemo Mapper's tile data model.

Got my N810....it's awesome.

I have Maemomapper all worked out aside from this pesky runwayfinder.com - which is my main interest. In this thread Gnuite posted:

RunwayFinder.com
http://www.runwayfinder.com/charts/x%dy%dz%d.jpg
(Note: WMS URL formats requires the installation of proj.)
(Thanks, gregrenda.)

Somebody then asked: What is "proj" - and an answer was given, except it seems the proj file is for the 770. (http://www.gnuite.com/nokia770/proj.install)

If I plug in the above url in MM it downloads the grey tile that says "chart data available forcontinental united states" (which I am in...FL)

Is there any way to get runwayfinder.com working in maemo mapper on my n810. I hope so!

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Mrglass

PS: How do I get the URL myself? I can't right click on the runwayfinder.com site.

EDIT:
I found a "proj" in another forum (the MMv2.2 thread I think) and installed it with success - but alas, nothing seems to have changed - MM still won't grab the map tiles. Still having the same problem.

Speaking of airspeed, there was a hilarious post from about a year ago from someone who was running their N800 in an airplane near the Canary Islands, with a gps add-on. It showed the airspeed and location just fine.

Yes, it's available for OS2008, and it's the exact same version. proj is available in each of the Maemo Extras repositories from which maemo-mapper is available, so if you used a Maemo Extras repository to install Maemo Mapper, then it should be available already in your Application Manager. If not, then use this link to install proj for OS2008:

Wouldn't it just be SO cool if the neat wx radar would overlay the other map tiles when you clicked a button...

Wouldn't that wx overlay be even more useful over the aviation AND MARINE charts, turning MM into the finest marine chartplotter on the planet....witth cellular live updates...

Just dreaming...thanks to all who made MM such a great program....amazing.

Hi..

Yes it only zooms in to level 10.

I get levels 18,17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10

Got to use it last night on a X-country flight....worked an absolute charm! Check the link below for evidence

The guy you see on the flikr link is not me...it's my sleepy instructor. He works hard...so I let him sleep on the X-Country flights.

He was mightily impressed with the N810....Saves messing around trying to unfold a 2ft x 4ft map all the time. I swear that's how all plane crashes occur....map folding.

On the virtual keyboard, there are buttons on the left, one of which is a menu for the virtual keyboard itself. In that menu are menu items to copy or paste. Use the paste menu item to paste the contents of the clipboard into any field in any application.

If you're using an N810, you have to put the hardware keyboard away in order to access the menu, since it is only available on the virtual keyboard. I wish the menu were available via the hardware keyboard....

You are totally correct, the menu is NOT available from the KB, but you can do the following, some tricks I learned here in the forum,

With the physical keyboard slided out, you can press shift+space, the onscreen KB will show up, you can then use the menu.

Copy can be accomplished by onscreen KB, using menu>Copy/Paste.
Copy can also be performed with hardward KB, using CTRL+C (copy) or CTRL+V (paste)

Thanks for the gorgeous maemo mapper, gnuite

Due to the growing number of map repositories that are compatible with Maemo Mapper, I decided to create a thread that would aggregate them and keep them up-to-date.

To use one, tap-and-hold on the link and copy the link address to the clipboard, then paste it into Maemo Mapper. Many of these repositories are also available by simply selecting the "Download..." button in the "Manage Repositories" dialog box in Maemo Mapper itself.

The following is a set of working repositories that you can use for Maemo Mapper:

HI all, first of all thanks for everyone helping out with the development of maemo maps. I just got myself a i-blue 821 gps receiver to add to my N800. Most stuff works great, however I am having one specific issues which I am wondering if anyone else is having.

I am trying to get MM to work with Google Satelite. (http://kh.google.com/kh?v=999&t=%s).
When I try using MM interactively or downloading a region of maps, it will either display a blank screen or tell me that "xx maps failed to download"
I noticed that if I try to bring up the url manually in my browser that I get the message: "we're sorry... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now."

