Since I can't get my Treo 700wx to work with my N800, I would like to know what phones people have gotten connected and successfully used the data connection with. If you could list your phone and provider that would be great.

If I can find a basic phone with bluetooth that works, I'll probably dump my 700wx and just use a basic phone and the data off of the N800.

So, what do you all have that works?

I just bought a Samsung SYNC from Cingular yesterday and it works great so far. It has 3G (HSDPA) and Bluetooth 2.0 which makes it a perfect companion for my N800. I haven't speed tested the connection yet, but it seems to be just as fast as using my 10Mbps cable modem. My friend has a HTC Hermes / Cingular 8525 and has speed tested his connection and consistently gets 1Mbps down / 350kbps up. The theoretical maximum for downloading is 3.6Mbps right now, but is supposed to increase to 7.2Mbps later this year although its probably a moot point as Bluetooth 2.0 only supports up to 3.2Mbps I believe. Their 3G service is limited to most metropolitan areas right now, but when you don't have 3G you get their EDGE service which is reasonably fast, 100-150kbps. I'm in the San Francisco area and pretty much get 3G service everywhere. I would look at their coverage map and see what the service is like in your area.

Amazon has the SYNC for -$25.00 after rebates. Unfortunately, I was on a family plan that didn't qualify for Amazon's rebates so I ended up getting it from a Cingular store for $99 - $50 Mail In Rebate. For the data plan I'm using Cingular's MediaMax 200 bundle for $19.99/month which includes 200 text messages, unlimited internet, and unlimited Cingular Video. Technically you are not supposed to tether with this plan, but the concensus on HowardForums is that as long as you aren't abusing bandwidth (i.e. BitTorrent) you'll probably be okay. There is also a new Motorola RAZR with 3G from Cingular that looks like it would be a good phone for data, but I personally don't like the flat keypad and the ergonomics of the RAZR series. Plus, everyone and their mother has a RAZR.

There are a few quirks about the Samsung SYNC that bug me a little. It's supposedly a music phone, but in order to use MP3s as ringtones you have to cut down the length of the track to approximately 25 seconds. My old Nokia 6230 had no problems using full tracks as ringtones. The other thing that bugs me is that you can't turn off the shutter sound when using the camera, and it's quite loud. Supposedly this was done to most of the newer camera phones to prevent people from taking pictures (2.0MP) from taking pictures of people without their knowledge, i.e. bathroom stalls, etc. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the phone. I generally try to find WiFi spots to hop on to, but if I can't find one all I have to do is select my phone from the connection manager and I've got internet access. Hope this helps, and sorry for the long winded post:D

Hey,

There is a rather extensive list over at maemo.org with lots of phones tested.
http://maemo.org/maemowiki/BluetoothDUN

Personally, I use a Nokia 6280 with my N800, and it works like a charm - took 10 seconds setting it up (pairing) and then it just works straight out of the box. Also it's not the most expensive phone even though it is one of the better ones.

Good luck with your connection :-)

nokia n80 works a treat!

I'll second that. You can also transfer the pictures taken from the N80's camera to the N800 over bluetooth for posting to a blog, etc...

My old Nokia 6630 also worked with the 770, but I've never tried it with the N800.

This being said, your issues may not be phone dependent. Can you make a bluetooth connection from the N800 to the phone? Can you connect to the web with the phone only?

I currently use my Palm Treo 700p as BT DUN with my Nokia N800. I would love to say it works wonderfully but the Treo can be picky at times (every once in a while) as it sometimes requires me to try and connect a few times with the n800 to be successful. Palm's implementation bluetooth leaves alot to be desired. But once it does work, it works well.

Hi,

I have a Nokia 6102i and Cingular. I got it for $30.00 after rebate and contract. I got it not long after I purchased the 770. What I wanted to mention is that I was lost in getting the 770 to log on using a cell phone. So what I did was I called Cingular and they walked me through it over the phone.

