[Release] Black Plastic Theme (version 1.x) - the old thread

Hello everybody.

Version 1.3 is available @ extras -repository.

However, I've uploaded the version 1.6-6 to extras-testing. This version includes a bunch of new icons here and there, custom transitions and some other minor tweaks. See screenshots below:

After installing and selecting this theme to use (or upgrading the old one) it's absolutely important to do a reboot to make all changes visible!

Best theme for th N900 so far! Only one little change. I would prefer having no background for the close icon (or any icon in the top right). Or otherwise have these icons centered on the backgound. I hope you get what I mean.

Was thinking about this too. Now it's bit too close to an-DOID theme since same kind of box is used in the background of close -icon. I'll remove those in next release.

Just noticed that I need to fix web browsers loading indicator. It's hardly visible at the moment :D

Another little thing I noticed. Highlights are blue but notification banners are kind of amber in colour. I think they should use the same colour.

All highlights are light gray. Blue is only used as active text colour. I like to keep notifications as they are in original themes (yellow / orange).

Anyway, version 1.3 is now available @ extras-devel which includes several visibility fixes. After upgarding you have to re-select the theme and MUST do a reboot for all changes to be visible.

No, they are also light gray. Don't know about 3rd party widgets. They might be using the active font colour for highlight, but inbuild ones are light gray highlighted.

UPDATE: this is awesome! i love the effect that the bars are almost invisible to the eye. if possible and if no one cares of flooding the repos, make a plastic theme series :D

This is 1.2 ... As you can see the Applets are so cool but in 1.3 they are just a single grey colour.. Sorry no Screenshot from 1.3 cos i removed it straight away and found 1.2....

You can safely upgrade to 1.3 coz I haven't changed those. It's just that Maemo switches you partly back to Nseries theme during upgrade so you need to go and re-select Plastic theme to use after upgrading.

That is true! and that's what I did. It stayed the same after 3 reboots? ,that's why I went back to 1.2.

Maybe I will upgrade later this week but I'm messing around with some new icons ... Thanks again for this great Theme. :D

Broke everything? Mine is workig fine (the extras devel one). I removed custom icons for testing purposes and added custom transitions to theme. I'll play with it more tomorrow and see what I shall do with custom icons (just wanted to try how is the theme looking with stock icoms).

Ahh ok. I had to reboot several times but the theme is working again. The first few times during transitions weird things were happening, such as only half the screen refreshing etc.

I much prefer the custom icons I must say.

sudo gainroot
rm /usr/share/icons/black-plastic-icons/scalable/hildon/statusarea_battery*

And then reboot the phone :)

What I mean is, I have some cool battery icons that go well with certain themes and not with others. If I copy them individually in scalable folder of the respective theme would that work everytime I switch to that theme? If yes, how about the 48x48 ones? Does each theme have their own respective 48x48 and scalable folders? Sorry for the barage of questions and thanks in advance for the tips/advice.

You need to do more than just create folders:
- first create a folder under /usr/share/icons
- create a "index.theme" file inside that directory. Here's example of what my index.theme looks like:

You must include there all folders and icon types you are gonna include in your custom iconset.

- create directories you just filled in your index.theme -file and place your custom icons into those folders

Finally you need to edit your theme's gtkrc -file (located at /usr/share/themes/YOUR THEME DIRECTORY/gtk) to use your custom icon set you just created. Here's example of black-plastic's gtkrc-file (just the beginning), note the last line:

After editing that you need to remove the gtkr-cache -file under the same directory and then reboot the phone to make changes visible.

You can name your iconset into whatever you want and use it with any other themes aswell by just editing the gtkr-file.

Iconsets are actually kind like Themes; you can create as many as you want and then just edit one file of theme and make it use icon-theme you want, and you don't need to overwrite the original images ;)

Please share your icon-themes if you find the time to create some :)

Thanks for all the help D. I know you want to pay respect to the original artist when it comes to the stock icons. I have no complaints about the stock one, but IMHO there are just soo many other cool ones out there and that's why I use them. I have backed up all my original ones and have overwritten the ones that I found "slicker" than them. Either way though, I am a happy camper and pleased with both original and modified ones. I also have overwritten the transition.ini file to get that snappier feel all around. Kudos to you and the way you have evolved your theme developing.

Correct path for Black Plastic transitions.ini is:
/usr/share/themes/blackplastictheme-themedir/

Are you running on PR1.2? This theme is created for it and with PR1.2 the whole themes-directory is moved under /opt so all themes are optified by default.

If you're running PR1.1x then the devel version is not optified for you.

It's correct but really that folder is located under /opt and /usr/share/themes is just a symlink, so it's not taking any of your rootfs. You can verify this by checking your rootfs amount, then uninstall the theme and check again ;-)

Though in version 1.6-3 the signal bar for the operator looked like wireless bar instead of bars verticaly and the battery capacity was white. Now, this update 1.6-4 the battery color is blue and the signal is back to the default. Is there a way to get these back with out downgrading to the older version? thx

That was just testing on different icons and I didn't like those in practise. (I have to test my modifications through extras-devel at the moment because I'm far away from my computer and I'm doing all mods now by my N900).

