View Full Version : Internet Radio as an alarm clock?
Is there any way to make an internet radio station play as an alarmclock?
Would be wonderful having a way to wake up to the BBC world service in the morning.
Thanks

Sounds like you should file an enhancement request in Bugzilla - would get my vote. :)

Just in case anyone thinks that Bugzilla Votes are a waste of time, apparently not (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/maemo/users/19624#19624):
So remember: submitting requests for enhancements in bugzilla counts.
Voting the requests you think that should go first count. Of course we have to deal with many other factors for any single request, but your actions count. Emails in mailing lists with requests are useful too but, you, know, easier to forget. Bugzilla never forgets, this is why it's such a cool tool.
:)
Since I have no experience whatsoever with Bugzilla, could someone else please go ahead and submit it?
And make sure to tell me how to vote ;P

You need to create a bugzilla account -> https://maemo.org/bugzilla/
Once you have an account, you can submit new bugs by clicking the New link - select the correct component (N800 or a specific application) and enter the comment to describe the problem/enhancement. Take a look at some existing bugs to get a feel for how it works.

All talk and no action makes jack a dull boy. :)
This has now been posted in Bugzilla -- let's vote it up!

After some trial and error I succeeded in voting for radio as alarm.
I also added a comment that I would like to see additional function along the lines of scheduling recording of radio so you can listen to it later. I am not sure how best to achieve that. I am thinking of what you are said to be able to do with the Cowon D2.

I voted too and asked for way of setting alarms for specific days rather than everyday or not at all which it is at the moment (I think anyway - mine's with Nokia for repair)

I see this is old. Did it ever get any traction? Seems a good fit and use of the IT, esp. since others are now manufacturing:

The bug report (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1193) has been "resolved as fixed" on maemo.org with a note saying it is planned for Harmattan which I guess is some way in the future. (When is Harmattan due? And it's not even clear it will be compatible with older tablets, is it?)
Shame really as I would still really love this feature and it would give my dusty N800 a new lease of life. But guess we're in a minority. :(

Fremantle should be due in 2009. Harmattan could be due in late 2009 or 2010.
I had the same idea a few weeks ago. I would have really liked to implement this feature into the current internet radio applet but the sources are not available. I have asked about opening the sources on the developer mailing list, the answer was to file a bug request. I have not done it yet, but I will definitely file a request for opening the sources when I have time.
In the meantime I have implemented a rudimentary alarm home applet in python. It needs some bug fixing (e.g. sometimes internet radio is not starting) and I need to package it but I hope that I can release it in the next few days.

<grumble>
Call me cynical, but handling problems and improvement requests by "resolving" them only to be in some future release is pretty much pointless to me.
On my Debian desktop system I can do apt-get update; apt-get upgrade every day, if I want, and get fixes for reported bugs per-package. Not by going from one release to another. I can decide to hold on to what I have for some packages if I want, and upgrade others.
Now _that's_ how I want bugs and improvements to be handled. What does it help me today to see a problem as 'resolved' in bugzilla if it's only to be released in fremantle, a release which doesn't even exist at this point? A release that will probably not even run on my hardware.
As I said, call me cynical. But the way it's now isn't very interesting. 3party developers, though, they are doing things the Right Way: maemo mapper, omweather, vagalume.. they are all upgraded, for existing platforms, as bugs are fixed and features are added.

Now back to fixing problems reported by my own customers.

I leave canola running on the tablet minimized with a song on pause, then when my tablet starts to play the alarm to wake up, canola begins playing that song... wondering if it would work with an internet stream ??

I guess thats a _feature_? ;)
Since Canola uses the mediaplayer to play tracks, this might work with media-player itself on pause as well. Well worth a try.
What I find annoying is that the alarm only plays about 60 seconds of a given mp3, and only repeats the alarm 5 or 6 times.
I'd like the alarm to start playing a playlist, or an internet stream and NOT STOP AT ALL. (ok, it may stop when the battery runs out - duh :D )
fizze, isnt the point of an alarm to wake you up NOW?

I used to use citrus alarm clock sometimes. Now its become comercial, but it used to be freeware. What i liked is that you chose a song and then a time for it to go to full volume. So it would start really low and go higher every second. It was really nice because you avoid the shock of waking up to a full volume song.

eliagp - that's what the current alarm does on the 810. However like fize pointed out it also doesn't play the full track. I'll try the 'work around' mentioned (leaving a track paused in the media player). If it's that close you think someone could take it the next step, rather than waiting another year or two for a distribution upgrade...

Yes, but some of us are light sleepers, and some aren't. I usually have at least 2 seperate alarm clocks, and sometimes I still don't get up in time.
It would be nice if there was a clever solution for this on maemo, that's all! ;)

If only there was someone here who was knew enough to be able to port this to maemo, at least we could do mp3's... ;-)

After looking at your link it would seem to me that because it's a plugin, it might work with the xmms port in the repo... Can't remember if it's just in extras or some other one. Anyway, I'm off to try it.. Update: You will need to compile.. :(

For the closest thing to an alarm clock with music wakeup, I found flipclock to meet most needs. Cheers all!
at the summit on my n900, I setup multiple standard alarms easily.
it would be nice to allow the alarm program to run XYZ app, so things like internet radio or any other wakeup thing can be run.
more like Windows scheduled tasks in that regard.
I would personally not want to rely on internet radio to wake me up though - if you lose connectivity you are screwed and won't wakeup.

why do you need newest version of citrus?
if it was freeware, the version you had will still be freeware?