Everything works great for Google Maps, just not the satelite.

I also tried usging winmapper, it tells me that it was successful in downloading from google satelite, however when I go look for the files, they are not there. It works for google maps.

If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.

I am planning to use the satelite maps to track my progress while going on some backroad trails.

Thanks for any help!

This is in reply to Stephan in his older thread How does Maemo Mapper build the URL? (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20439), i think this is the proper place for new repos and i don't like to bump old threads. :) He was wondering how to add the German NRW TK25 topo map to maemo mapper, the bbox format was a bit different from others (e.g. BBOX=2581200,5683300,2581800,5683900)... and i wanted to use it too.

The proper BBOX format is "BBOX=%.2f,%.2f,%.2f,%.2f", this is the url for the Nordrhein-Westfalen TK25 topo map (zoom level 6):
http://www.geoserver.nrw.de:80/GeoOgcWms1.3/servlet/TK25?VERSION=1.1.0&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&SRS=epsg:31466&BBOX=%.2f,%.2f,%.2f,%.2f&WIDTH=256&HEIGHT=256&LAYERS=Raster:TK25_KMF:Farbkombination&STYLES=&FORMAT=image/png

Bavaria TM (1:50000)
http://deutschlandviewer.bayern.de/ogc/getogc.cgi?VERSION=1.1.1&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&SRS=epsg:31468&BBOX=%.2f,%.2f,%.2f,%.2f&WIDTH=256&HEIGHT=280&LAYERS=tk50&STYLES=&FORMAT=png

Badenwürtemberg TM (1:50000)
http://www.lv-bw.de/rdsaccess/default.aspx?SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&ServiceName=t_geo&LAYERS=DTK50K&SRS=EPSG:31467&FORMAT=png&WIDTH=264&HEIGHT=264&BBOX=%.2f,%.2f,%.2f,%.2f

Answer found here: http://hoohol.ath.cx/public/index.php?mode=note&note=noteMM-Extensions (Why isn't that info documented in some easier to find place?)

Edit: adding two more repos for NRW:

The same algorithm could be used in Maemo Mapper to translate between lat/lon and ViaMichelin's codified ID, but I'm not really motivated enough to sift through the mounds of javascript.

that encoding is just two fields in base64:

wor_0024m
00000000120000000010

Nice website. I'd also very much like to have marine charts for maemo mapper. Have used it on the boat with satellite images and they are very helpful. Even saved me from wandering around in a fog bank that rolled in too quickly to escape, and have also used it to good effect at night, but the depth information, channels, etc. would add a lot of value.

Google mashup code won't work. The mapper programs are all designed to work with an ascending hierarchy of 0-3 in each digit space. So 3.gif is level 20 zoom with grid 4 of 4 represented. 1134.gif is zoom 18 (if memory serves me right) and so on. I'm trying to develop a download script, and even I'm having trouble getting my mind around this whole bloody mess. Ah well, at least I don't feel so bad. ;)

Google recently added detailed maps of Israel. Street names are available only in Hebrew. To use, change the URL to:

http://mt.google.com/mt?v=nq.83&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

With this URL, names inside Israel (and the occupied Palestinian territories) are in Hebrew, while the rest of the world is still in English.

I wonder if I might get some advice on changing the default cache db from /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/Maps to my internal sd. I have done so manually in the Manage Repositories dialog, but each time I download new maps they download to the default directory. Resetting also results in the creation of new folders and files at that path. Following previous posts I have copied the Maps directory from the above path to the internal sd card but downloads continue to download to that default path. Is there a means of forcing the default directory without linking the default path to the sd card? Many thanks.

When you say "each time I download new maps they download to the default directory," do you mean that maps downloaded via the "Manage Maps" dialog are downloaded into the default directory? Or do you mean that repositories downloaded via the "Manage Repositories" dialog are downloaded into the default directory?