It did take almost an hour and talking to a few people, but it was worth it.

I told them I just bought the Nokia phone and I'm trying to send packet data using bluetooth to my portable device. I had already paried them(that was easy).

I had the dialog box already open for the connections. That's Control Panel/Connectivity/connections/edit

I told them the fields I needed info for and they gave me the info. I had already tried using the pre-set cingular info, but it did not work at the time.

The way I see it is, I'm paying Cingular for the data and they have all of the info "somewhere" so they should be able to help.

nokia n80 works a treat!

Same here. So does the Nokia 8801. Almost flawless.

Oh, and Nokia provides scripts you can download to your phone (their devices only) for various carriers, that have the config settings you need (gprs, etc). I don't recall the location offhand, but maybe searching the corporate site will help.

Depends on what you mean by "connect to the phone". I have paired it, and I see it in both directions (phone from the N800, N800 from the phone), but when I try to browse files on the phone (from the N800) it says "Unable to connect to the device". The 700wx doesn't have a way for me to browse across bluetooth that I can see.

yes, the phone surfs the net great on it's own.

Yeah, that's what I think to, but I'm not sure what's going on there either and I've not gotten any response on that question in the other thread for help.

I've had good luck connecting using my LG-VX9800 (the LG-V) on VZW, but it took some hacking on both the N800 and my phone.

On the N800 side, you need to edit /etc/ppp/options to force PAP by disabling CHAP and CHAPv2, by adding the
refuse-chap
refuse-mschap
refuse-mschap-v2
Of course, to do this you need to have root access and a shell; how to do this is well documented at maemo.org; I followed the instructions at http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowDoiBecomeRoot2.

On the VX-9800, things are a little stickier; you need to set the handset to use only 1xRTT. There's a number of Web pages that describe this, including http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=6428545. From the idle screen, you'll click "OK" on the inside keypad to bring up the menu, then press "0", followed by the service code "000000". Press 3 for Network select, press 1 for Mode, choose 1x only, and you're done, so press CLR until you're back to the idle screen again. This restricts the entire handset to accessing the network using 1xRTT, so you'll experience slower MMS and disable some features such as V-CAST video. (Fortunately, it's easy to return to the original setting if you want to use the handset with EVDO again using the same menu.)

Once this is done, pair the N800 and the LG. In setting up the connection, the login is your mobile number at vzw3g.com, i.e., 8885554444@vzw3g.com, and the password is just vzw.

As an aside, I think that this should all work for any Verizon phone on which you can disable EVDO and force 1xRTT only mode. I've not tested it with my N800, but I've successfully used DUN with a Motorola V3C and a Motorola V3M on my Mac OS X machine as well, by forcing 1xRTT mode and pairing like you would normally. I'd imagine you could do the same, by first forcing 1xRTT only mode using the handset's test menu as described at http://forum.osnn.net/archive/index.php?t-80153.html. Be careful, though --- you can really mess up the Motorola handsets if you make a mistake using this procedure.

Bear in mind in present that unless you have an unlimited data plan of some sort, say, V-CAST, which is $15.00/month or some such, your data use counts as minutes used against your plan. Moreover, the carrier contract technically forbids tethering, although it's unclear as to whether that's tethering for EVDO access or any data access at all... your mileage may vary.

Normally I hate verizon, they have crappy phones and lock out alot of features. But I stopped in yesterday and picked up a Moto KRZR k1m for data tethering and some light voice.

All I have to say is WOW verizon's network has extremely fast data. I did some random speed checks with my n800 through out the day yesterday and I was getting anywhere from 465Kbps to 585Kbps. I thought cingular's 3G was fast but it is only about half of verizon's speed.

I am located just south of Boston and the verizon network here is great. Normally I hate verizon and I am a big fan of GSM phones but I can't go back to cingular's slow data.

