The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme.

No music, no editor, no server component. You need a lot free space (> 32 MB). Install libsdl_net, wesnoth main package, official campaign (Heir to the Throne, The South Guard, The Rise of Wesnoth, A Tale of Two Brothers, Eastern Invasion or Under the Burning Suns), perhaps locales (for non-english speaking people) and sound.

Game starting very, very slow (loading graphics), so be patient. Have fun.

Yes, i tried catalan language, there is no inmediate change, and when rebooting the game, the language remains english, altough catalan is selected on language menu.
I?l try other locales to see if it happns too.

OK, I know. You need proper locale on N800. Changing language work only if you have these same locale installed on maemo. This is maemo/linux/locales characteristic, not wesnoth or my port, sorry.

I installed the sdl_net, game itself, finnish locale and all the campaings. Game starts fine, but whenever i try to start a game (tutorial, multiplayer, campaign), the game freezes. Cursor moves, but the game doesn't do anything. Have to killall -9 wesnoth.bin from the terminal to kill it. I'm using N800 with 1.2.8 SDL installed. What am I missing?

Update: Now it loaded fine. Yesterday I left it running for like 30 minutes and it didn't. Oh well, must test the game now.

BfW has a lot of grahics, so loading is slow. I can decrese size (compile with tinygui option), but then game is too small for N800 screen. I decided to leave it and change only themes (for better fit to 800x480).

will there be newer versions which solves the issue about the music?

and there's also an important thing i find, there is no taskbar icon, so when changing to another app or the desktop, the task disappears, i wonder if this could be solved somehow.

even if not, i am grateful so now i can play wesnoth on n800

Yes (I hope). I develop my own version of sdl_mixer with ogg support or I'll convert all ogg files to mp3.

Either I'm doing something stupid, or theres a bug. I've recently installed it along with a few campaigns, but as soon as I try and run one after picking a easy/hard setting it just locks up, I've not yet been able to get in the game. Any ideas?

Nevermind, I found it. I thought it was in games but I found it here, just in case someone also wants to edit the files.

I use leafpad to edit because notes app sucks.

It wasn't that bad. Took about 5-8 minutes to download the main package.

Hmm...must be bad routing day on my end somewhere (damn you Comcast!).
I eventually got it by downloading it to my Mac (took an hour) and then installing it.
But still, this is pretty quality and I wish someone on the Nokia side would get it brought into one of the "extras" repositories.

just in case anyone needs to reflash their n800 for whatever reason but doesn't want to lose their save games it's located in the .wesnoth directory in the the home directory.

I was having app mgr issues and needed to reflash and hated to lose my place 1/2 way through the "heir to the throne" campaign. Midnight commander to the rescue!! i just copied to my mem card, reflashed and replaced the entire directory, yay!

yeh I tried that in prefs, and it didn't seem to work. I'll give it a try again with the v1.2.6.

oh btw, for the people playing "heir to the throne" campaign, there is a scenerio that may feel like it has locked up but it hasn't. I believe it is "21_home_north_elves" scenerio that the cpu and memory pegs. It will take up to 1/2 hour for the enemy to move. Yes, 1/2 hour. Hehe and it stays that way for 5-7 turns. So basically, make your move, click end turn, and then go make a sandwich and eat it, watch some tv, etc. But it's totally worth it! The best battle is yet to come.

ok, upgraded everything to v1.2.6 and now customizing the keybindings work, well except for the escape key.

oh, a tip for anyone who is trying to customize their buttons, be careful what you do. You only have 5 buttons to work with. If you accidentally assign a key to a function you didn't want, you will have to manually go into the prefs file in /.wesnoth (I just use midnight commander, it's just easier than the whole command line business) to edit it.

The problem should be fairly obvious ... if you try to play Wesnoth with the pointer in your left hand! With the buttons all at the left side of the screen (or the top of the N800's case), to right-click using any of the hardware buttons you have to block your view of the screen by reaching across it with your right hand.

So I'd suggest three alternatives. (1) Register a triple-click as a right-click, (2) a button-push then a left click, i.e. a 'sticky' button, or (3) invert the screen -- which would put all the buttons at the right-hand side, opposite the pointer-holding hand.

(Of these, I don't know which -- if any -- are feasible, but I think #1 is probably preferable insofar as it may be useful for all players, not just left-handers. And of course, Nokia will probably make this whole question academic by releasing mouse support on OS2008 tomorrow ...)

Wesnoth works perfectly on OS2008. All you need to do is to download the game packages and install them with dpkg. OS2008 version of libsdl-net is available from one of the repos available at http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php?lang=en&system=maemo4&sort=hits&show_pck=125

Right click emulation doesn't work!
I'm using version 1:1.2.8-2osso1 on n800 with os2008.
I read it is done by cllicking while holding fullscreen button.
The button togles full screen but not right click.
Is it changed, removed or I'm imagining that it was possiblle in the first place?
That's briliant game (port) - 1st non puzzle game I really enjoy on this tablet

it seems that right click should reveal some intereting/usefull features, which I can't locate in the menu.

I'm trying to play, using the igo ultraslim BT keyboard. Is there SOME key on that keyboard that you can treat as a right click???

(Frankly, I think the N800 should have some general solution for right clicks for all programs, like an extra hard key to toggle the stylus.)

I'm going to answer my own question, and make a suggestion:
On the N800, you can't right-click in this game. But there is a button at the left top (next to menu) called "actions". That button may bring up your right-click choices, so now you can play the game.

NOW: In Westnoth, the menu hard BUTTON does nothing, so: please, person who ported Westnoth to the N800: make the menu button do something useful, like "undo" or "rightclick".

I'm afraid you'll have to use an external (USB/Bluetooth) keyboard. There's a couple of good threads on getting these running on the tablets :)

works GREAT! On IT770-os2006!
The trick is simple- copy system on mmc, flash 48MHz kernel and do not forget to make at least 128Mb swap PARTITION(Not a file!)
Loading time is still long enought, but game runs really smooth.

I have been having trouble with wesnoth causing my n810 to reboot. goes back to the Nokia Boot Screen.

Where do I post to provided the developers with more information to find the cause of the bug. Anyone else having this trouble?

I have a Nokia n810 running Diablo. I have cloned the OS onto the internal SD card and run most of my programs off the card. I have tried Battle for Wesnoth several times, but I have one problem: There is no text visible for any of the buttons, so I would have to run the program without any sort of text to guide me.
I have tried changing NIT themes, but that doesn't help bring out the text. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make text visible for Wesnoth on my n810? Thanks!