There is currently no way to change the default directory into which repositories are initially places. But you shouldn't need to download repositories more than once. Repository setup should be a one-time step that you do at start-up and then forget about. And if you back up your settings before you reflash and restore the back-up after you reflash, then your repositories should be preserved.

Gnuite,

Thank you for the clarification. In reading some earlier posts I understood that by moving downloaded maps from the default location to another would force the application to then use that new location as the default. Poor understanding on my part. And after a re-flash my repositories were indeed correct. Thanks again.

What is the meaning behind 'XX maps failed to download'? I have some maps tiles, scanned and cut into 256x256 pixel tiles, in a repo and I am using a .../%d/%d/%d.png structure for the repo. I even have a copy on the SD card using file:///media/mmc1/map/1113A/ etc.
These tiles are visible *when I browse to them!*... but will not 'download' to MM. MM reports 'Processing xx maps" but then fails. The screen remains black whatever I do.
I have tried going to a lat/long within the map tile space but no joy.

Any help gratefully accepted.

PS. These are nautical map tiles which are apparently greatly desired.

proj may be getting difficult to find, since I can't get it into the new autobuilder-guarded repositories. You can download it here:

Question:

Is there any way to run Maemo Mapper on my eee pc?

Failing that:

Is there any know windows (free) program that is similar to MM - that can use GPS to track my progress over a moving map - which ALSO allows me to specify the maps used - such as:

I just noticed that mapquest (which tends to give better directions than google in my opinion) now has the ability to create .gpx files and send them to garmin devices. I tinkered with it for a while and I think there must be some way to get it to send me the .gpx files without actually having a garmin, but so far it keeps wantint me to plug in my garmin device.

There must be some way to get around this. Anyone have any ideas?

2. The URL of the Hebrew names changed, and is now:
http://mt.google.com/mt?v=w2.86&hl=iw&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

And now it changed again: 86 changed to 89:

It seems that Google has recently changed the URL for satellite tiles and labels overlay. Unfortunately Maemo mapper inserts wrong zoom level into the requests, hence it can't get any tiles.

Due to the growing number of map repositories that are compatible with Maemo Mapper, I decided to create a thread that would aggregate them and keep them up-to-date.

and then, voila.... now i could access the maps from yahoo local maps (http://maps.yahoo.com/) :D

I was wondering why the maps take up 5 times as much space than they are supposed to. As I downloaded the maps, it said downloading 0.1 mb, 1.12 mb, 15 mb etc. and when I added it in my head it was no more than 50 mb. But when I go to the map file, it's 250+ mb. Do I have some kind of setting wrong or what?

Thanks for the repos..

My problem (well 2 or 3 problems) is that when mapper does download, I only get the folder structure. No images?
2nd one of folders it creates has special permissions now I can't delete? (I'll have to run as admin to remove but that's a bug I'll try to report)
3rd It's not downloading anything now, it just say "all done!"

What am I doing wrong.

Unfortunately, it would be impossible for Maemo Mapper to automatically download those maps, without code changes. The tile numbering is too King-County-specific.

Maemo Mapper's estimate can vary widely in accuracy, particularly between repositories. Maemo Mapper doesn't know the average tile size on a per-server basis - I just picked a number. Satellite images are particularly prone to exceeding Maemo Mapper's estimate.

So don't worry, nothing's wrong. Maemo Mapper's estimates are just inaccurate.

Google Satellite maps seem to be unavailable, perhaps indefinitely. They don't seem to be very accepting of satellite imagery being pulled off of their servers in an automated fashion, and I'm not inclined to fight that.

I understand, but it could be a kind of scaling matrix or something like that to convert one set of numbers into another, which could be configured in repository info, so if we can match coordinates, we could use the repository. Are these numbers just hard-coded?

Not really. Most tile numbers are referenced from 0 degrees latitude, 0 degrees longitude. King County's tile numbers are referenced from some random point near King County. I could technically add another option to specify the reference point, but since King County is the only website (that I know of) to use such a reference point, it wouldn't make sense from a general standpoint. It would be useless for >99.99% of use cases.

