View Full Version : Quick-switch widget - easily jump around your 4 desktops!
A widget that allows you to quickly jump to any of your 4 desktops.

Or a more dull variant:

Besides allowing the user to quickly jump to any of the four desktops maybe a hack could be added to ease the process of adding even more desktops for those who wish it.

This I think is a great idea. Would need to be multiple instance capable f course so we could have one on each desktop.

Should be easy to implement with modified-hildon-desktop and some existing widget for executing commands. The command to switch desktop view is:
gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/current -t int 5
(where 5 can be replaced by any view number).

It's a good idea. I have noticed that max desktops for me is 3 because after that's it's just faster to use main menu, but this could change that.
Best of all would be if the widget would be rather big and you could use pictures for the buttons that change the desktop. Example picture of the desktop or album to show that the desktop is about music.
Even better could be if the widget would take picture of the desktop last time you visited it. Like browsers bookmark thumbnails in browser, but i'm not sure if it would work in real life.

Like the idea :D Could the widget be locked so it doesn't move with he desktops underneath, so it always stays in one place. Yes it might lay over some other shortcut or widget, but if you're gonna have it on each desktop anyway that should easiely be solved by the the 'free space' of the widget that should have been there ;)
This was also an idea, so we don't waste desktop space. But having this in the "bar" might act nasty if not properly implemented with portrait mode apps like opera or the phone.
So could this be done in a limited way for the desktop only?

Thought of that to, but wouldn't it interfere with dropdown settings for the widgets and shortcuts?
Looks cool though ;)
Really is a breath of fresh air on this forum :D

No, it's supposed to be in the same bar with the clock and operator name.
The problem is what would happen to the widget in portrait mode; it should dissappear but I donmt know how this is possible.
Anyway I don't think it's possible to add a widget there...

Actually, making sure you've backed up the original, replace /usr/lib/hildon-desktop/connui-cellular-operator-home-item.so with another library found in the same folder and restart hildon-home...
This is what Custom Operator Name Widget does (and, incidentally, which I need to stop being a **** and release an update for)

What about having it as very small tabs at the bottom of the page? That would be cool, though they have to be tiny to be useful without becoming a hassle.

@Bec i see what you meen now ;)
Looks like qwerty12 came up with an answer on how to.

Ah yes, the good old Desktop Command Execution Widget... problem solved, nothing left to do :-)
But for the eye-candy we would really need that long-promised new version that allows bitmaps instead of text as button captions...

Doesn't queen-beecon allow that?

Yes, I'm looking forward to using this with Matan's nine desktops! Named desktops might also be nice. I would be happy with the switcher just on view 1, and maybe on each other view a widget that brings me back to 1.