I think I already deleted those :-/

That's same button as "reject call" is, so making that blue would also make your reject call -buttons to be blue. So not a good idea :) Besides it's only red when you have "keep display on" option selected.

i was gonna report a bug about receiving sms, im thinking what will an unread sms look like. then a colleague sent me one sms, i saw the small black envelope with a white star (so cool!) means unread, a blue arrow means you replied, the hourglass means sending (awesome) and a plain one means read.......awesomeal thanks! my n900 rocks! :D

- new icons for SMS & chat messages, credit for these goes straightly to D4rKlar (allthough I did edit 'em just a bit), awesome job dude!
- new icons for several misc places (default avatar, blue phone icon etc.)
- new transitions effects, credit for these goes straightly to MohammadAG (minor tweaking done by me here)
- minor graphical bug @ dialog window fixed now
- overal brightness & contrast adjusted for a bit better visibility
- different icons for application manager (more like the stock ones for not messing people heads up)

thx guys for the feedback . I removed the shadows underneeth the icons you know applying "mv application short.... blah blah blah .png.old" and restarted and it was fixed . I don't know which one fixed but I'm enjoying my cool looking N900 .

i was gonna report a bug about receiving sms, im thinking what will an unread sms look like. then a colleague sent me one sms, i saw the small black envelope with a white star (so cool!) means unread, a blue arrow means you replied, the hourglass means sending (awesome) and a plain one means read.......awesomeal thanks! my n900 rocks! :D

Yeah I tried Mohammad's a while back and they kick some serious ***. I have been using this one lately too on dark themes as I have Blur=0. Pretty cool also.

First of all many thanks for your great theme! I just updated to 1.6.6 and in my humble opinion the old blue battery and the signal looked better. The new menu just rocks but i think it would look more natural if the lightening difference (top-bottom) wasn't so great. Thanks again for your great theme.

Can you please turn the small telefone button on the right by the recent dialed numbers to the original (darker blue)? The new that is lighter blue it has exactly the same color as the skype icon and the skype avatars and it really messes up the clarity on the list. You can't tell apart on first sight what was skype and what was a normal cellular call!!!

You have a point there. But I'm not turning it to it's original hue since it makes phone call list look ugly. Instead I might try to turn it to dark gray / black.

I've designed this theme to be readable on every area with images included in it. I don't want to add the blur to application menu because for some bizarre reason the list scrolls much smoother without it.

It indeed makes the menu pretty unreadable when using light background on homescreen. I can post instructions on how to manually get the blur back if you want to?

Despite the fact that the themes makes the UI smoother they affec the ability of tweakr of snaping to grid. I made alot of testing with those versions, alot of restarts and I was never able to snap to grid the desktop icons with those two versions installed.
I could not reproduce with 1.3 version!
Please test and correct this. I will not give yet a negative vote because the theme is great but the bug it is realy anoying!

Sounds like tweaker only writes changes of snap to grid value to the system's transitions.ini instead of what current theme's transitions.ini is telling to use. So it's more like "bug" in tweaker instead of my theme.

I have used the default value (4) in my transitions.ini. You can manually change that value by editing this file:
/usr/share/themes/blackplastictheme-themedir/transitions.ini

As far as I see it would not be fair to thumb down my theme since it's not breaking any rules etc. It's only tweaker that is incabable of editing the correct transitions.ini -file.

Because it didn't have custom transitions included. I will try one trick and see if it helps.

Maybe to install transition.ini in another place /usr/share/hildon-desktop. I don't know if this will help. Maybe tweaks is managing only the transition.ini files situated in a precise location.

Well... wasn't that just what I said earlier; tweaker is only capable of editing transitions.ini located @ /usr/share/hildon-desktop.

Anyways, I found a workaround and I'll upload new version soon (I just leave out the snap-to-grid stuff from my custom transitions.ini and Hildon will use value given in that "system wide" transitions.ini).

Yep, I did some modifications to transition (added small amount of blur to applauncher so light backgrounds are now also working, shortened some transition times and so on...). Feel free to copy. use and share the files as you wish :)

Great indeed! Unfortunatelty your little trick with snap to grid wasn't able to resolve the tweakr problems. I think the only solution is to copy the transitions to hildon-desktop.

Well.. tweakr has nothing to do with your snapping. Snap to grid -function has been enabled in Hildon by default since PR1.11. It was previously set to 4 pixels and now that you changed it to 16 pixels it's more visible and noticable (is that right word?). System default is 4 pixels and I'm not changing that since it might mess people desktops up.

All I'm saying that you can safely delete the tweakr since you will have now snap to grid @ 16 pixels anyway because you just edited the value there manually and that's what I suggested you to do in my first reply to your problem ;)

Edit: to be more precice: tweakr just changes that value depending what setting you choose from it's configuration.