If you feel strongly about it, feel free to modify the source code and make a .deb that understands King County's peculiarities. Or, if enough people care about it, then someone else will do so. That's the power of open source, after all.

I both understand your reluctance to fight that decision, and wish that you would try. Is there some way to get a key for your app that would allow it to have automated access? Is there a bugzilla-style bugtracker that you could submit this to? Are there no strings to pull, no ears to bend?

And as I said, I understand your reluctance to fight this, so if you say "No," it will make me sad, not angry.

As I have already mentioned earlier in this thread, the largest newspaper of Costa Rica has a much more detailed map of the country than the regular Google street map, even though this map seems to be based on Google maps:
http://lnmapas.nacion.co.cr/maps/index.shtml

Sometimes a real good map would be a blessing in this country, where street signs are between rare and no existent.

I have tried to tinker with that map to use it in MaemoMapper, but to no avail. I simply do not know enough about that stuff. I wonder if one of the experts in this matter could have a look on the source of that maps in order to find out if there is a usable repository available.

I could, of course, ask the people at the newspaper. But I am pretty sure that they know even less about MM than I do.

Do you mean Google Street bun?..

No. All googles for the maemo mapper is DOWN for me, including whatever other URLs people are posting, none whatsoever works. I am using the palm/gvm, that GoogleStreetMobile is working like a charm. It is not any mapper, it is a googlemobile app thing. It works. One of the few time, the palm/GVM save my day.

Just in case you have not been interested in palm/gvm before;
On your winPC, google garnet VM beta for nokia, put in your email address, gvm will send you a dl link to dl gvm.deb, very straight forward, dl into your tablet, click on the gvm.deb, it will install via app manager (absolutely NO dependence problem :0) ). somehow on your winPC, go google mobile home>products, there is a map there, dl into your gvm desktop, it is called googlemap.install, click it, it will install googlemapmobile in a few seconds. You are done. Basically it is a map for the mobile phone. I use pocketlink in gvm and dl directly into gvm desktop and click and install. It is very basic, very user friendly, but it gets the work done, give you a route/direction and nearby business. Cant remember whether it works with BT GPS.

Back to mameomapper, openstreet and yahoostreet works. Yahoostreet is, somehow, a lot faster than openstreet, not quite sure why.

If you goin to yell at the Google summer intern for breaking google even before showing up to work, add my share too :-),

munky261:

Google have become very unforgiving about use of their satellite tiles. If you download a few tiles from Maemo Mapper, it will suddenly stop working, and not just in Maemo Mapper, but everywhere from any computer on your home network (sharing the same Internet IP address). So it will seem broken even on Google maps (you'll get the "we're sorry, we have no imagery for this zoom" or whatever the message is).

Thankfully, the ban is only temporary, but they'll gladly slap you down again if you try again.

You need to enable one of the satellite map repositories.

From the maemo-mapper menu select Maps->Manage Repositories....

On the top drop-down box select one of the one of the satellite options i.e Google satellite or VE Satellite or Yahoo satellite.

Click OK.

I've had a look at the google maps javascript and Galileo is hard coded.

Lord Raiden
06-18-2009, 08:20 AM
It may be hard coded, but that's still going to require someone to figure out how to get around that when adding it to a mapping program. I think it's designed to prevent map programs that use single function URL's from accessing it. I don't think they expect to stop everyone, just those who don't have the means or ability to circumvent said anti-leaching technology.

In other words, the bad guys will still get access, but us legit users won't. :( Ah well. Of course, there's a download script floating around the forums somewhere built with Python that could easily be hacked to take advantage of this multifunction URL. Then you'd just run the script and let it do it's work.

