i have personally completely given up caring if this piece of sh*t update ever arrives or not. i'm now just waiting to see what/if meego brings to my n900.
i've resigned my self to the fact that it is what it is. just wish id known how bad the lack of support was going to be before i bought it.....

Nah, I don't care - never did really. The basis for my not caring is...it is going to make the battery double in size ;o)
Have still got 2x 5800's so might eBay the N900 and use one of those for a bit again. At least I'll have a decent Twitter client again (Gravity)

Based on the leaked firmware, there are many bug fixes coming which makes the device all the more fun to use. Seems more stable with a slight battery improvement.
Don't give up too soon.

Never cared, then on a beautiful day in early May I woke up reading a new firmware was available that was more or less it.
It simply works.
Hardly could believe they had the balls to make Skype Video work or at least show intention to do so.
Still happy with the firmware 1.2 RC, too bad for those who want everything "official"

I don't get it. Why are people such as yourself so stuck up on PR1.2?! Saying that "i'm now just waiting to see what/if meego brings to my n900" just pushes my buttons - it's like having a girlfriend for a few years while waiting for your "princess" to step into your life. Believe me, this relationship must really suck. Same for your n900. Enjoy it while you have it. For me, it does everything I want it to mostly impeccably well, and I take it for what it is AT THE MOMENT!
The update will come at some point, but who knows, it might be late summer, and for people who have purchased their phone in Nov/Dec/Jan 2009/2010 it might be time to buy a new one. If they would all think like you, noone would have been able to enjoy their n900 because they chose to let some downsides ruin their whole phone-experience as well as their life (@ the angry ppl in the PR1.2 Spam Fest Thread).
...and No, I do no care anymore for PR1.2. If it comes, fine. But for the moment I'm really enjoying my n900. Not overclocked, not "pimped". Just as it is, with a few extra gadgets. I suggest you adapt the same strategy, it'll make your life happier.

I don't really care (and never cared), since I'm happy with the current version. Whenever it will be released I will probably enjoy upgrading (there are a few interesting features that I would like to have), but I'm certainly not obsessing over it...life is way too short to worry about such things ;)

I have been using the leaked firmware since the day one. Changes are actually quite small compared to the hype bubble that has been growing for months now. Overclocking (running 1.1GHz) has improved the overal usability more than the unofficial 1.1.2. I'm happy with this RC cause it seems to be quite stable with my usage.
Could Nokia have released this RC at extras-devel repo for those who are eager to test?
cashclientel
05-18-2010, 06:31 AM
I don't understand the PR1.2 hype - it really isn't the be all and end all.
99% of users will notice no difference anyway. If Nokia could have fixed the Ovi store for payment 5 months ago then the N900 may now be a vibrant platform - instead it's dead. (dead = relative to the competition)
bjknight
05-18-2010, 06:51 AM
Cashclientel makes the strongest point.
What is killing the N900 is the lack of paid app support as this has prevented all those who might have created apps to make the N900 an even more versatile tool.
Instead, the linux geeks and hobbiests have been relied upon. Now, those guys have made some fantastic apps for the device and, without them, the N900 would have died a death a long time ago.
Nokia/Ovi may well be keeping us all waiting so that they can get PR1.2's release to coincide with the OVI Store relaunch but there has been no word on this.
I love my N900. I am a geek. That's who the device was for. BUT it is capable of more than the sum of the apps that are available thus far and Nokia is pissing a large proportion of its fanbase off by keeping it in the dark. Enough already.
Tell us when OVI Store will be "fixed" and, if this is dependant upon the release of PR1.2, then at least tell us that.

Personally, I have got to the point where 1.2 is a necessity but Im tired waiting for it now. It's just another thing to add to my general malaise about Maemo and the n900.
In regards to the above points^^, IMO the chance for Ovi store paid apps is reliant on 1.2, and added to that the QT development tools Nokia released to create applications for the n900 are for 1.2. So it's little wonder as we wait for it to be eventually released that any commercial developer interest has passed on by the n900. Will MeeGo wrestle back that interest which was squandered by Maemo, time will tell.
I'm pretending not to care, so they put it out quicker...

im not sick of waiting for pr1.2
have been a nokia user for years and am used to the way the bring out firmware updates.
what i am sick of is the amount of people complaining that it isnt out yet.
do you know how big a job it is to make a whole operating system stable no matter what you throw at it. microsoft still cant get it right with thousands of people working on it for 20 years haha!!!
so just chill, what are people expecting anyway, its rare that you feel like you have a new device after a firmware update, and even then the feeling doesnt last long. let them do what they got to do and be glad that they are doing it.
raily
05-18-2010, 07:22 AM
all I care about is the way nokia seems to have abandoned n900 entirely. It has been said several times by officials that PR 1.2 is coming soon but nothing hapenned in the weeks after that. So it is obvious that nokia has ceased all resources wich former where responsible for the n900

Too bad for those who have 1.2 RC and end up with problems... *chuckles*
I love my N900..its vastly improved since the first stock firmware. The update would be nice but I can wait as I can handle any "issues" I have at the moment...
I do smile when I see threads about people with issues with the RC when they seem to feel victimised for rushing in to something!
No problem with people installing it of course. I just don't feel the need to have an experimental build...! Lots of people find it great, but my N900 is great and the final release of 1.2 will make it greater. We're being made to wait for a reason!