Wih value 4 you HAVE the snap to grid function, it will just snap to smaller area. Four is the default value and that's what I'm going to use in my custom transitions.ini -file. User must edit the file manually if he wants to have bigger grid and now you have successfully done that. I can't believe it took like five replys to achieve that when I told you to do so in my very first reply :D

But anyways, seems like everybody are happy now so I'm gonna fire up my grill and start cooking some dinner :)

It's called wmBanner.png (also wmBannerPortrait.png) if that helps, on your phone it'll be in usr/share/themes/YOUR THEME/images

Oh no! I refuse to create any white / light theme until Nokia has fixed it's own apps to use themes correctly :D It's kind of waste of time to create nice theme but then loosing functionality of severall in-built apps.

awesome! my s60 with a vista black theme is a goof match with this theme when it comes with the file folders....:D

btw....the transition on this one is awesome! men i copied it to hildon-desktop so i have the same effect if i change theme. i also notice the change in managing shortcuts/wdigets. it more detailed now, unlike on the old one, its too snappy, the arrangement of the shortcuts/widgets is either too far or too near. now i can decide how far or how close too each other the shortcuts are. :D

Okay folks! Just uploaded version 1.6-10 to extras-devel (should be downloadable in next 20 mins). This one includes very minor changes to theme itself (darkened the down arrow @ recent phone call list and changed all green phone icons to silver), but more important;

- this one asks during the installation if you would like to install custom transitions or not.

Okay folks! Just uploaded version 1.6-10 to extras-devel (should be downloadable in next 20 mins). This one includes very minor changes to theme itself (darkened the down arrow @ recent phone call list and changed all green phone icons to silver), but more important;

- this one asks during the installation if you would like to install custom transitions or not.

Yep, tapping outside the box = cancell / no
As far as I know it cannot be easily changed since that's the way it works in Hildon :-/

I will add a note about this to the pop-up window when I'm pushing the next update out.

Edit: and in case if someone accidently tapped outside the box, here's the code (type in xterm) to bring in the customized transitions (rootsh must be installed):
sudo gainroot

That's quite easy. Type these into xterm (copy paste). Rootsh must be installed:
sudo gainroot
cd /usr/share/icons/black-plastic-icons
find . -type f -name \*general_received\* -print | xargs rm -f
find . -type f -name \*gneral_sent\* -print | xargs rm -f

And then reboot the phone :)

Black Plastic does include quite many custom icons (check conversations, file manager, call log etc), you just need to reboot your phone after selecting this theme to use.

If you mean application icons then the answer is no; I think the original designer already decided what icon reflects best to the application. I also find it very confusing if icon for application varies along the themes, it's difficult to find the application you're looking to launch.

Yes I saw those icons. And I understand what you mean about original designer icons. But I think you a litttle bit missunderstood me - I meant nokia default icons like sms phone e-mail appmanager and so on. I suggest you install the theme I linked to in the previous menu and play with it.

would be awesome if i could select the color variant at installation... even better if one could select the variant while 'applying' the theme after installation. as in, only one package is installed but one can choose any color variant at the time of application. should be possible to choose different color variants at different times.

only thing about that, what if i like it in black, blue and orange. id only be able to select one colour on installation, then it would dissapear from app manager so i couldnt go and install another colour version.

Well, that's why I would write a setup "program" for Black Plastic which would be launchable like every other program installed to phone. So you could run the setup when ever you want and choose what variation to use.

Sounds like you're doing it wrong. After upgrading you need FIRST to go and re-select the Black Plastic to use (Hildon reverts back to Nseries when upgrading theme that's currently in use) in normal way (you know, tap the homescreen -> tap the gear icon -> choose theme etc). And after that do the reboot :)

Same thing applies to Nokia's preinstalled apps. I see red when I'm using theme that has different icons for any application in application launcher menu. It's just confusing.

Sorry, but this is just a matter of taste and I'm too lazy to design bunch of icons just because someone else wants to have those :-D I'm only creating something I like personally :-P

Uploaded a new version to extras-devel. I manged to shrink down the deb-file by few megabytes and also changed the setup script a bit.

And now the setup script can be launched a bit easier if you want to change your color scheme. Jus type these into terminal:

sudo gainroot
./setupblackplastic.sh

Edit: I still haven't figured out a way to launch that setup script via shortcut. The shortcut is not a problem, problem is that the script needs to be ran with root priviledges :-/

Finally! Uploading version 1.6-14 to devel at the moment. This one has now shortcut icon to run the setup script any time (BIG thanks to MohammedAG again!). Remeber that after you have ran the setup you need to go and re-select the Black Plastic theme to use and then do a reboot.

This version should be available @ extras-devel in next 30 mins.

After you have installed the theme and you want to run the setup wizard again, you go to your applications menu:

I noticed that there's a small error on script: if you choose not to use the transitions on first time you install the theme it will cause file not found -error. Will fix that later today when I have managed to put the kids to bed :)

Hmmm.. something has gone wrong with sudoers. Can you try to uninstall the theme from appmanager and then re-install it and see if it makes any difference?

Could you also paste the output of this in xterm:
cd /home/user
ls

Uploaded (again) new version to devel. Only change is that now the terminal window is not shown to user when he launches the setup from the shortcut :)

It's correct but really that folder is located under /opt and /usr/share/themes is just a symlink, so it's not taking any of your rootfs. You can verify this by checking your rootfs amount, then uninstall the theme and check again ;-)