The only downside is, someone needs to adapt it to run multiple strings or else child processes, because the way it is now, it's too bloody slow. :( I'm running it now on my utility server and I'm closing on the 3rd day and I've only cleared 650,000 images out of some 6.5 million I need to complete my database. The current valid url is almost unchanged:

http://mt.google.com/vt/x=%d&y=%d&z=%d

The issue now is that the zoom parameter is inverted.
Value 0 shows the entire earth and 17 shows the closest view.
So when maemo mapper try to get a url with z=6, it should be
z=11 (17-6). When mm say z=5, it should be z=12 (17-5), and so on.
I think the only way to get mm to work with this is to modify the source

Using the same trick for satellite as the street maps this currently works for me:

Standard disclaimer on the amount of data Google will allow you to download.

I found some confusion on the scale factor in the URLs it seems that Google have an inverted 'z' parameter that is now used on their web interface, replacing this with 'zoom' allows the standard scale factor from maemo-mapper to be used. Sorry i missed this from my original post on how i got the new URL.

Google also seem to have street overlays for the satellite images from the following URL:
http://mt.google.com/vt/v=w2t.97&hl=en&x=%d&y=&d&zoom=%d
I can't figure out how to get these layered over the satellite imagery in maemo-mapper, anyone got an idea?

Hi,
In firefox you may need to disable the context menu, use the about:config page and ensure the following setting is set false:
dom.event.contextmenu.enabled
Now a right mouse click on the map will give the standard firefox context menu, select the item 'Properties'.

Another way to get the information would be via (menu)->Tools->'Page Info' and look under the media section as this will list all of the images on the page. Click on an item associated with a map tile for the full information.

Give this a go:
http://topo.geofabrik.de/trails/%0d/%d/%d.png
The URL encoding is zoom/x/y maemo-mapper uses '%0d' to identify this geocoding scheme.

The results are not that good as the tiles use a lot of transparency causing problems with artefacts from previous layers and the fact that maemo-mapper uses a black canvas by default.

Lord Raiden

Oy, that's the URL from hell. >.< From what I can see, it's using VE, so since someone else has already cracked the VE for street view, I suspect this one will be easy enough, however, given its unique encoding, it may require an update to MM to make it work. Which brings up another good point. Isn't it about time to add plugin support to MM so that we don't need entire version bumps just to deal with the rapidly changing image encoding standards? The plugins could handle all the translating and MM could then settle on one way to do things, thus making it easier for it to do things. :D

marce_245
07-23-2009, 08:07 PM
So basically what you're saying Lord Raiden is that we can't use this type of url with the current Maemo Mapper. It would be necessary to upgrade the program?. There is no workaround without upgrading?

Lord Raiden
07-23-2009, 08:32 PM
Short answer: No.

Long answer: Right now, no. Because the schemas for converting the URL's are all hard coded into the program. That's why I was thinking that gnuite, the guy who built it, could maybe add a plugin system (or someone else could add it for him) so that it'll make doing schema changes easier in the future, especially since they're changing so fast now.

There's also one other URL that we can't use right now, and that's the Google Maps Satellite version, since the URL is dynamic in ways that would make your head spin. I know Gnuite is aware of them, but I doubt he can adapt fast enough to deal with all the changes going down right now. So for the moment, until some better solution is created, your URL won't work.

Now, something I've been terribly lost on, and I would like ot ask about...

Does Maemo Mapper ACTUALLY DO navigation? Or does it just overlay tracks over an image, which then have to be downloaded or pre-recorded and saved?

I'm asking because i don't want to activate Wayfinder, but I would like a way to navigate if I get lost.

Lord Raiden
07-26-2009, 08:42 PM
It doesn't do actual navigation. Just tracks and routes. It does have POI's inside those tracks with little announcements when you're getting close and where to turn and such, but garmin it is not. However, I took it for a test run today on a trip to Harrison, MI and it did pretty good. It kinda gagged the tablet after running for a while (wouldn't want MM and Canola running at the same time, that's for certain) but otherwise it did good for what I expected it to do. IE, it told me where I was at, showed a little green line (the route) telling me where I should be going, and the rest worked out great. I got to my final destination and back without any hickups. I was even able to take a detour off the main route (shaved several miles off my trip) and pick up my route again on the other side.