I picked the KRZR because it supports bluetooth 2.0 and it was pretty cheap only about 50 bucks. The call quality on this phone is pretty bad but like I said I got it mainly for data for both my N800 and Macbook Pro.

treasonx
03-30-2007, 12:59 PM
It isn't really that cheap.

$59.99 tether unlimited data although people do get turned off for about 5 to 10gigs of transfer in one month from what I have read on howardforums

and then the voice plan.

It is rather expensive but compared to just a data card for a laptop its a better deal because you get voice and you can use the data with any bluetooth computer/device. :D

I am going to LA in a week and a half. I'll test the speed while im there. And Im pretty sure I have layovers in a couple of other cities. I will report later on my findings:)

Also pairing with the KRZR was really easy I just had to tell the N800 it was a verizon phone and I was online in seconds.

I think I'll stick with my T-mobile plan. It might be a fraction of your speed, but then again, so is the price. I'm paying 20 bucks for edge right now + the voice. Only problem is, I'm thinking about upgrading to the n800 but it doesn't seem to support my T-mobile Dash.

Tmobile EDGE with a moto v360 was working fine for some slow web browsing or checking email. However, I was really impressed when I was able to download routes and maps in Maemo Mapper over the bluetooth tether. That doesn't seem to need a really fast connection.

THX1138

I think the speed you see with Cingular's 3G network depends on your location. I live in the San Francisco area and I get ~900kbps down / and ~350kbps up when I have full bars. My N800 seems to surf just as fast as if I was at home using my WRT54G router and 10Mbps cable modem. And when I'm out of 3G coverage EDGE is reasonably fast for surfing in a pinch (100-150kbps). For $20/month plus voice plan I am completely satisfied with the service Cingular is giving me. Your mileage may vary though.

Hey thanks for your report on the Verizon phones. I have a question for you, though. Did you actually add the "refuse-chap", etc lines to the /etc/ppp/options.txt file? Or did you just uncomment the lines?

I only see "+PAP" and "-CHAP" in my options file. (those are the lines that I uncommented). Do I need to add the lines that you mentioned?

Just some food for thought. I was at a sprint store yesterday and I tried to tether the n800 with all of the phones they had on display and out of all the phones they had only 2 would tether with the n800 and give me internet access..

They are the moto krzr k1m and the sanyo scp-8400

I am surprised that their higher end PDA phones will not tether. Its kind of a bummer because I would like to have some PDA functionality in my phone.. Oh well.

My N800 works with my Cingular 8525, and my daughter's Alltel RAZR.

It was strange with the 8525. I couldn't get it to tether with just Bluetooth conenctions at first. I could pair the devices, but no tethering. Then I found someones documentation about a program called Wireless Modem under Start-Programs. I ran that, told it a Bluetooth connection, and was able to use the modem.
The NEXT time I tried to tether, I forgot to start the Wireless Modem program, but it worked anyway, and has since. No Wireless Modem required.

I have a Verizon Motorola E815 on which I've enabled Bluetooth DUN (dial-up networking) and OBEX. My understanding is that VZW only officially supports tethering to the EV-DO network through USB (not Bluetooth), so this is perhaps not for everyone. I have the $15/mo VCast plan on my phone.

That having been said, it works very well with the N800. I recently drove about 55 miles with Maemo Mapper automatically downloading hybrid (satellite+map) image tiles the whole way. On the way back, I had Rhapsody streaming music pretty much the whole way with only one disconnection.

Has anyone been able to get the N800 to use DUN on the Sprint Treo 700wx? I just got the N800 a few days ago and upgraded the firmware immediately.

The devices seem to pair properly. When I try to connect to the phone the phone's screen turns on so I know the devices are talking, but then all I get on the N800 is "Internet connection failed. Try again?" I have tried everything I can think of, but can't get past that message.

Here's the only thing that looks wrong. On the N800 when I go to the Control Panel->Phone page and pick my Treo I get a "Device Details" page. The box called "Trusted device" is checked and the "Supported profiles" says DUN (I assume it got that DUN from the phone, again confirming that the two devices are talking). But on that page the "Cellular type" says "none" even though I have selected Sprint when setting up the device. My impression is that my selection of phone carrier isn't getting set properly, but I don't know how else to confirm that.

