I really do like my N810 and enjoy trying to make it a bit more useful and slicker looking by various applications/mods.
Below are just some of mine that might be a bit harder to find unless you know what you are looking for (maybe they are not in Extras, not that well known, etc, etc). If you got others please do post :)
1) Autoscan
This is in Extras and the only reason for bringing it up here is because penetration/network testing might not be the first thing you think of when using your OS2008 device (N8x0).
http://autoscan-network.com/Ressources/images/Screenshot_Home.jpg
Autoscan is a VERY easy to use network scanner that with a few clicks will tell you exactly who is on the same network that you are connected to. It can be used simply for 'fun' at your local coffee shop..or for more serious investigations should you for any reason have an unsecured (don't!) network at home.
(There are a number of other tools you can use as well nmap, telnet, etc, etc - but for the casual user this is relatively easy and quick way to get into pentesting using your NIT.
2) DragLock
One of the most frustrating things on the OS2008 was the lack of being able to keep the widgets in place by locking them down.
This simple little app fixes that and gives you a 'lock' and 'unlock' option for your desktop widgets.
http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=3766&stc=1&d=1248670976
Easy instructions on how to install DragLock here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=30508)
Note: There is a bug-fix/patch for this, I believe, in a future SSU update but for now this is still the solution for me.
3) HeadPhoned
Ever been listening to music/podcasts and had your headphone pulled out of the device causing you to accidentally share what you are listening to with others?
This simple app pauses the media player(s) when that happens.
Once again, brilliant.
Link here. (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/headphoned/)
4) openNTPD
Is your clock in your NIT off?
Install openNTPD, forget it - and your clock will always be accurate.
Link here (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/openntpd/)
5) SlideLock
So simple, yet so brilliant.
This is a small patch/app you install that will lock your N810 screen when you close the keyboard.
Note that the screen does, by default, lock if you have not pressed any key since you opened the keyboard - this patch locks the screen even if you have used the keyboard. Works flawlessly.
Link here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=19386&highlight=slidelock)
6) Telescope
Application switching never looked so slick before on OS2008.
This wonder of programming is fast, looks good and still being updated with more features. Check it out and I bet you won't be disappointed.
http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=9429&stc=1&d=1272589369
It's in Extras (or Extras-Devel?) but link to discussion thread with photos and videos is here. (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=50689&highlight=telescope)
7) YellowNotes
Maybe the most useful app on my N810.
A stack of post-its on my desktop.
Why this was never promoted to Extras I will never know.
Priceless app.

Link to the thread with downloads. (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=21407)
8) GFrotz
Play your old (and new) text adventures on your NIT.
Works flawlessly!

Couple more for you....
1. Facebook chat is now supported in the built in chat client http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=44050&highlight=facebook+chat. I've only used it a handful of times, but it works as well as any other chat in the IM app. Screenshot of the accounts dialog is below...
2. Now playing Notification utility. This displays a small banner with the artist and track title whenever the media player starts playing a new track. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=45931&highlight=playing+notifier
This is a really useful little utility, useful for having media player running in the background. Screenshot to follow..

This one I had no idea about - where do I get it from and how does it work (only with the standard media player?)?.
Thanks!
EDIT: Nvm, found it in the App Manager.
But, got an error when installing it...but it still installed....
Tried playing a song through media player but nothing shows up and there doesn't seem to be an applet tied to it.
EDIT II: Found the thread where this was discussed and developed: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=45931
Interesting read. Thanks for pointing this one out as I missed it. Will see if it works for me :)

The best one I have that barely got so much as a dim flicker of recognition from anyone, except for maybe like two other people, is Kchmviewer.

Awesome reader, and once a whole chapter loads, it's faster than the Tear web browser when scrolling. :)

Thanks, another one I never heard of...might have to try that out as I got one or two 20-30meg PDF files that I gave up on reading on the tablet due to it being frikkn slow.

I seriously was able to read chapters that were in the 700s without any slowdown whatsoever.
This app is killer!

Another trick - download images in HTML emails when using the built in client (modest).
1. Install Gconf Editor from the extras repository.
2. start Gconf Editor
3. Drill down the tree in the left hand pane to Apps, Modest
4. In the right pane find "Fetch External Images" and place a tick in the checkbox
5. Exit Gconf Editor.
You may need to restart your tablet, but it's been absolutely age since I made this change.
Also, if your email ever stops picking up new mail and notifying, then try this command in xterm
kill - 9 $(pidof modest)

#9 (from me) will have to go to TweetGo.net
Not an app but a WebApp - but such a good Twitter client that it allowed me to give up completely on twitter apps installed on my tablet.