As some others here have stated, it's not a full GPS navigation system, but as a navigation reference system, it's awesome. :)

http://mt.google.com/vt/v=w2.97&hl=en&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d
This is the only method that finally worked for me.

Google's cartography is rediculously accurate and that's what I'll need in the near future. So when I noticed that the default settings for this sample didn't work, I started poking around here.

Google maps has proven to be safe enough for me. Maemo Mapper however, has not.
Do not archive the map DB on the boot disk.
Do not layer POIs in the map repository.
At least put everything in MMC2 or something large or things are going to get very slow and ugly. As far as the map storage goes, basically there's two ways to go about this.
Legacy: Fast downloads, maps load fast, the DB is HUGE and appends quickly.
SQL: Very SLOW downloads, maps load fast, the DB is tiny but appends about as fast as a 233 Intel running MSDE. :(

Depending on what you're like the tradeoffs could be the difference between sink or swim. Personally I'm going to use the SQL method until I can add a large memory card to my shopping list. Also, I'm noticing the GPS tracker gets a lock much faster now. I wonder what I was doing wrong in the beginning. :\

daemonforce: MM works good if you want high quality maps. The tradeoff is that you end up with huge DB's and some slowdowns. If you want highly accurate maps, but don't need all the eye candy, Navit works well, although it's sorta in a pre-alpha state right now.

Hi,

I am trying to import maps from www.planplus.rs.

Each tile has the following URL:
http://www.planplus.rs/Services/getimage.aspx?zoom=$level&x=$x&y=$y&orto=0&porto=0
Example points to the upper left corner of the zoom level 11: http://www.planplus.rs/Services/getimage.aspx?zoom=11&x=0&y=0&orto=0&porto=0
The tiles are 250px x 250px
zoom is ranged from (11 to 1), where 1 is most details.

The maps is split in zoom levels.
Inside the zoom level, each tile is identified through x-y integer pair, which does not relate to the X or Y absolute coordinates, or latitude and longitude.

Can you suggest on how to import this map? At the moment I can not identify projection which is used. (it will take some time to perform some measurements of whell known points).

Can you point to the document/url where supported projections and URL substitutions are explained in more details?

Best regards,
Momcilo

I'm gonna defer to GNUite on this one. He's the one who built the program. I think it'll work the way it is, but I'm not sure how to hack the URL. On a side note, this is an excellent example of why a drop in config or repositories file would work best on these. Something that could tell MM how each site works without having to complete reprogram the entire app for each change.

Does anyone know how I can get access to the Virtual Earth satellite images outside Maemo Mapper?

I've found them on Microsoft's Bling thing, but I don't like the interface.

Ideally I'd like to see the images in Google Earth or MATLAB or a GIS package.

Following LES' example of the new URL for Google Streets from June 2009, I succeeded in getting names inside the State of Israel (and also the disputed territories) in Hebrew, while the surrounding states of Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt are in Arabic/English, by using:

http://mt.google.com/vt/v=w2.97&hl=he&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

I created a new repository reference "Google Streets Hebrew" so that I could use either version.

thanks both to Matan and LES

After seeing someone talking about NOAA charts on an iPhone app, I played around and converted some to a slippy map that works on my tablet. They aren't all there, just ones more useful for myself (Vancouver, Canada). Note the usage restrictions. No guarantees I will keep them current. Overlaps between charts are crude, so some data is lost at certain zoom ratios at chart edges (Nautical charts are published in a random mish-mash of different scales and locations, often overlapping, having no relation to the binary splits of slippy maps)

Hi,

I am sorry if I am in totally wrong thread here, anyone knowing a better place for this quesiton, please feel free to comment and tell me where to post this...

I just got a N810 from a friend andI am a total newbie with maemo/Linux.

My aim is to use the maemo mapper for boating here in Finland (yep, summer is over so this is more for next summer).

My plan was to load the local "karttapaikka" maps to the mapper. Mapper itself was already installed.