For me, it does everything I want it to mostly impeccably well, and I take it for what it is AT THE MOMENT!False analogy unless you bought your girlfriend from her family or a smuggler or whoever. Girlfriends do not come with a warranty, but fortunately phones do. And with phones it is not unreasonable to expect that the seller/manufacturer will provide some decent service such as bug fixes.
Software engineering is a vaguely defined science, but still there are some industry standards and user expectations that should be met. I am glad to hear that you are happy with N900 as it is. However, there are many users that have to live with annoying bugs every day. They may not affect you, but believe me there are many of us who have lost their data just because PR 1.2 is late -- or because the current firmware is immature...
Bugs that have cost me data loss:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9657
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6882
So yes, I am trying to make best possible use of N900 as it is. And yes, I am no longer clicking the update button every day, but I would really like to see PR 1.2 soon. It would make me trust the device again. Not mentioning application updates that are held back because of the autobuilder having been switched to PR 1.2 weeks ago...

Apparently you care enough to make a thread about it. I care, but I also have friends outside of the gadgetworld. So my caredom is kinda limited I guess. I lose.
I've never cared when a software update will come out unless something is major foobared of which the software N900 isn't.
Yes there are some silly little bugs in it, but it doesn't stop me enjoying my device to its fullest. The only thing slightly impacting that is the fact the QT packages have been removed from the repos so I can't install certain apps requiring QT.
Please stop posting these useless threads now, i'm tired of reading so much sh1t on this forum.

I don't own the phone (think I am waiting for meego) but I think I understand the sentiment of many here. ok so the phone and internet works. yes it is functional. but you paid quite a bit for your device and you expect nokia will honor the money you put in by updating the device.
people like to get updates, it is half the excitement of owning an os, I have been using ubuntu for a year, and they give nice updates on time. was my ubuntu working in 810 version? yes. but it is working better in 10.04. I know we are talking firmware vs os but the point is if you pay $600 for a phone it should not be abandoned by the manufacture in 3 months time.
simply put...you got screwed.

since the update wont come in a close Time i switched the phonecard out of my n900 and use now an old low budget 50$ symbian 40 first gen nokia 2680 and you know what i a full functional mobile phone.
Its really a shame that Nokia isnt able to bring some cheap phone functionalitiys for the n900 like Profiles , seperate Ringtone (maybe mp3 , acc) and so one. And what i really hate is that the voice quality when iam talking on this cheap phone is 10x better than on my n900..
With the N900 i heard allways i cant hear your buddy about the N9 becomes suddenly silent and also i wasnt able to hear the call partner sometimes.. this are known bugs btw..
The N900 i only use at home with wifi for surfing the web or chatting with friends but thats definitly not what i was buying it for.
And now all those fan boys with there perfect n900 and the i dont have any bugs on it mentality sorry guys open your eyes take a look at bugzilla..

im hoping the update brings more app.that is wot is missing on the n900. dont understand why nokia arnet getting more apps for this fone.nokia are on the way out it seems to me,they cant keep up.nokia had its peak in the 90s and 2000s im sorry to say
crown77
05-18-2010, 08:31 AM
@airjaff i wouldnt say Nokia is out at all i guess they just changed there opinion about the Systems. Nokia works now with Symbian 3 and pushes a lot new phones at the market. And now we take a look at Maemo where are 3 devices at all and one is actual (n900).
The next problem is Meego like we can see Nokia is takeing there best Developers from Meamo to the Meego Project. For me we did set on a dead System wich will maybe get 1 or 2 more simple bugfixing updates if we are lucky but nothing more.
And the big screaming will come when Meego isnt able for the N900 about some new graphic features, 4G or something else when it comes in a year or two.

I do care a lot. Sometimes I think that current situation with this update and extras repositiory has been made by big companies who want to stop Maemo and Qt because it's a very good move to turn developers away from this platform.
There's a lot of applications got stuck in extras-devel because there is no Qt 4.6 in extras. FUD makers must become crazy because of this good luck. Maybe it's the Nokia's plan to put them into a mental hospital, but I don't think it will work.

The reason the majprity of these people are fixated on the pr1.2 update is due to the continual upgrade/update/purchase mentality because they have the attention span of a gnat - even shorter.
Like cashclientel said most of the users will notice no difference anyway.
If pr1.2 brought worldwide death and destruction they'd still be shouting for it.
It will come when it has been throughly tested - as it should be.
Mods: can we deep-six all of these annoying/no factual/no discussion/no semi-intelligent argumentative threads?
And as for the "rick-rolling" threads? Just ******ed.

in less then a month i can get a new phone for free. i dont give **** about it anymore.
i patched the n900 to 1.2. I know its not the final version and maybe some more stuff will be fixed but i dont care anymore. Half of the functions are still not working. and im starting to get bored with the open platform thing everyone keeps yelling... yeah sure you can change everything... but who cares??? maemo 5 looks crap and has no descent apps and support.
After the n95 and n96 the n900 will probably be my last nokia. Even when its new it still looks old when its made by nokia... nothing fresh or new is comming out of nokia's hands anymore. Its a shame... it truly is.

Haven't cared in months but I am happy with my phone for the most part. But a lot of people is not going to be happy seeing the PR 1.2 is mainly a bug fixer update not to many cool new features a lot of people think is coming and that's going to be the biggest let down for most. IMO
But Nokia will drop it when they are ready so as n900 users all we can do is sit back and wait for the "magic" to happen.

PR1.2 can clean that applications traffic jam. Or kill this platform if it will arrive too late. I have a lot of fun developing for N900 with Qt and I still hope it will come in time.

I'm super disappointed in the turnaround time for this update.
I had a few issues developping an app during the port to the n900 device itself. I thought, heck dont matter, pr1.2 is around the corner anyways, so i'll just wait for that ... qt is built in and should make my life easier
at this point, i gotta say im considering just quitting the whole maemo thing and developping what i need for android instead... Sad aint it ?