Can anyone tell me if there is a log file on the N800 that would help me identify the problem? There must be since this is Linux, but I don't have a clue where it is or how to read it.

Thanks for any help. I'm looking forward to being totally free of wireless hotspot hunting.

I was using my BB 8100 (pearl) on T-Mobile which worked right out of the box with the auto phone setup on the N800. but only ONCE. the first time I disconnected was the LAST time I got the pearl to work. I really didnt have time to continue trying to make it work so I went to tmo and picked up a Nokia 6133 which has edge and just works great. I didnt even have to change to the more expensive T-Mobile Total Internet (with side of WiFi) plan to get it to connect it worked while still on the BB plan. Which is great because I can still use the BB for everything else and then when I need the N800 on T-Mo I use the Nokia.

N800 can surf the web via my WIFI network, but no BT via the phone. Going through the control panel/Phone I can see my phone and under the edit menu I see "Supported profiles" is OPP, is this normal? Under the same menu I can see the phones BT address so I'm assuming that phone is talking to the N800, however when I select the phone from the connection menu I see the phone Icon appear as it is connecting, then the bluetooth symbol turns color and then I get the "Connection failed to phone" message. Any suggestions?

has anyone else had recent experience and reconfirm that the cingular/att blackberry curve (8800?) works with the bluetooth/dun for the N800?

thanks!

Alltel ROKR model Z6M failed to answer the DUN call when I got it.

Fed up with Alltel Data Supports excuses, I started fooling around with other connectivity from the N800. I had it paired, very successfully, but it wouldn't connect for data.

The fix was to connect N800 File Manager to the microSD card on the phone, I suppose FTP was the profile. File Manager connected right up and the phone did its double-beep. SIMULTANEOUSLY, this seemed to have woken up DUN! The N800 was connected to the phone's DUN by the FTP call!

It automatically pairs every time to Alltel's great EVDO, now, with no further FTP "wake up calls" necessary.

Anyone with a phone that pairs successfully but never connects might try this trick. I met someone else after I'd found it who had also done it this way successfully.

Maybe our DUN code has a bug?? It never asks for number, username or password....

Hmph... Tried everything I know but I haven't been able to successfully use my Sprint Samsung M300 with my N800. I keep getting Error#67.

Anyone get it work?

I currently use my Palm Treo 700p as BT DUN with my Nokia N800. I would love to say it works wonderfully but the Treo can be picky at times (every once in a while) as it sometimes requires me to try and connect a few times with the n800 to be successful. Palm's implementation bluetooth leaves alot to be desired. But once it does work, it works well.

Same with 755p on Sprint network. First time was toughest, but now it mostly pairs without incident.

The Motorola Q 9h from ATT works great.

The Nokia 6256 works for me on Verizon, but I had to jump through some hoops - I selected "none" on the network setup page, put #777 in the number field, and used "qnc" as the username and password. Additionally, this was a data call, not GPRS.

I tried a bunch of random stuff I saw here and on HowardForums and this combo just happened to work. I think it may be required for Verizon devices that don't have EVDO - or maybe mine was just quirky. Hope it helps someone else out.;)

My MOTO RAZR V3m via Sprint works really well (unlimited data plan required - $39). Paired the phone to the N800, I set the N800 to data call, #777 in the number field and left the user name and password fields blank.

The phone exhibits one quirk, which requires you to turn off bluetooth and then turn it back on again (rarely also requires a power cycle), after using another bluetooth device. Otherwise my N800 won't connect to the phone. It isn't a deal breaker and other than that, it works great.

Cheers! :D

The Nokia 6555 phone pairs up great, and DUN works with no problems, using a N800 and OS2008...

I was actually streaming music on my N800 on my way home from work yesterday...