Installing the maps didn't work out and it actually caused the mapper not to start any more.

So I removed the maps and since it didn't help I removed the mapper as well with the idea of re-installing it.

But now I am not able to install it.
I get this "some catalogues unavailable" message and the details has several lines of
"http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/chinook/free/binary-armel/Packages.gz"
"Sub-process gzip returned an error code (100)"

And still I am able to go to the "http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/chinook/free/binary-armel"-directory with my N810 browser and even copy the Packages.gz file.

I found this:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=199019
And edited the repository list based on Laughing Man's instructions - still not working...

So any help or guidance is welcome...

Cheers...

Anyone know what the current Google Terrain link is?

It's http://mt.google.com/vt/v=w2p.110&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

I just needed it and figured it out.

Thanks guys for URLs over and over again. I've just missed Google Street URL and created one based on alephito's link: http://mt.google.com/vt/v=w2.95&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

By the way, how do you figure out Google's URL for maps?

Lord Raiden
10-16-2009, 11:22 PM
Yeah, I'm with Dozzie on that one. How are you guys figuring this out?

Yeah, I'm with Dozzie on that one. How are you guys figuring this out?

After reading around the forum, the best way to find what the current URL format Google uses is to visit Google Maps, and using either Firebug in Firefox or Web Inspector in Safari/Webkit you can inspect one of the tiles to get the image URL.

As of right now, here's an example of a Google Street Image URL in London, UK.

http://mt0.google.com/vt/lyrs=m@110&hl=en&x=4092&y=2724&z=13&s=

From the query string, we can see the x, y and z params that we need. The other stuff isn't needed. Plus as Google uses multiple servers, we don't need the "mt0" bit at the beginning, just "mt"

So that leaves us with.

http://mt.google.com/vt/x=4092&y=2723&z=13

But it's not quite right yet!

Maemo Mapper uses the "zoom" param instead of "z", as it uses 1 for the closest, up to 17. The "z" value is reversed by subtracting the "z" value from the maximum zoom.

Using the example above, this would mean that:

17 - 13 = 4
The "zoom" value would be 4, which would give us

http://mt.google.com/vt/x=4092&y=2723&zoom=4

Now to convert the URL into the format for Mapper

http://mt.google.com/vt/x=%d&y=$d&zoom=%d

The same approach can be used for the Satellite view.

An example using the same area

http://khm2.google.com/kh/v=46&x=4092&y=2723&z=13&s=Galileo

In this case, we would need the "v" param, the version, but the rest can go

http://khm.google.com/kh/v=46&x=4092&y=2723&z=13

Apply the same with the "zoom"

http://khm.google.com/kh/v=46&x=4092&y=2723&zoom=4

And convert to Mapper URL

http://khm.google.com/kh/v=46&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

So after all that, as of now, here are the URLs

Google Street
http://mt.google.com/vt/x=%d&y=$d&zoom=%d

Google Satellite
http://khm.google.com/kh/v=46&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

Hope that makes sense! :)

I think those aren't "repositories" but are just maps, no?

You should look through Fragos' tutorial for maemo-mapper. (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=24121)

thanks

I had a look at the site, and the map is not generated in the way others are. It seems to use a simple X,Y coordinate based on the level of zoom, therefore there are less map tiles when you are zoomed out all the way, and thousands when zoomed in close.

I tried using the url format of the image tiles, and although it managed to download them in mapper, the map itself was offset by a large amount.

For example, I live in the UK, so my gps marker would give a good indication where I am in the world, and according to the terra map, my gps location was in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, halfway between South American and Africa!!!

Here is the URL format I managed to get
http://map1.terra.com.br/modulos/0.2.1/php/map.php?x=12&y=9&zoom=12

Converted to mapper
http://map1.terra.com.br/modulos/0.2.1/php/map.php?x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

Feel free to try it for yourself, but as I said, the offset is "noticable"!

I wonder if there is a way of offsetting the map to fix this issue.

Hope this has been helpful