My #10 is another WebApp that removes the need for an actual app for me: Titantv.com
Create a free account there and tie the URL to an icon in your Personal Launcher and you are always one click away from your personal TVGuide with a format that works very well on the NIT.

Not much of an app, but if you have Pidgin installed and never heard of this before, you're missing out.

Makes it so the LED flashes when receiving a new text message.

Just a little shoot out for say some state i experienced...
When you use x11vnc server on your tablet for control and see your tablet on your desktop, you ave some issue when you try click on some area on the desktop...
Yes in fact, in x11vnc server, whit default installation....you got a lot of issue...
in fact this 3 files you need to install for drag lock here
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2639
this 3 files fix this x11vnc in the same time...
i dont know why...but after i installed this 3 files for drag lock option first, i realise my x11vnc its completely worked now...so if you have an issue whit you x11vnc...try to install this 3 files woot
i dont know why...but after i installed this 3 files for drag lock option first, i realise my x11vnc its completely worked now...
Sounds like the packages you installed also include the patches from bug 4225 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4225).

Also, if you get tired of websites bogged down by Flash, you can use the link in my sig to get URLs to more mobile-friendly sites. Or you can use Opera Mobile, which currently doesn't support Flash. :D

I never quite understood why people want to use Flashblock. You can shut off the Shockwave Flash component via the browser.
Tools > Components > Shockwave Flash > Details > (uncheck) Enable Component

Tools > Components > Shockwave Flash > Details > (uncheck) Enable Component
Because with Flashblock you leave the Flash component ON (and all flash is by default now "enabled but blocked").
When you come to a page where you DO want to see a particular flash you just click on the flash logo:
http://browser-extras.garage.maemo.org/news/7/flashblock-acting.png
and Flashblock will allow that one flash to load and show.
I love it.

So far, I'm keeping Microb w/ Flash on and Opera when I need just to quickly surf.

I like having a simple text file for quick reference. Yellow notes was not very effective as a real text editor. So I added the following command to persona-menu and personal-launcher:
leafpad /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/todo.txt
Now every time I press on that button, a file called 'todo' in the documents folder opens up in leafpad.

One note: it appears as if Slidelock (mentioned here) conflicts with Sliderotate. So if you're planning on using both just be careful and maybe do a backup.
If, on the other hand you're already using both successfully I'd love to hear from you as I have not been able to use them both.
I haven't been able to find Autoscan in the app catalog or elsewhere. Is it N810 specific? (I have an N800.)

I would think it would run fine on N800.

Oh and how could I forget to mention Quick Clip (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=28359)
Thanks for the quick response and for the Autoscan pointer. I don't think it's actually "in Extras"; and it's not quite as simple to run as you make it out to be. It does work as advertised; the UI could use a bit more maemo-ization.
That the available Maemo version is 1.40; I guess there's a 1.50 available for other platforms, but the program doesn't make that distinction, so it eats up screenspace to inform of an update that's not really available.

What a great set of enhancements for the ol' n8xx's! Telescope alone makes my tablet seem 2-3 faster and heroes 2 works flawlessly and fast! I'm going to try the community SSU tonight.
I did not see it mentioned but yet - I'm a big fan on conboy (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=28355&highlight=conboy). It's a note taking app that works with tomboy's note format. It allows you to link notes in a wiki-like fashion. What I like best about it is that I can write up notes on tomboy on my pc with links and all and sync them to my tablet via ubuntu one. While I'm out and about I like to take notes and then I can sync them back from anywhere to the pc for clean up. It looks like tomboy for mac and tomboy for windows supports syncing notes to ubuntu one as well (you do not need ubuntu to use the sync notes function).
Here are some instructions (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=652623&postcount=364) for ubuntu based tomboy and conboy sync. Cheers!

I'd also like to add;
a Webhttrack (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/webhttrack/)to the list of 'apps you might have missed for the 770/N8x0'.
I have about 4-5 sites scanned into the app and it allows me to browse the entire sites (with links being active) when I'm away from WiFi but want/need access to the information on them.
"Refreshing" site content is also pretty straightforward w/in the app.
b) I'd re-iterate Telescope as it now also contains a very nice Launcher feature!
Thanks to anyone who keep developing on OS2008.

LBA was ready a month ago :) But there is a few problems: you have to change aggressive mode in options to manual and then back to auto, to hit somebody - press forward and hit buttons. Use the second (http://n8xx.com/post52841.html#p52841) bin, because the bug with fireball was fixed in the second release.
And I can't open holomap. And now, then I have to drop the syrup into the water tank I can't open inventory menu to do it... Mitrandir said he will take a look.
I have no idea about qutIM and icq. When I tried it about 7 month ago it supported jabber as well.
